- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. FAM/2 (c) 1995-1997 by Frank Barwich ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- FAM/2 is a program, what works with a Voice-Modems and your computer wich makes
- an answering machine of your computer. At this moment FAM/2 works with modems
- of the firma ZyXEL and the most voice-modems with a rockwell-chipset. With
- FAM/2 you have also a complete faxmachine. FAM/2 knows when a caller calls if
- it is a voice mail, a fax or data. You don't need another faxprogram to convert
- received faxes. You can also convert faxes to BMP and print them out to your
- favorite printer.
-
- After starting FAM/2 you see a window wich you can drag and drop to another
- position. The next time you start FAM/2 the window appears at the same spot.
- You can drag and drop another font and color to the window. This future is
- available for every FAM/2 window.
-
- This window lets you see how many messages you received and also how many faxes
- you received with FAM/2. In the right corner you see the current action wich
- you can also see in the log file wich you can open to see what has happened at
- a time. Also the current time is displayed in the right corner. You can toggle
- this on and off in the Settings - Notebook
-
- With the right mouse button you get a popup menu.
-
- The popupmenu has the following functions:
-
- Settings
-
- When you choose this menu option you get Settings - Notebook This notebook you
- have allready seen when you first started FAM/2
-
- Fax
-
- This menu option manages the Recieve Faxes, andRecieved Faxes With this
- function you can receive a fax immediatly: When you pick up the phone and hear
- a faxbeep, you can make the receiving fax facility immediatly with this menu
- option.
-
- When you connected your handset parallel, you have to hang up the handset when
- the modem took over the line.
-
- If this is a useal way that you hear a fax beep tone you could make the option
- "Activate when Rings" active. You don't have to search to the associate window
- then. You find this option in: Settings - Notebook.
-
- When you activate "Received Faxes" you will see a dialog box where you find the
- received faxes, it gives you the possibility to view or print received faxes.
-
- Hide Window
-
- The FAM/2 window will be hide but the program keeps on working the same way as
- it does when you see the window. You have to remind that FAM/2 stays active on
- the opened comport. When you activated the option "Activate FAM/2 window when
- Ring received" the FAM/2 window
-
- Voice
-
- Different menu options for voice operating are available below: Received
- Messages und Voice messages and noice control.
-
- When you choose this option you will see the Voice-edit dialog. This dialog is
- for both menu options identical. Where you put your voice message files you can
- setup in the "Path" tab in Settings - Notebook
-
- The option Take a call directly gives you the opportunity to answer an
- incomming call directly. The greeting message will not be played. You can reach
- this menu option also with double click in the status window.
-
- Help
-
- Some other help functions you will see at this point: Help for help you get an
- OS/2 help dialog window. Help, where you will become help for this program. You
- can get help from every menu option whit the F1 key
-
- Exit
-
- FAM/2 will be closed. Attention: even if there is an incomming message at this
- moment, FAM/2 will close!!
-
- When you where too slow to pick up the phone and a greeting message has been
- started, you can take over the line to press ESC. The mesaage will stop and you
- can talk with the caller yourself.

-
- This settings controls your modem
-
- Modem
-
- Choose the modem you have. If your Modem not in the List, try the Geric
- Rockwell Modem.
-
- Init-String
-
- Here you can give an initialisation string wich will be send to the modem when
- the modem will be restted. Mostly "AT&F" will do the best.
-
- Exit-String
-
- This command will send to your modem, when FAM/2 terminates.
-
- Dialcommand
-
- Here you give in the dial command wich FAM/2 has to sent when you call out.
- When you have to dial first a zero to get a line out, please place this in the
- following wayof speed between modem and computer.
-
- When you use a ZyXEL-Modem and only want to use the ADPCM2-Code. this will go
- to 38400 BPS. For ADPCM3 you need at least 57600 BPS (otherwise you could hear
- anything else ut noice!) For ADPCM4 you also need 57600 BPS. Attention The
- Modems of the U-1496-Serie of ZyXEL supports only after Firmware 6.13! When
- ysing a Elsa Microlink TQV for ADPCM4 38.400 BPS will be enough because the
- Rockwell-Chipsatz only works with 7200 Samples/Second.
