- ──[1]─ General Information ───────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- MGR is a file manager for iNSTiNCT. It has been designed in conjunction with
- iNSTiNCT 3.0 "Hanging Gardens", but has been tested with iNSTiNCT v1.2, and
- should therefore also be compatible with previous and later iNSTiNCT versions
- (at least up to 3.0). There have been some major changes since MGR 1.1, so
- read the what's new section if you've used MGR before. If you don't have the
- time/don't want to read through this entire document, online help is available
- in MGR at almost any time by pressing F1.

- MGR intro ANSi).

-
- ──[3]─ Conference List ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- The conference list is where (naturally) you choose the conference from
- which to pick files. Or, if you are transfering files, where to transfer
- them. MGR will automatically switch in and out of the conference list as
- needed when transfering files. Before you get all confused, when I write
- conferences I mean conferences OR areas. There is little difference between
- the two, except that areas are always "sub-conferences".
-
- One of the major news in MGR 1.2 is that any drive available on your system
- (save the floppies) can be accessed. Directories will be treated as
- conferences. iNSTiNCT will be treated as a virtual drive called "iTC". Files
- may be freely copied between any drives, of course including the iTC drive.
- Pressing F2 will allow you to choose a drive.
- If a conference has any subdirectories (called areas) there are no files
- in the conference (but there are in the subareas). In a directory structure,
- files and directories are mixed, and this reflects a major difference in the
- way keys are interpreted in the conference list. When browsing the iTC drive,
- entering an area is accomplished by pressing ENTER or arrowRIGHT. On another
- drive however there may be both subdirectories and files, and pressing ENTER
- will take you further into the directory tree. Pressing arrowRIGHT will bring
- you to the filelist. This can be visualised: If you press enter, you stay in
- the conference list, but pressing arrowRIGHT brings you to the filelist (to
- the right of the conference list).
- If you are confused after reading the above, go ahead and browse around.
- You will soon understand how it works, and it will hopefully make sense.
-
- There are some colors in the conference listing that ought to be mentioned.
- If an entry is blue, it is normal. A red entry on the other hand is
- defective, and the conference info will tell you what the problem was. If the
- problem was unidentified, an uncommon error occured. The only hint that can
- be given in such a case is to check the settings for that conference in
- iTCSETUP, although it is unlikely that a bad entry would produce an
- unidentifiable error. A gray conference listing is purely esthaetical, to
- help you keep track of whether you are in the filelist, or the conference
- list.
-
-
- ──[4]─ File List ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- In order to manage files, which, after all, is what MGR was designed for,
- you must be able to list files. That's where the filelist comes in. It allows
- you to copy/move/nuke/import/edit/search/etc. files. MGR operates primarily
- on tagged files. If there however are no files, MGR will operate on the file
- under the cursor. If tagged files are present, the position of the cursor
- does not affect anything (with the exception of DiZ editing).
-
- ■ Positioning the marker/cursor over a file and pressing SPACE will
- tag/untag depending on it's previous state.
- ■ Pressing '+' will allow you to tag files matching a certain criteria.
- ■ Pressing '-' will untag all files.
- ■ '*' will invert the tag. Tagged files will become untagged, and untagged
- will become tagged.
-
- Once you have tagged some files you can do an operation on them (if you
- only want to do the operation on one file, you naturally don't have to tag
- it). There are several operations that can be done, however they can be
- divided into a few groups.
-
- ■ File transfer (copy,move,nuke,import)
- Can be done to/from any conference, with certain exceptions (you can for
- natural reasons not copy to a CD, or remove files for that matter, so no
- move operations for instance are allowed to/from a CD).
-
- ■ Edit the filedata (edit filedata/edit DiZ)
- This is of course not possible if you are browsing on a disk, since there
- is no fileinfo that may be edited stored in an iTC listfile. There will
- be more on this topic later in this file.
-
- ■ Search
- Since the search engine only searches for data stored in iTC listfiles,
- you may not search for files, if you aren't searching on the "iTC drive".
-
- Certain operations require that you choose a target conference/dir, and MGR
- will automatically switch to the conference list.
-
- Once again there is a certain color scheme used by MGR. A blue file is
- normal, as with conferences. A red file is a file that was reported present
- in the listfile, but could not be found on your HD. Green files are tagged
- and purple color means that the file was detected by MGR, but was not found
- in the listfile. If we're dealing with a "drive" other than iTC, then files
- will always be marked as blue, despite the fact that they were not present
- in any listfile. There will be more info on importing files in the followin
- section.
-
- If you find a file marked as either blue (normal) or purple, then you may
- view it's contents. Depending on the extension, MGR will treat the file
- differently. There is currently support for ZIP,ARJ,RAR,LZH archive formats
- (see information on the arcviewer for more info on that), EXE and COM files
- will be ignored, and any other file will be opened as a textfile without ANSi
- support.
-
- If you are in "directory mode" then you can bring up the file_id.diz by
- standing on it for a sec. Then file_id.diz will be loaded and shown in the
- description window.
-
-
- ──[5]─ File Transfer ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- File transfer involves copy, move, nuke, import (although nuke or import don't
