  44. INSTALLATION AND "BRANDING" INSTRUCTIONS
  45. ----------------------------------------

  47.    This section explains how to install a downloaded copy of
  48.    4DOS.
  49.    
  50.    [If you have a copy on diskette or CD, or a copy purchased
  51.    electronically, we assume you have already completed the installation
  52.    -- otherwise this file would not be visible!  If you need to
  53.    reinstall your purchased copy of 4DOS, just restart
  54.    the INSTALL program.]
  55.  
  56.    There are just three steps you need to take to install a downloaded
  57.    copy of 4DOS:
  58.  
  59.       >> Extract all the files to a new directory (do not use a directory
  60.          you're using for other products, or for a previous version of
  61.          4DOS).
  62.  
  63.       >> Start 4DOS.  It will "install itself".
  64.  
  65.       >> If you are upgrading a previously purchased copy, "brand"
  66.          4DOS with your name and serial number.
  67.  
  68.    Additional details on these steps are below.  For branding and manual
  69.    installation instructions see the sections with those headings below.
  70.  
  71.    When installing 4DOS under Windows 95 we recommend that you do NOT
  72.    use a "long" directory name.  If you do, you will have to know and
  73.    use the equivalent short name to load 4DOS in CONFIG.SYS; it's easier
  74.    to simply use a short name from the beginning.  (This is not a 4DOS
  75.    limitation.  It's because DOS, which starts before Windows 95 and
  76.    loads the primary command processor, cannot handle long file names.
  77.    While 4DOS fully supports long file names, to make DOS work well it
  78.    is best to install 4DOS in a directory with a short name.)
  79.  
  80.    You can view any of the documentation files on-line, or copy them to
  81.    your printer.  The Introduction and Installation Guide in 4DOS.TXT
  82.    has page breaks, headers and footers; all other documentation files
  83.    are unpaginated ASCII text.

  86. "Self-Installation"
  87.  
  88.    To begin the installation process, simply run the program file,
  89.    4DOS.COM, from a prompt.  This will automatically start the
  90.    self-installation file _4INST.BTM, which will finish installing
  91.    4DOS on your system.
  92.  
  93.    _4INST will prompt you for permission before each installation step,
  94.    and no system files will be modified without asking you first.
  95.    
  96.    When the installation is finished, _4INST renames itself to _4INST.BTX,
  97.    so that it will not be run again.  (If installation terminates
  98.    abnormally, _4INST may not be renamed, and will then run again the
  99.    next time you start the program.)

  102. Manual Installation
  103.  
  104.    For complete manual installation instructions, see the Introduction
  105.    and Installation Guide in the file 4DOS.TXT.  The detailed
  106.    instructions for 4DOS are in Chapter 5.

  108.    If you choose to perform a manual installation you should rename the
  109.    automated installation file, _4INST.BTM (we recommend renaming it to
  110.    _4INST.BTX, which is what the file itself does when it's finished).
  111.    If you don't, it will start automatically the first time you run
  112.    4DOS.

  115. Branding
  116.  
  117.    If you are upgrading from a previously purchased copy you may need to
  118.    run the "branding" program to install your name and serial number
  119.    in 4DOS (trial version users can skip this section).
  120.  
  121.    In most cases the self-installation process will run the brand program
  122.    for you if it is available.  If it is not, or you need to perform the
  123.    branding manually for another reason, use the instructions here.
  124.  
  125.    Your previous version's brand program may be the older version named
  126.    BRAND.EXE, or the newer version named BR4DOS.EXE.  In either case,
  127.    in order to perform the branding you will need the brand program, and
  128.    the registered name, serial number, and validation code which came
  129.    with your purchased copy of 4DOS.
  130.  
  131.    (If you have lost your branding information it is replaceable, but a
  132.    small charge is required as recreating the codes is a multi-step
  133.    process.  To request replacement codes contact JP Software at
  134.    sales@jpsoft.com, or at one of the addresses listed at the start of
  135.    this file.)

  137.    To run either BRAND.EXE or BR4DOS.EXE use these simple steps:
  138.  
  139.       (1) Start 4DOS or go to an existing 4DOS prompt.
  140.  
  141.       (2) Change to the directory where 4DOS.COM is installed, and
  142.       verify that both 4DOS.COM and BRAND.EXE or BR4DOS.EXE are in
  143.       that directory.
  144.  
  145.       (3) Locate the branding information which came with your copy of
  146.       4DOS.
  147.  
  148.       (4) Enter the command BRAND or BR4DOS and follow the instructions
  149.       on the screen.
  150.  
  151.    If you attempt to brand your downloaded copy and receive the message
  152.    "brand installation error 4" or "contact JP Software or your dealer
  153.    for an upgrade", then you are not eligible to download and brand a
  154.    trial version of this release -- instead, you must purchase the
  155.    upgrade.  See UPGFORM.TXT for an order form.  Once you have ordered
  156.    an upgrade you can continue to use the trial version until your
  157.    upgrade arrives.

  159.    If you receive any other error, you have probably mistyped your name,
  160.    serial number, or validation code, or are attempting to use the brand
  161.    program or codes from one product with another product, which will
  162.    not work.

  175.       anywhere on your system by entering only part of its name.  See

  181.           products, either through interactive dialogs or on the command

  203. REVISION INFORMATION

  206. This revision B fixes the following minor problems in revision A:
  207.  
  208.    >> The /J switch for the DIR command disabled most other extension-
  209.       based features (e.g. sort by extension, colorization).  SELECT had
  210.       the same problem, and additionally did not return names correctly
  211.       when /J was used.
  212.  
  213.    >> Attempting to use a negative loop counter in the DO command, such
  214.       as "DO -1", could cause the current session to terminate abruptly.
  215.  
  216.    >> The trial version self-install batch file failed when DecimalChar
  217.       was not a period ["."].
  218.  
  219.    >> The installation software was not converting HistWinXXXX lines in
  220.       the .INI file to PopupWinXXXX.

  222.    >> The disk free / disk used disk total figures reported for FAT32
  223.       volumes by DIR, FREE and related commands and functions were
  224.       incorrectly limited to 2 GB under plain MS-DOS 7.1 when the Win95B