-
- The orginal comport drivers of IBM don't support DTE-range of more then 57600.
- With OS/2 Warp 4.0 they do. The SIO supports the setting of 76800, this is not
- equivalent because the SIO the comport speed reduces to 57600.
-
- Silence sensitivity
-
- The Silence sensitivity will be the sensitivity for an incomming call.
-
- The values between 0-31 (for Zyxel and 0-3 for Rockwell Chips) you can give for
- this setting. When this value is set to 0, the modem don't interrupt any call
- when there is not any noice at all. You have to change this value to find out
- if the sensitivity is not to high or to low.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Voice-settings ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- On this tab you find the settings for recording and playback messages and noice.
-
- Compression
-
- ADPCM4 compression works only with ZyXEL-Modem if you have a ZyXEL-Elite-Modem,
- or ZyXEL of the U-1496 series with a ROM-Version from version6.13. Otherwise
- you must chose ADPCM3 or ADPCM2. When you have a Elsa-Microlink you can choose
- ADPCM4 here. You can also refer to ADPCM-code
-
- Recording and playback
-
- You can setup FAM/2 to record and playback messages from line, modemspeaker or
- MMPM/2 (as the soundblaster is)
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. ADPCM-code ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Voice you must see as a well form. When you would edit this digital, you need a
- format. ADPCM4 is the best quality and ADPCM2 the lowest quality.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Path ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- You can place the path where FA</2 should write and read files/messages wich
- are recorded or wich are received.
-
- Messages and Sound
-
- You can setup FAM/2 on this tab to play a message when an incomming call is
- received. Also wich message or beep you want to play after a message. FAM/2
- supports VOC- ZVD- RVD- and WAV- files
-
- Recieved messages
-
- In this path FAM/2 stores the received calls/messages.
-
- Received Faxes
-
- In this path FAM/2 stores the received faxes
-
- Faxes to send
-
- In this path FAM/2 searches faxes when you want to send a fax
-
- Personal messages
-
- FAM/2 has the opportunity to play personal messages to people you give a secret
- code. In this path FAM/2 stores the personal calls/messages.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Answering-Machine Settings ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Here you see the settings for your mailbox. When you don't setup the mailbox
- rigth, then will FAM/2 fail to work. When a call is comming in, FAM/2 tries to
- find the greetings you choosed here, does FAM/2 not find the voice file, the
- answer thread will be stopped even before going on hook. You can see the
- failure in the logfile.
-
- Greeting messages
-
- The messages wich will be go out when a caller calls you find here. All RVD- or
- ZVD-Files (wich modem you are useing), VOC- and WAV-Files, wich are stored in
- the Path for "Greeting Messagesunter and noice". You can choose more then one
- message. If you do, the messages will be played random. When you choose WAV-
- und VOC-Data files this files will be converted when a call comes in The best
- thing you can do is convert them before to for example a ZVD- file and choose
- the converted ZVD file as outgoing message. This because when the program has
- to convert it after a ring, it will use several seconds before the file will be
- heared by the person who calls.
-
- End Message
-
- You can set a voice file wich will be played if the modem detects a period of
- silence, or when a maximum of seconds to record a call has been reached (this
- time you can also set) Also here: When you choose WAV- und VOC-Data files this
- fies will be converted when a call comes in The best thing you can do is
- convert them before to for example a ZVD- file and choose the converted ZVD
- file as outgoing message. This because when the program has to convert it after
- a ring, it will use several seconds before the file will be heared by the
- person who calls.
-
- Signaltone
-
- When you don't like your default beep, you can record your favorite beep tone
- and choose it here.
-
- You can use the button Edit to record voice messages or to convert existing
- message files
-
- Number of rings
-
- With the option "Action after X rings" you tell the program to go on action
- after X rings. When you set this value to a high number, you have always the
- opportunity to take every phone yourself instead of FAM/2. When you are not in,
- FAM/2 will answer the phone anyway. Consider that some fax machines are very
- quick with going of the hook when they are not answered at once!