- really transfer anything).
-
- Nuke is quite straightforward and requires no further comments, but copy
- and move involve choosing a target conference (or directory). Simply put,
- you choose conference but entering it's filelist. See the section on
- conference list for more info about entering a filelist. Once again: If you
- are uncertain about the workings of this, go ahead and try it out. It's the
- most efficient way to learn.
-
- Import, however deserves a special mentioning. A file marked as purple
- may be imported into the filelist by pressing F7, with the cursor positioned
- on it (or you could tag several). If the file being imported is an archive,
- then MGR will attempt to extract FILE_ID.DIZ, and if found, it is entered as
- descrition. MGR will mark itself as a hidden uploader of the file, but this
- may of course be changed by editing the freshly imported files.
-
- WARNING: Make sure that the file is not being uploaded. It has happened more
- than once that a file was imported while being uploaded, producing very
- strange effects.
-
-
- ──[6]─ Edit FileData ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- Suppose you've just imported a file, and now you want to give it a proper
- description and change the name of the uploader to your name. There are
- basically two keypressed that you have to make. However, know that none of
- these changes will affect the file itself, only the data that iTC has about
- the file (ie. the changes will only be written to the listfile).
-
- ■ Changing Uploader (and other stuff as well)
- Tag the files you want to change. Now enter the data as you want it.
- The little dots to the left of the input fields turn into squares when
- you add text. A dot (·) means that the field to the right will not be
- duplicated. The square (■) on the other hand, means that the field will
- be duplicated on all tagged files when you press enter. You can toggle
- between the two states with TAB. Anyway, if you turn all dots on, and
- press enter, then all tagged files will have exactly the same Date,
- Uploader, Mark, and reported Size. Remember that the size (in kb)
- reported in the listfile has nothing to do with the file's physical size.
-
- ■ Changing the DiZ
- Pressing F9 will take you to the DiZ edit ANSi. There will be a preloaded
- DiZ determined by the cursors position when you pressed F9. Since MGR
- uses tagged files primarily (only when there are no tagged files, will
- MGR use the file under the cursor), you can "copy" a DiZ from one file to
- other file (or files, if you tagged several).
-
- The DiZ editor is very well documented online, so you should have no
- problems running it. There are however some features which are
- uncommented online.
-
- When you edit a line in the DiZ (by hitting ENTER), as soon as you start
- typing, you'll be baffeled since two identical lines will appear. Well,
- the upper one has ANSi interpretation turned on, and the lower turned
- off. Pressing F2 while editing will bring up a menu of colors, and
- choosing a color will insert it's ANSi code into the line at the current
- cursor position.
-
- F10 will duplicate the DiZ in the window on ALL tagged files. Any numbers
- will be fixed, so if you plan on editing an 80 disk release and keeping
- all disk numbers, then you can look forward to a lot of work. Sorry... ;)
-
-
- ──[7]─ Search ────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- This function is invoked by pressing F3. It can be called upon from both
- the filelist and the conflist. It is quite straightforward and doesn't need
- much documentation. It will search for all files matching the specified
- settings. If you leave any field blank, it will be completely ignored in the
- search. So, if you want to search for anything which has to do with iNSTiNCT
- then simply enter 'instinct' in the "DiZ KEYWORD" field, and leave the other
- blank. If you want to search for all Team iNSTiNCT releases then enter
- 'ti*.*' in the "FiLENAME" field (leaving the others blank, or possibly
- filling in 'instinct' in "DiZ KEYWORD". The search is not case sensitive.
-
-
- ──[8]─ Arc Viewer ────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- Viewing a file with extension ZIP,ARJ,LZH,RAR will activate the arcviewer.
- A list of files included in the archive will be shown on screen. From inside
- the arcviewer you can in turn view other archives or textfiles, or extract
- files to a directory of your choice (naturally created if non-existing).
-
- If you choose to extract files. MGR will prompt you for a directory. If
- the directory is invalid, MGR will create it for you. First of all, you have
- to be able to tag which files to extract. You do so by pressing SPACE or '+'.
- In the arcviewer, '+' will tag all files. Keys '-' and '*' will work the same
- way as they do in the filelist.
- After tagging the files you want, press F2. After choosing directory, MGR
- will ask you whether you want to overwrite any files already in the
- directory. If there are stored pathnames, MGR will ask you if you want to
- extract using full pathnames.
-
- Since it takes substantially more time to call at least ARJ with large
- archives, if you choose all files, MGR will extract all files in one go, thus
- no progress indicator will be shown. Otherwise a progress indicator will show
- the progress.
-

- ─[11]─ Parameters ────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- You can run MGR with parameters.
-
- ■ If you specify a filename, or part of a filename, MGR will open it as
- if you had browsed into that directory and pressed ENTER on the file.
- When you press ESC, you're back in DOS again. Perfect for dearchiving
- files with weird names.
- Ex. "MGR TI!ITC" opens the file matching TI!ITC* best.
-
- ■ "MGR ." starts MGR in directory mode, with the current directory
- loaded.
-
-
- ─[12]─ Closing Words ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- Although MGR has been tested, there may still be bugs. If you find any,
- we in Team iNSTiNCT, particulary me, would be interested in hearing about
