  4. Thank you for choosing Globalink's German Assistant for
  5. Windows.  We are proud of this product, and are confident
  6. that it will help you communicate in German.

  8. Please remember that proper accents are critical for a good
  9. translation.  If you have questions about accents, please
  10. refer to Chapter 9 of the User's Guide.
  11.  
  12. Chapter 11 of the User's Guide also includes Common
  13. Questions that you may wish to read before calling technical
  14. support.

  16. Translating documents is now very easy.  And since word
  17. processing formats are preserved during translation, the
  18. translation may look like a perfect document.  Please note,
  19. however, that while the software generally produces an
  20. understandable translation, it rarely produces a perfect
  21. translation.  Try using the sample files included with the
  22. program to get an idea of the translation quality that can
  23. be achieved.  For translations that must be of publication
  24. quality, always consult a professional translator or native
  25. speaker.

  28. ADVANCED OPTIONS

  31. USE WITH MICROSOFT WORD 6.0 FOR WINDOWS
  32.  
  33. You can now translate documents directly within Word 6.0 for
  34. Windows.  Please see the sheet "Information for Microsoft
  35. Word Version 6.0 Users" included with your User's Guide for
  36. a description and installation instructions.
  37.  
  38. Please note that the Translate Document feature behaves
  39. differently in when activated from Word for Windows 6.0.
  40. When activated from Word for Windows 6.0, Translate Document
  41. will translate FROM the current cursor position to the end
  42. of the document.  It WILL NOT translate from the top of the
  43. document.  Note also that Translate Document will attempt to
  44. re-translate any sentences that were previously translated
  45. if the cursor is above those sentences in the text.

  47. The Word Scan feature CANNOT be accessed from Word for
  48. Windows 6.0.  To scan for unknown words in a document, copy
  49. the text to the clipboard.  Then start German Assistant and
  50. select File, then New Project.  Select the correct language
  51. direction.  When presented with the empty project window,
  52. press CTRL-V to paste the text into the project window.  You
  53. can now use the Word Scan feature in German Assistant.  As
  54. an alternative to copying the text, you can import the
  55. document as described below.

  57. If you have several products from the Language Assistant
  58. Series, version 1.0e, ONLY ONE of the products will be
  59. available from the Word for Windows 6.0 menu.  HOWEVER, if
  60. you install all of the version 1.0e products into the SAME
  61. DIRECTORY, all products will be accessible from Word for
  62. Windows 6.0.  WARNING: If you are installing multiple
  63. Language Assistants into the same directory, they must all
  64. be the SAME VERSION. The version can be obtained by
  65. executing the installed program, then selecting Help, then
  66. About.

  68. If you prefer to IMPORT your Word for Windows 6.0 documents
  69. into German Assistant, the file must be saved in the Word
  70. for Windows 2.0 format.  To do so open the document in Word
  71. for Windows 6.0, then select File then Save As.  In the File
  72. Type box, select Word for Windows 2.0.  In the File Name
  73. box, type a NEW name for the file.  This file can then be
  74. imported into German Assistant as described in the manual.

  77. IMPORTING A FILE FROM THE COMMAND LINE
  78.  
  79. German Assistant 1.0e can use a command line option to
  80. import a file for translation.  Therefore, you can start
  81. German Assistant by going to File Manager or Program Manager
  82. and selecting File, Run, then type in the command line box
  83. SPANASST /I <pathname> <direction>.  Substitute the complete
  84. path and file name for <pathname> and the abbreviation of
  85. the translation direction for <direction>, such as EG for
  86. English to German or GE for German to English.

  88. For example, if you wanted to import the file README.TXT
  89. included with German Assistant, you would type the following
  90. command:

  92.     C:\GERMWIN\GERMASST.EXE /I C:\GERMWIN\README.TXT EG

  94. This option allows you to start German Assistant from other
  95. Windows programs that allow you to define a "viewer" for
  96. text files.  In such a case you might set the viewer command
  97. line to GERMASST /I %1 EG.  The calling program should
  98. provide the path and file name which will automatically be
  99. inserted in place of %1.

  102. UPGRADING FROM SPANISH ASSISTANT 4.X
  103.  
  104. You can transfer the auxiliary dictionaries from German
  105. Assistant 4.06 and 4.1 to German Assistant for Windows 1.0e
  106. by using the Dictionary Converter program.  An icon for this
  107. program is placed in the Language Assistant Series group
  108. during installation.

  111. DICTIONARY CONVERTER
  112.  
  113. The Dictionary Converter is used only to upgrade version
  114. 4.06 and 4.1 auxiliary dictionaries for use in German
  115. Assistant version 1.0e.  If you do not have a previous
  116. version of German Assistant, you can remove the Dictionary
  117. Converter icon from the Language Assistant Series program
  118. group.

  121. MODIFYING TRANSLATED PROJECTS
  122.  
  123. Once a project has been translated, any changes made to the
  124. source will untranslate that portion of the document.  If
  125. you use either Paragraph or Character from the Format menu,
  126. you will lose the translations of the selected sentences.
  127. Reformatting the entire project will untranslate the entire
  128. project.  When following the Tutorial in Chapter 4 of the
  129. User's Guide, be aware that the section "Formatting Your
  130. Project" is not intended to be performed after translating a
  131. project.  If your project is inadvertently untranslated, you
  132. can retrieve the last saved version by opening the File menu
  133. and choosing Revert to Saved.