-
- The option "When message received answer after X rings" is a toll save option:
- when you are calling your own answering machine and you hear three rings (and
- not five as the setting above: there where not any calls at this moment) then
- you know that you have received messages. If you here five rings (as in our
- example) you know you don't have any calls received and you can hangup at once.
-
- Maximum message record time
-
- Here you set the time an incomming call is allowed to be. When you set this
- value to 0, the program hangs up after the greeting message
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Distance control ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- You may enter a code with a maximum of 20 for long distance control. When you
- call to your own answering machine and type the security code you will have
- control about your answering machine from wherever you are!
-
- In the listbox beneeth you can assign functions for every code. When you typed
- your security code FAM/2 will give a beep so you know your code is accepted.
- After that you can tpye the key you assigned to let FAM/2 do the action you
- defined. To end your long distance control you simply hangup. When FAM/2 does
- not hear any tones during 10 seconds, it assumes you are not longer interested
- in using FAM/2 and hangs up. You have the following options:
-
- Not assigned - This key is not assigned to any function.
-
- New messages - You will hear all new messages that you haven't heard yet.
-
- All messages - You will hear all messages received.
-
- Delete all messages played back - The messages you have listened to are
- deleted, also from your harddisk.
-
- Record a new message - You can record a new greeting message from wherever you
- are. You will hear a beep and you can record the new greeting. (The silence
- correction is deactivated during this action!) When you are ready press '*' or
- '#' Attention So that the next caller does not hear the '*' or '#' tone the
- last second of your message will be truncated, so make a short pause after you
- spoke your text and then press '*' or '#'.
-
- QUIT FAM/2 - You know what this mean...
-
- On the second page you can leave some messages for personal calls. You can give
- people a code wich allow them to hear a personal message specially for them.
-
- And also FAM/2 gives you the possibility to start a program on your computer
- from wherever you are. You can assign them to the buttons. When you pressed the
- right button, FAM/2 lets hear a beep that tells you you pressed the rigth
- button to start a program.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. Fax ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Faxrecognition
-
- Here you leave your fax nummer. First type your countrycode then your fax
- number
-
- Faxpolling
-
- Faxpolling means: somebody calls you with a fax machine but does not send a fax
- but gets one from you! You must define wich fax you want to send. FAM/2
- supports TIFF Class F Format (as from FaxWorks) and the ZFax-Format. Clicking
- on file-dialog gives you a dialog where you can select a faxfile.
-
- Send a fax after receiving one
-
- FAM/2 gives you the opportunity to send a fax to another fax-number, when FAM/2
- has received a Fax. You activate this option by a click the checkbox Also you
- can set the time that FAM/2 has to retry when for example the line is busy and
- how many times FAM/2 should try to send the fax when it has not already sent
- it.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. Others ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- At this page you can desire how you want to be alerted by the program when you
- receive a call. Also wich program can force FAM/2 to release the comport.
-
- When receiving a call
-
- You can choose if the FAM/2 window will be activated when you receive a call.
- So you don't have to search for the statuswindow.
-
- Ring trough the PC-speaker: When you receive a call your pc speaker will ring
- every time the phone rings.
-
- When you are boured of the pc speakers signal, you can say FAM/2 to play a
- soundfile in RVD-, ZVD-, WAV- or VOC- format every time a ring is detected.
-
- After receiving a call
-
- Visual it is best to let FAM/2 switch the lights of your terminal on and off.
- Otherwise you can also let FAM/2 play a tune after a call is received.
-
- You can set a value for the interval the soundfile must be played after
- receiving a call.
-
- Release comport
-
- You can force FAM/2 to relase the comport when another communicationprogram
- starts. You can assign an PM object or the name of the executable program.
- FAM/2 looks if the program wil be active in the tasklist and when it does it
- will release the comport. When you quit the other program, FAM/2 will try to
- reopen the comport.
-
- You can name the icon name of the program or the name of the program itself.
- Only a few letters are enough. So when you would release the comport if
- Faxworks is started, only the letters FAXW will be enough for FAM/2 to know it
- should release the comport.
-
- All ... ms you can fill in the time that FAM/2 polls the tasklist if the
- program you started is still active. Normally a value of 200 will be good
- enough. When you discover problems that FAM/2 does not release the comport
- properly, you can decrease this value.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12. Program ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- You can activate on this tab settings that will activate some features.
