- A Full Featured Game detailing a cops ups and downs on a daily patrol

- places you will need to find. And get yourself some good protection,
- you will need it. Buy yourself that special weapon that fits like a

- ╔══════════════════════╗
- ║█▓▒░ INSTALLATION ░▒▓█║
- ╚══════════════════════╝
- ╔═════════════════╗
- NOTE: For Sysops Upgrading, see ║█▓▒░ UPGRADE ░▒▓█║ below or Sysop.Doc.
- ╚═════════════════╝
- 1. Unzip TC254.ZIP.
- Unzip TCANSI.ZIP.
-
- NOTE: TC.OV$ will be renamed by TCC to TC.OVR. DO NOT RENAME
-
- 2. Type TCC to access the node setup screen.
-
- OPTIONS AVAILABLE IN THE NODE SETUP
-
- A. Node Number:
-
- This is the current node being edited for the BBS. If you have a
- multi-node system, set up one node, and just keep changing this
- number for each node or use the ] key (Next Node) from the setup
- menu. This nodes information will be duplicated for each subsequent
- node. Be sure to setup a NODE 0 for local use. (Dropfiletype = LOCAL)
-
- B. SysOp Name
-
- C. BBS Name
-
- D. Registration Number
-
- E. BBS Type
-
- This does not necessarily mean what software you run, but rather
- the type of dropfile used by your BBS. Choose the drop file type
- rather than the BBS Software.
-
- 1) DOORSYS (Using DOOR.SYS)
- 2) Phoenix (Using INFO.BBS)
- 3) TriBBS (Using TRIBBS.SYS)
- 4) WWIV (Using CHAIN.TXT)
- 5) 2am-bbs (Using JUMPER.DAT)
- 6) PCBoard12 (Using PCBOARD.SYS)
- 7) PCBoard14 (Using PCBOARD.SYS)
- 8) PCBoard15 (Using PCBOARD.SYS)
- 9) Spitfire (Using SFDOORS.DAT)
- A) Wildcat (Using CALLINFO.BBS)
- B) RBBS16+ (Using DORINFO1.DEF)
- C) RBBS16+ (Using DORINFOx.DEF)
- D) QBBS (Using DORINFO1.DEF)
- E) QBBS (Using DORINFOx.DEF)
- F) Local (Does not use drop file)
-
- F. BBS Drop File Path
-
- Set this to the path where your BBS creates its dropfile.
-
- NOTE: When typing in Drop File Path, be SPECIFIC. i.e.; for
- Wildcat use C:\WILDCAT\WCWORK\NODE1 for node 1 etc.
-
- G. Fossil
-
- This tells how to handle communications with your modem.
- You have three choices here:
-
- 1) Internal Com Routines
- 2) Using Standard Fossil Driver (BNU, X00)
- 3) Using Extended Fossil Driver (NOT recommended)
- 4) Digi Board
-
- H. Locked Baud Rate
-
- If you have the communications port locked on your BBS, then you
- must lock it here as well. If you do not, users could get booted,
- or lose some of the screens in the game.
-
- 1) 0 (Port Not Locked)
- 2) 2400
- 3) 9600
- 4) 14400
- 5) 19200
- 6) 38400
- 7) 57600
- 8) 64000
- 9) 115200
-
- I. Comport
-
- This is where communications with the modem is passed. Most BBS
- software writes the COMport in the dropfile. If the COMport can't
- be found, this is where you will direct the communications.
-
- 1) Read Standard Com Port From The Drop File (Default)
- 2) Non-standard Comport (Set Port, Hex Address, Irq)
- 3) Set Com Port Number (NOT Recommended)
-
- NOTE: 2) Non-standard Comport - If you run a multi-node BBS with
- non-standard COM ports and IRQ's, or you use a DigiBoard,
- you can set them here.
-
- J. Status Line
-
- The status line is displayed on the local display only. ON or OFF.
-
- K. Use Direct Screen Writes
-
- Change this if you are having "bleeding" problems with the screen
- refreshing. YES or NO. (NO will run slower)
-
- L. User Access Level (Functional in Registered version only)
-
- UAL allows you to input a security level. Typically, this
- would be the HIGHEST BBS NON-SUBSCRIBER security level.
