  23. System Requirements
  24. ===================
  25. To run InstantON, you must be running Windows* 95.
  26.  
  27. To take full advantage of the power management features of InstantON,
  28. and allow it to run scheduled tasks and still save energy, you must have 
  29. an Energy Star or power-managed system that uses a BIOS that adheres 
  30. to the Advanced Power Management (APM) Specification V1.1.
  31. These systems support the Windows 95 Suspend function.
  32.  
  33. To determine whether your system supports the Suspend function, 
  34. follow these steps before you install InstantON:
  35.  
  36.    o Go to the Windows 95 Start menu, choose Settings, then
  37.      choose Control Panel.
  38.    o In the Control Panel, choose Power. (If the Power icon is missing,
  39.      your system is not power managed or has not been configured for
  40.      power management.  You can still use the Scheduler to schedule
  41.      tasks, but the tasks will only run as long as the system remains at full
  42.     power.)
  43.    o Be sure that Advanced is selected in the Power Management list,
  44.      and Always is selected for Show Suspend command on Startup menu.
  45.      Click OK and exit the Control Panel.
  46.    o Go to the Start menu and choose Suspend.
  47.    o Power-managed systems will go into low power mode and come back
  48.      out when you press a key or move the mouse. 
  49.  
  50. If your system does not suspend, or does not come back to full power,
  51. then it will not support the full power management features of
  52. InstantON.  For desktop systems, open the Control Panel, 
  53. choose the Power Icon and select Off before you install InstantON.  
  54. For laptop systems, you may want to keep power management on, but be
  55. aware that InstantON cannot reliably bring your system out of a
  56. suspended state.

  58. Support Status
  59. ==============

  61. There is no technical support provided for this applet. You
  62. use it at your own risk. Read this file and the LICENSE.DOC file
  63. carefully before installing the software.
  64.  
  65. Comments, feedback and problem reports are welcome. E-mail
  66. comments to instanton@ccm.jf.intel.com. There is no guarantee
  67. that any reported problem will be fixed now or in the future.

  69. Installing the InstantON Scheduler
  70. ==================================
  71. During installation, InstantON tests your system's ability to
  72. Suspend.  If you have not succesfully suspended and resumed your system
  73. before you install InstantON, your system may not be able to go 
  74. into Suspend and it may hang or produce unpredictable results.
  75. Follow the directions in "System Requirements" to ensure that your
  76. system can successfully suspend and resume before installing InstantON.  
  77.  
  78. To install InstantON:
  79.  
  80. 1. Unzip the self-extracting zip file, ION.EXE, by copying it to
  81.    a temporary directory (such as /temp) and running it.  Then close
  82.    the DOS window when the title bar says "Finished - ION".
  83. 2. If you have not installed InstantON before, go to step 3.
  84.    If you have previously installed InstantON on your system, you
  85.    must stop the InstantON Service Agent before over-installing.
  86.    Double click on the Service Agent icon near the system clock in
  87.    the task bar, then choose the Stop Service Agent menu item in
  88.    the File menu.
  89. 3. Run SETUP.EXE from the temporary directory. Note, when you
  90.    specify the directory to install InstantON to, that you cannot install
  91.    it in a directory with a long file name.  We recommend that you use
  92.    the default directory.
  93. 4. When the installation is complete, reboot your system as directed
  94.    for the changes to take effect.
  95. 5. After the reboot, the InstantON Service Agent will check your system's
  96.    ability to power down and back on. There may be a period when the
  97.    system is taken to a low power state.  If your system does not come 
  98.    back from this low power state within 60-90 seconds, move the mouse
  99.    or press a key to bring it back to full power.

  101. Getting Started
  102. ===============
  103.  
  104. To bring up the InstantON Scheduler applet, select the Scheduler from
  105. the InstantON group in the Programs section of the Start menu.
  106. Or simply select the InstantON Service Agent icon near the system
  107. clock in the task bar, click the right mouse button, and choose
  108. View Scheduler.
  109.  
  110. An introductory screen displays. Dismiss the screen and the Scheduler's
  111. main window displays.
  112.  
  113. Instructions on scheduling tasks and adding applications to the Scheduler
  114. can be found in the help file; look in the How To section. As an example,
  115. here is how to set up the disk defragmenter to run once a day:
  116.  
  117. 1. Bring up the Scheduler.
  118. 2. Choose New from the Application menu.
  119. 3. Select defrag.exe from the Add Application dialog that comes up.
  120. 4. Select Schedule from the Ready to Schedule dialog.
  121. 5. Select Repeated Times in the Schedule dialog.
  122. 6. Select a convenient time for the defragmentation to take place,
  123.    when the system is not likely to be in use; for example, 2:00AM.
  124. 7. Click OK.
  125.  
  126. Remember that when you are finished using your system, you must Suspend
  127. it, instead of shut it down. Use Switch to Low Power from the Scheduler's
  128. Power menu or choose Suspend from the Start menu.  Then InstantON can
  129. run the disk defragmenting utility every night at 2AM.

  131. See the help file for more information on how to use the InstantON
  132. Scheduler.

  134. Removing InstantON Software
  135. ===========================
  136.  
  137. You must stop the InstantON Service Agent before removing the InstantON
  138. Scheduler software. Double click on the Service Agent icon near the 
  139. system clock in the task bar, then choose the Stop Service Agent menu 
  140. item in the File menu.
  141.  
  142. To remove the InstantON software, choose Control Panel from the Start
  143. menu, then choose Add/Remove Programs and select InstantON. The
  144. software is immediately removed.
