  43. INSTALLATION AND "BRANDING" INSTRUCTIONS
  44. ----------------------------------------

  46.    This section explains how to install a downloaded copy of
  47.    4OS2.
  48.    
  49.    [If you have a copy on diskette or CD, or a copy purchased
  50.    electronically, we assume you have already completed the installation
  51.    -- otherwise this file would not be visible!  If you need to
  52.    reinstall your purchased copy of 4OS2, just restart
  53.    the INSTALL program.]
  54.  
  55.    There are just three steps you need to take to install a downloaded
  56.    copy of 4OS2:
  57.  
  58.       >> Extract all the files to a new directory (do not use a directory
  59.          you're using for other products, or for a previous version of
  60.          4OS2).
  61.  
  62.       >> Start 4OS2.  It will "install itself".
  63.  
  64.       >> If you are upgrading a previously purchased copy, "brand"
  65.          4OS2 with your name and serial number.
  66.  
  67.    Additional details on these steps are below.  For branding and manual
  68.    installation instructions see the sections with those headings below.
  69.  
  70.    You can view any of the documentation files on-line, or copy them to
  71.    your printer.  The Introduction and Installation Guide in 4OS2.TXT
  72.    has page breaks, headers and footers; all other documentation files
  73.    are unpaginated ASCII text.

  76. "Self-Installation"
  77.  
  78.    To begin the installation process, simply run the program file,
  79.    4OS2.EXE, from a prompt or from your desktop.  This will
  80.    automatically start the self-installation file _4INST.BTM, which will
  81.    finish installing 4OS2 on your system.
  82.  
  83.    _4INST will prompt you for permission before each installation step,
  84.    and no system files will be modified without asking you first.
  85.    
  86.    When the installation is finished, _4INST renames itself to _4INST.BTX,
  87.    so that it will not be run again.  (If installation terminates
  88.    abnormally, _4INST may not be renamed, and will then run again the
  89.    next time you start the program.)

  92. Manual Installation
  93.  
  94.    For complete manual installation instructions, see the Introduction
  95.    and Installation Guide in the file 4OS2.TXT.  The detailed
  96.    instructions for 4OS2 are in Chapter 6.

  98.    If you choose to perform a manual installation you should rename the
  99.    automated installation file, _4INST.BTM (we recommend renaming it to
  100.    _4INST.BTX, which is what the file itself does when it's finished).
  101.    If you don't, it will start automatically the first time you run
  102.    4OS2.

  105. Branding
  106.  
  107.    If you are upgrading from a previously purchased copy you may need to
  108.    run the "branding" program to install your name and serial number
  109.    in 4OS2 (trial version users can skip this section).
  110.  
  111.    Your previous version's brand program may be the older version named
  112.    BRAND.EXE, or the newer version named BROS2.EXE.  In either case,
  113.    in order to perform the branding you will need the brand program, and
  114.    the registered name, serial number, and validation code which came
  115.    with your purchased copy of 4OS2.
  116.  
  117.    (If you have lost your branding information it is replaceable, but a
  118.    small charge is required as recreating the codes is a multi-step
  119.    process.  To request replacement codes contact JP Software at
  120.    sales@jpsoft.com, or at one of the addresses listed at the start of
  121.    this file.)

  123.    The older BRAND.EXE program modifies the 4OS2.EXE file, and can only
  124.    be used while 4OS2 is not running.  To use it:
  125.  
  126.       (1) Exit from all copies of 4OS2.
  127.  
  128.       (2) Start a command prompt session.
  129.  
  130.       (3) Change to the directory where 4OS2.EXE is installed, and
  131.       verify that both 4OS2.EXE and BRAND.EXE are in that directory.
  132.  
  133.       (4) Locate the branding information which came with your copy of
  134.       4OS2 (information from other products won't work!).
  135.  
  136.       (5) Enter the command BRAND and follow the instructions on the
  137.       screen.
  138.    
  139.    The newer BROS2.EXE program does not have the same restrictions, and
  140.    can be run using this simpler procedure:
  141.  
  142.       (1) Start 4OS2.
  143.  
  144.       (2) Change to the directory where 4OS2.EXE is installed, and
  145.       verify that both 4OS2.EXE and BROS2.EXE are in that directory.
  146.  
  147.       (3) Locate the branding information which came with your copy of
  148.       4OS2.
  149.  
  150.       (4) Enter the command BROS2 and follow the instructions on the
  151.       screen.
  152.  
  153.    If you attempt to brand your downloaded copy and receive the message
  154.    "brand installation error 4" or "contact JP Software or your dealer
  155.    for an upgrade", then you are not eligible to download and brand a
  156.    trial version of this release -- instead, you must purchase the
  157.    upgrade.  See UPGFORM.TXT for an order form.  Once you have ordered
  158.    an upgrade you can continue to use the trial version until your
  159.    upgrade arrives.

  161.    If you receive any other error, you have probably mistyped your name,
  162.    serial number, or validation code, or are attempting to use the brand
  163.    program or codes from one product with another product, which will
  164.    not work.