- Users with security level ABOVE this level would be allowed
- to play the registered version. Users with a security level
- EQUAL AND BELOW this level would only be allowed to play
- the non-registered version.
-
- NOTE: Security levels above the security level set here have
- unlimited play.
-
- NOTE: UAL does NOT work with drop file type PCBOARD.SYS. If you
- run a PCBoard BBS and choose a drop file type other than
- PCBOARD.SYS, and one that works with PCBOARD, UAL will
- then work. (DOOR.SYS is the suggested drop file type)
-
- NOTE: UAL.ANS is an ANSI screen, totally editable by you to say
- what you want. There are some restrictions, so a thorough
- test of the screen after editing is HIGHLY advisable.
-
- ]. Next Node
-
- [. Previous Node
-
- Q. Quit
-
- 6. Make your BBS Door batch file looking something like:
-
- SINGLE NODE SYSTEMS:
-
- @ECHO OFF
- C:
- CD C:\BBS\DOORS\TC <-- The path for Top Cop!
- TC.EXE 1
- CD C:\BBS <-- Back to the BBS Directory
-
- MULTI-NODE SYSTEMS:
-
- PCBoard Multi-Node Sample Batch File using %PCBNODE%
-
- @ECHO OFF
- C:
- CD C:\PCB\DOOR\TOPCOP
- TC.EXE %PCBNODE%%
- %PCBDRIVE%
- CD %PCBDIR%
- BOARD
-
- WildCat Multi-node Sample Batch File using %WCNODEID%
-
- @ECHO OFF
- C:
- CD C:\WILDCAT\DOORS\TOPCOP
- TC.EXE %WCNODEID%
- CD C:\WILDCAT
-
- NOTE: I use BNU fossil driver for Top Cop! My batch file looks like
- the below and BNU is in a directory in my path statement.
-
- @ECHO OFF
- BNU (Installs fossil driver)
- CD C:\GAMES\TC
- TC.EXE %WCNODEID%
- BNU /U (Uninstalls fossil driver)
- CD\WILDCAT
-
- A NON-REGISTERED copy allows all options to be browsed. However; only
- required options are functional.
-
- There is NO daily maintenance.
-
-
- ╔════════════════════╗
- ║█▓▒░ LOCAL PLAY ░▒▓█║
- ╚════════════════════╝
-
- Create a TC.0 node file with the attributes from node 1 except:
-
- BBSTYPE LOCAL
- LOCKBAUD 0
-
- Typing TC /L at the DOS prompt will allow local play.
-
- If you use another Node for Local Play, then create that Nodes
- BBS TYPE as LOCAL and call Local Play by typing TC (and the Node #).
- i.e., Node 3 - BBS Type is LOCAL - Type TC 3 to run at DOS Prompt.
-
- NOTE: TC /L will still run local, BUT if you have a user on Node 0
- and you use TC /L, there MAY be conflict.
-
-
- ╔════════════════════════╗
- ║█▓▒░ ADD-ON MODULES ░▒▓█║
- ╚════════════════════════╝
-
- NOTE: AOMs from earlier versions will NOT operate with TC254.
- ONLY AOMs with v2.50 number or higher will work with TC254.
-
- Add-On Modules are executable programs that enchance the play of TC!
- Access to AOMs is limited within TC! No AOM may be duplicated. Any
- attempt to do so will result in failure of the duplicated AOM to run.
-
- AOMs are hidden features. They will NOT appear on any menu.
-
- Visit TOP COP! Web Site: topcop.home.ml.org (http://www. is NOT needed)
-
- to get the latest AOMs.
-
- The Alley Gone Fishin'
- The Black Market The Police Academy
- The Park The Health Club
- The Library Roadside UniSex Bathroom
-
- are current AOMs available as of the release date of TC254!
- However; we are diligently working on creating more.
-
- AOM SLOTS in the AOM Editor are available for registration. The AOMs
- themselves are free and can be switched out to allow some AOMs to be
- played registered and others to be played unregistered. See TC.REG
- for pricing of AOM SLOTS.
