- Tricks of the Game Programming Gurus
- 1995 Sams Publishing
-
-
- 1. Using the CD
-
- Most of the editors and utilities and some of the level files
- included on this disc must be copied to your hard drive to
- function properly. Refer to the respective rooms in the book
- and the documentation files accompanying the programs on this
- CD for detailed instructions. To make playing the WADs from
- the CD easier, the WAD files for each game appear in
- \WADS\DOOM1\PLAY, \WADS\DOOM2\PLAY, and \HERETIC\PLAY. Use
- these CD directories as the locations of WAD files in front-end
- DOOM loading tools like DOOM-IT included on the disc. The ..\PLAY
- subdirectories include only those WADs that can be played from
- the CD without altering your main WAD file or running utilities
- to insert sound and graphics. To start the menu program which
- installs DOOM-IT and other software to your hard drive, type
- \DOOMCD from your CD-ROM drive prompt. Also, if a converted
- WAD does not exist for your game version, try the conversion
- programs located in \BONUS\UTILS to convert them yourself.
-
-
- 2. How the CD is Organized
-
- Level editors and general utilities which are discussed in
- the book can be found in the directories \EDITORS and \UTILS.
- All other editors, tools, and utilities are located in \BONUS.
- Tutorial levels discussed in the book are located in \SAMPLE.
- Example levels created by various designers are located in the
- \WADS directory. The example levels are separated into three
- main categories-- DOOM levels are in \WADS\DOOM1, the DOOM II
- levels are in \WADS\DOOM2, and Heretic levels are in \WADS\HERETIC.
- WADs designed for more than one game version will, in most cases, be
- included in all appropriate directories.
-
- For instance, levels that work for DOOM and DOOMII appear in
- both directories, and levels that work for Deathmatch and Single
- play appear in both directories.
-
-
- 3. Installing Windows Applications from the CD
-
- * (Windows programs include DOOMCAD, WINDEU, and WINTEX.) *
-
- To install the Windows applications from the CD-ROM, do the
- following:
-
- 1. Start Windows.
-
- 2. Select File from the Program Manager menu.
-
- 3. Select Run from the File menu.
-
- 4. Type x:\SETUP, where x is the letter of your
- CD-ROM drive.
-
- 5. Follow the instructions provided by the setup
- program.
-
- The program will create a Program Manager group named "Doom
- Utilities", which contains icons for running the windows
- programs, viewing their help applications, and viewing the
- documentation provided by the software's authors.
