- The Message System
-
- The message system is a big part of BBSs that many users don't even bother
- to use, except for messages to the SysOp. It aint that tough, and it's really
- kinda fun once you get into it.
-
-
- The Message Menu options are:
- ┌───────────────────────────┐
-
- <C>hange Conference
- Changes the message conference, or area, you are in. When you select
- this, it then displays a small prompt; just push A to list all the
- conferences. You can experiment with other options when you're
- comfortable with it. Pushing A displays a screen listing all the
- available conferences. You can then choose a message conference to
- enter that you want to read or enter messages in.
- NOTE: Every time you log on, you start out in conference #1.
-
- <R>ead Messages
- Reads messages in the current message conference. When you select this,
- it displays a small prompt; just push T to read messages in the current
- conference. If you push A instead, it reads messages in all conferences,
- starting with conference 1. It then asks you which message number to
- begin reading at.
- NOTE: You are able to read all messages that are marked PUBLIC, and any
- that are addressed From you or To you.
-
- <E>nter a Message
- Enters a message in the current conference. It will ask who you wish to
- address the message to. You then may have the option of making it a
- PUBLIC or PRIVATE message. Private messages cannot be read by anyone
- but you, the recipient, and the SysOp (if necessary). Addressing the
- message to "All" doesn't send it to all users but it makes it a public
- message that anyone is free to read.
- NOTE: Be aware what conference you are in while posting a message.
-
- Read <N>ew Messages
- Reads unread messages in the current conference or all conferences. The
- BBS keeps a record of the number of the latest message you have read in
- all conferences, or a "high water mark". When you select this option, it
- scans the messages and shows you any messages that were entered after the
- last one you've read.
-
- Text <S>earch Messages
- Searches all messages in the current conference or all conferences for
- a specific text. Any messages found containing that text will be shown to
- you.
-
- Read <Y>our Personal Mail
- Just like the Read Messages option, but it instead finds old messages
- that are addressed to you. Note that the BBS saves messages for about 6
- months unless the recipient deletes them upon receipt.
- NOTE: Sometimes things happen like at logon you accidently pass by a
- message you wanted to reply to. This option is useful for finding
- your lost mail.
-
- Set Conference <Q>ueue
- You can "queue" your favorite message conferences. When selecting
- Read Messages, Text Search Messages, or Read Your Personal Mail, you
- can choose to do it for all conferences, the current conference, or
- your queued conferences. Thus queueing is useful if you don't want
- to bother with conferences other than your favorites. It is also used
- with TriMail, below.
-
- <T>riMail
- This is an advanced option and is available only to subscribers. It's
- easier and more enjoyable to read and reply to mail while offline,
- instead of wasting your BBS minutes to do mail. You would enter this
- TriMail door, download a mail packet, hang up, and read and reply to
- messages in your free time with an offline mail reader. Then later you
- could log back on this BBS, enter TriMail again and upload your
- messages. If you're a subscriber and would like help with this just let
- me know.