-
- The AOM Editor options are:
-
- 1. Add AOM 4. Install AOM 7. Switch AOMs
- 2. De-Activate AOM 5. Kill AOM 8. Test AOM
- 3. Edit AOM 6. Register SLOT
-
- 1. Add AOM:
- This allows adding an AOM. AOMs will be shipped with a name similar
- to AOM1.EXE with a control file called AOM1. TCC will automatically
- Add the AOM. The Sysop must INSTALL the AOM.
-
- 2. De-Activate AOM:
- This de-activates an AOM or removes the Menu and Key to invoke the AOM,
- thus, removing the AOM from play, but not removing it from the AOM Editor.
-
- 3. Edit AOM:
- This allows the Sysop to edit the location and the key to invoke the AOM.
-
- 4. Install AOM:
- This will install an AOM. When chosen, you will be presented with a list
- of 14 Top Cop! menus. Choose one. Then you will be presented with
- a list of possible Keys that can invoke the AOM. Choose the Key.
-
- 5. Kill AOM:
- This will remove the entry for that chosen AOM from the AOM list.
- This does NOT delete the .EXE from the hard drive. To Add AOM again,
- choose Add AOM.
-
- 6. Register Slot:
- This allows for the registration of the SLOT. ALL AOMs are FREE!
- The AOM will not run registered until the SLOT is registered.
-
- SLOT #0 is shipped registered. Registration Number: 1
-
- 7. Switch AOM:
- This allows the Sysop to SWITCH AOMs from an unregistered SLOT to
- a registered SLOT and vice versa.
-
- 8. Test AOM:
- This allows the Sysop to test and AOM. If the AOM is in an unregistered
- SLOT, then the AOM will run unregistered. To test the AOM as registered,
- SWITCH the AOM to a registered SLOT and the AOM will run registered.

- ║█▓▒░ RESTRICTIONS ON THE UNREGISTERED GAME ░▒▓█║
- ╚═══════════════════════════════════════════════╝
-
- Until the game is registered the following restrictions are in effect:
-
- a. Player Editor is non-functional.
- You can only use the defaults. It is still possible to SEE the
- settings, but not change them. Each item is further defined
- when the item letter is pressed. These may be viewed with an
- unregistered copy.
-
- b. Advancement past the 3rd Level (Sergeant) is restricted.
-
- c. Registering the game enables both of the above and allows you
- to alter the game settings.
-
-
-
- ╔══════════════════════════════════════════╗
- ║█▓▒░ WHAT TO DO IF THERE ARE PROBLEMS ░▒▓█║
- ╚══════════════════════════════════════════╝
-
- Every effort is made to ensure that the game runs correctly before it is
- released. If you are experiencing problems, please do the following
- BEFORE calling me:
-
- 1. Read ALL of the TC.DOC to ensure you have setup the program and have
- met all the program requirements.
-
-
- ╔═══════════════════════╗
- ║█▓▒░ MULTINODE USE ░▒▓█║
- ╚═══════════════════════╝
-
- This game supports multinode use and provides automatic multi-tasker
- support (time slice releasing) for a wide variety of multi-taskers.
-
-
- ╔═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
- ║█▓▒░ COMMON PROBLEMS (LOCKED BAUDS, HIGH SPEED MODEMS, ETC.) ░▒▓█║
- ╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
-
- 1. A problem in catching the last Most Wanted since v2.51 has been
- seen. An option in the Editor on page 2 (press Z for page 2) has
- been installed. If you are upgrading from a version prior to 2.52,
- then you will need to utilize this option. But only once. This
- option however; is there for you to use at your discretion and can
- be used by both registered and unregistered versions.
-
- 2. The game does NOT require a fossil driver to run. (see #5)
-
- 3. If you are running a high speed modem (9600 baud or above), then I
- suggest you run your bbs/mailer/doors at a locked baud rate. On
- high speed error correcting modems, locking the baud rate will have
- a noticeable increase on the speed of text that is sent. It's
- beyond the scope of this document to discuss configuring your BBS
- and mailer for a locked baud rate. You may wish to consult those
- docs for information on that. Here are a few things to keep in mind
- when setting up TC with a fixed baud rate:
-
- a. I highly recommend using a FOSSIL driver when using a locked
- baud rate. This game will work at high speeds without one
- though. BNU is a good fossil driver which can even be loaded
- and unloaded before and after you run this game.
