  4. (This is mostly a duplicate of HELP.TXT included since some ftp sites
  5. require a readme.txt file to be enclosed.)

  7. Most of the help is avaiable within the program
  8. by clicking HELP.
  9.  
  10. InternetNotePad! The first of its kind! A notepad program that actually
  11. reads/writes documents on the Internet. InternetNotepad! is just like
  12. the notepad program issued with Windows, but allows you to work over
  13. the Internet.
  14.  
  15. Great for : frequent updates of web pages - no more edit, upload, edit
  16.             upload some more... just edit and save! So easy!
  17.  
  18.             writing programming source code

  20.             creating quick internet batch files, asp, perl
  21.  
  22.             replacing unix commands like Pico, VI, Emacs
  23.             .. much more!

  26. -Note- In The Unregistered Version :
  27. ------
  28. The trial period for Unregistered InternetNotePad! is 20-days.
  29. You will be posted warnings on day 10 and 20. After 20 days,
  30. the program will not save files until you register.

  32. The registration amount is a very modest ($18) compared to the power
  33. of this program. Please click REGISTER on the main menu in the
  34. program for details.

  37. ------------------ HELP ON SETTINGS -------------------------
  38. =============================================================
  39. If you have trouble with the settings of the program
  40. a short description of SETTINGS follows:
  41.  
  42. In the SITE field, enter a full site name
  43. such as : eagle.geocities.com
  44.       somewhere.someplace.com
  45.       123.456.789
  46.       etc.
  47.  
  48. In the USER and PASSWORD fields, enter your username
  49. and password such as :
  50.       harry123
  51.       ******
  52.       etc.
  53. This should be fairly self explanatory.

  56. Note : AOL USERS - Enter the following for your settings - AOL USERS
  57. Site Name : members.aol.com
  58. User Name : anonymous
  59. Password  : your_user_name@aol.com
  60. Remote Dir: your_user_name

  63. Clicking on SAVE PASSWORD IN PREFERENCES indicates whether you
  64. want the password _also_ remembered in the preference file (along
  65. with the other fields you entered). This is so that each time you
  66. run the program, the fields are remembered and filled in for you.
  67. Some people wouldn't want the password stored in a file for security
  68. reasons.
  69. However, InternetNotePad! includes password encryption in the data file
  70. so that you can not view the password.

  72. Once you're satisfied with the entry, click OK to save it.

  75. - SAVES MULTIPLE FTP SITES IN PREFERENCES -

  78. You can enter multiple sites by simply entering a new site name,
  79. user information, password and click OK.

  81. -- Selecting the Entries --
  82. To select the different sites, you can click on the pull-down
  83. button next to the SITE name field and it will list all the ftp sites
  84. you have entered.
  85. Once you select a site, the username, password, and other fields
  86. will fill in automatically to what you had them at before for that
  87. site. Any further changes you make will be saved once you hit OK in
  88. the settings.

  90. -- Adding a New Entry --
  91. If the site name field currently has something entered already (such as
  92. a previously selected ftp site) just begin typing over it and enter
  93. all the new information and then click OK. This will enter a new site into
  94. the preferences file as long as the site name is a new one.

  96. Likewise, to change any fields on an already existing entry, just select the
  97. entry from the pulldown, modify the fields such as the password, username, or
  98. directory, and then click OK. This will update the entry.

  100. -- Removing an Entry --
  101. Currently there is no Delete button for the ftp sites under the
  102. settings screen. Therefore, if you do want to erase some ftp sites,
  103. or just make a whole new list of sites, you'll have to delete the
  104. file called "notepadpref.dat" (a file created by the program). This 
  105. will force the program to create a new one for you. Maybe the next 
  106. version I'll add a delete key for it.

  108. I hope the controls for the Settings screen are easy to understand.
  109. If they are not, please LET ME KNOW and I'll change them so they _are_
  110. easy for all users to use.

  114. - Other Notes -
  115. ===============================================================
  116. Special Web Host Condition :
  117.  
  118. InternetNotePad! requires your FTP server to allow you the 
  119. ability to both UPLOAD and DOWNLOAD files. Some ftp/web hosts only
  120. allow you to upload files to their site. You must also be allowed the
  121. ability to download from the site to use InternetNotePad!. If you
  122. do find you have this problem, please send me an email and I will
  123. see what I can do for you.

  125. Opening Local Files :
  126.  
  127. InternetNotePad! does not support opening local files on your computer.
  128. It only supports opening, editing, and saving REMOTE files on the
  129. Internet. Future versions may include the ability to open and store
  130. remotely local files on your computer, but this was left out of the
  131. original version for transparency and simpilicty of the program idea.
  132. For now, if you absolutely must open a local file to save on the internet,
  133. you can drag & drop the file locally onto the InteretNotePad! icon
  134. and then save it on the internet.

  137. - Y2K Compliancy : InternetNotePad! IS YEAR 2000 COMPLIANT (Y2K) -

  139. InternetNotePad! has been updated to include a new Year 2000 and up
  140. data interface. If all goes well, the program should last well
  141. into the year 9999, then again, I suppose we'll all have evolved
  142. into something much wackier by then. :)
