  1. INTRODUCTION
  2.  
  3. X-File replaces the standard tiny OS/2 "open/save as" file dialogs with a full
  4. height dialog (user customizable) and adds many enhancements such as drive
  5. buttons, file and directory histories, launcher for file and directory
  6. viewers/managers, frequently used directories list, and file/dir operations such
  7. as copy, move, rename and delete. Requires OS/2 3.0 or later.

  9. UPDATE WARNING + UN-INSTALL
  10.  
  11.   If you currently have an earlier version of X-File running, you MUST follow
  12.   these steps before installing:
  13.  
  14.       1) Remove X-File from your startup folder or startup.cmd file.
  15.       2) Reboot - this is usually the only way to unload X-File's .dll file
  16.       3) You can now remove/backup the old X-File files. But keep XFILE.INI, or
  17.          copy it to the directory where you install this new version.
  18.       4) Proceed with the install

  20. INSTALLATION
  21.  
  22.   Files in this release:

  26.                 ORDER.FRM       - order forms (see online help for Canadian form)
  27.                 FILE_ID.DIZ     - id file for BBSs
  28.                 VENDOR.DOC      - vendor distribution license

  31.   Copy the first 3 files to any directory on a local drive. Insure this
  32.   directory is in the LIBPATH statement in CONFIG.SYS or that the current
  33.   directory is indicated (LIBPATH=.). It's a good idea to place a shadow of the
  34.   program in the startup folder. A reboot is required if you made changes to the
  35.   LIBPATH statement. X-File is now ready to run - simply load xfile.exe.

  37. USING X-FILE
  38.  
  39.   The first time the program is loaded, an Options dialog appears. The next time
  40.   it is loaded, it will either minimize or hide, depending on the startup
  41.   settings. You can now use the default settings, and simply press the Hide
  42.   button to use. Then when any open file dialog is selected - such as from the
  43.   OS/2 system editor - you will see an enhanced, larger dialog appear. Press the
  44.   drive buttons to switch drives. Click on a file in the file list, then press
  45.   the File Viewer button to view the file, using the default viewer that you
  46.   have configured for WPS objects. Click on a directory in the directory list,
  47.   then press the File Manager to open that directory using the default manager -
  48.   usually a WPS folder. You can press the right mouse button (or shift-F10) over
  49.   anywhere in the file dialog (except the file entry field) to show a popup
  50.   menu that gives similar options, as well as to show the X-File options screen.

  52.   To use the file operations in the popup menu, first hilight a file in the file
  53.   list, then press the right mouse button. Copy/moves are done in a background
  54.   thread, so you can close the open file dialog while a copy/move is in
  55.   progress (but don't close the application). For directory rename/delete, first
  56.   select a subdirectory in the directory list, then press the right mouse
  57.   button. Success of the operation is indicated in the status line just above
  58.   the file list.

  60.   With the X-File Options dialog visible, you can adjust the height of open file
  61.   dialog, set the file/directory history size (0-10), or configure your
  62.   favourite file viewer (such as list.exe or hv.exe) and/or file manager -
  63.   simply type in the name of the program to launch - path name is only required
  64.   if the program is not in the PATH statement in CONFIG.SYS.

  66.   X-File will remember the last position on the screen that the open file dialog
  67.   appeared. To try, press on the "Test open file dialog" button, move the dialog,
  68.   close it, then re-open.

  70.   Warning: If you set both 'Hide' and 'Remove from task list' options, you will
  71.   not be able to access the X-File window from the task list. If this happens,
  72.   press the right mouse button (sft-F10) over any open/save as file dialog, then
  73.   select 'Show X-File'. This option is also on the file dialog system menu. You
  74.   can also double click on the X-File program icon to display it (might need to
  75.   do this twice).

  79.   X-File is shareware and costs $15. The first time X-File is loaded, a
  80.   registration dialog is shown. For the remainder of the trial period, you can
  81.   use X-File fully - it is not crippled in any way. After the trial period, you
  82.   must register it if you decide to keep it. Check to online help for full
  83.   registration info.

  86.   X-File window, and double click on the registration hot link. Read the