-
- b. If you are using a fossil, then make sure to tell the fossil
- that the port is locked. For BNU, to lock com1: at 38,400,
- you would use something like "L0=38400" on BNU's command line.
-
- c. If you lock the baud for one program, it must be locked for
- EVERYTHING. You can't lock the baud for just this game, and
- not your BBS/mailer.
-
- 4. What follows is some information on possible strange situations
- that may occur:
-
- a. Low speed users can play the game, but high speed users get
- garbage.
-
- * If you are not using the DORINFOx.DEF or DOOR.SYS dropfile,
- then you may wish to find a converter program to convert
- whatever dropfile your BBS produces to the DORINFOx.DEF or
- DOOR.SYS.
-
- * Several converter programs are readily available on most BBS
- systems. CallDoor is a good one.
-
- * If you are using something other than the DOOR.SYS dropfile,
- then I always suggest trying to use DOOR.SYS if possible. It
- is the most reliable method and has had the most testing. If
- that is not possible, try DORINFOx.DEF as an alternative.
-
- b. The game hangs up when a user enters the game.
-
- * Sounds like the game is getting the wrong baud rate somehow.
- Try switching over to the DOOR.SYS dropfile method if possible.
-
- c. Text and screens are getting cut off.
-
- * If you are running with a locked baud, then this could be
- caused by some sort of FLOW CONTROL problem. Try using a
- fossil if you aren't already.
-
- d. A door locks up node 1. This can happen with fossils.
-
- * This happens with fossils or the internal communications
- routines because it uses the default comport of 1 when NONE
- is found in the dropfile. Make sure the right port is shown
- in the dropfile.
-
- e. ANSI is reflected correctly on the local screen but the user is
- getting garbage.
-
- * Assuming the user has ANSI installed, then most likely the
- problem is at your end. Make sure the dropfile is passing the
- locked port rate INSTEAD of the actual connect rate. If it is
- not passing the locked port rate, then you may need to use a
- different dropfile format OR use a dropfile converter program
- to change the line to show the locked port rate INSTEAD of the
- actual connect rate.
-
- 5. Maximus BBS has reported a problem when using DOOR.SYS dropfile.
- There are no obvious reasons for this dropfile not to work, unless
- it is of an old style DOOR.SYS. However, DORINFOx.DEF works great
- with TC and Maximus BBS.
-
- 6. Some systems running through Win95 have reported problems. I have
- found that adding a fossil driver will allow TC! to run. I personally
- use BNU. It is by far the easiest to install and can be UNINSTALLED
- on exiting TC!. Place BNU.COM in a directory in your path statement
- or place BNU.COM in your TC! directory. BNU has many switches, however;
- I have not found the need to use any of them, though they can and
- should be used if necessary. Read BNU.DOC for details. (BNU170.ZIP)

- 7. Some problems have been experience with the Most Wanted being reset.
- There is an option in the editor for a manual reset of the Most Wanted.
- The Most Wanted should reset automatically once this is done. Use
- this option wisely and infrequently. I would suggest waiting no more
- than one week of trying to catch that last MW before using this option.

-
- It is possible that something could happen to your game data file.
- A power outage, game crash, or other event could damage the data files.
- If your game is unrecoverable then use the GAME RESET option in the
- editor. This option is available to both UNREGISTERD and REGISTERED.

- We have made every attempt to make sure the game is free of bugs, BUT the
- possibility always exists that one may have been missed by us or the
- beta sites. If you find a bug, or have a suggestion or comment to make,
- which would make future versions better, please print out the TC.BUG
- mailer, fill it out, and send it to us. We read ALL of them and those
- people that lead me to find a bug or generate a better game will receive
- credit in the game documentation.
-
- PLEASE DO NOT NOTIFY US OF PROBLEMS AND EXPECT US TO FIX THEM, IF YOU
- HAVE FAILED TO PROVIDE US WITH THE TC.BUG.
-
- Thanks for your interest in TOP COP!