-
- Show current time
-
- Activates the current time in the statuswindow.
-
- Confirm deletion
-
- Activates or de-activates the confirmation when you delete data files as there
- are received messages, fax files and voice messages.
-
- Activate Logfile
-
- When you choose this option every status window action of FAM/2 will be written
- to the logfile. You can view and edit the logfile (FAM.LOG) with any
- texteditor. E.exe is not an texteditor, its only shit. When FAM/2 is running,
- you can't open the Logfile with e.exe, because e.exe tries to open the Logfile
- in WRITE and read-mode, and FAM/2 denies writing to the Logfile by other
- programms, while FAM/2 is running. Try the EPM or any other texteditor. Also
- you can view it with the integrated FAM/2 logfile viewer.
-
- Activate the NUM-LOCK at start
-
- IBM has the opinion that most of the OS/2 users use their nummeric pad as a
- second cursorblock, so you can activate the NUM-LOCK at start with this option
- and when you place FAM/2 in your startupfolder, everytime you start OS/2 you
- will have the numock activated.
-
- "Listen on the line"
-
- You must connect another handset parallel to the modem line. Then this option
- is useful when you take up the phone in another room as were your computer is
- lcated. When you take a call before FAM/2 does, FAM/2 picks up the call evenso
- and notice that if there is a modem or faxtune. When FAM/2 doesn't hear such a
- tune it will hang up within 10 seconds.
-
- Start hide
-
- You won't see the FAM/2 status window when you start the program. You can
- activate the statuswindow when you select FAM/2 in your tasklist.
-
- Use HPFS-Filenames
-
- On FAT partitions you can use only file names of 8 characters and three
- extension characters. When choosing this option, FAM/2 writes down the date,
- time, and seconds of a received call, and also you can name your greeting- and
- other voice messages 256 charaters long.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 13. Register ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- FAM/2 is Shareware. When you use FAM/2 longer as 30 days you must register. You
- will become a register-key and a serial number. This you must insert at this
- spot. You will have more options available when registered. See for more
- information: Register.txt
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 14. Dialogbox Edit Voice ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- The next voice functions are available in this dialg box:
-
- Playback
-
- Double click on the voice file or select this button you will hear the voice
- file playback on the device you have setup earlier in the Settings Notebook.
-
- Playback to

- format of the target file.
-
- Sorry for all Elsa Mircolink 28.8 TQV-Users
-
- I did not manage to convert the Rockwell-Voice Data in a format wich MMPM/2
- will understand. So at this moment you can not soundfiles of the WAV- or VOC
- format to playback on the modem (*.RVD) I will keep on working on it but would
- not wait any longer to release the program, so ZyXEl users can use it and
- others can look what the program can do for them in the future!

- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 22. Data recognition ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- On this page you make the settings and set the parameters for the data
- recognition :
-
- Data recognition active
-
- You don't need to use the data recognition. You can toggle it on and off. When
- toggle off the next points are relevant.
-
- Do Connect
-
- When you want FAM/2 to send "Connect" to the modem, you check this option. This
- is usefull for BBS-programs. Otherwise a program will be activated without
- connect.
-
- First message
-
- This is how data recognition works: When you receive a call first the modem
- sends a greeting, after that it will listen if there is somebody who talks.
- When there is nothing to hear, the modem assumes that there will send data to
- it and switches to datarecognition.
-
- Here you setup a first greeting. It is best to make a short message, so that
- the caller will speak a short message back. For example: "Hello" or your name
-
- When you don't setup a messagegreeting here, the call will be treated as usual,
- as is without "Hello" Data will be recognised only when a calling modem sends a
- beep. When the calling modem does not send a beep and your modem recognises
- silence during the recording, FAM/2 tries to make data connection.
-
- Silence recognition
-
- This option will only work if you have setup a greeting message. When you have,
- you can give a value here so that FAM/2 uses silence recognition for the time
- you set.
-
- Executable programs
-
- In case of a data call you can assign a program what will be started by FAM/2.
- When you don't assign a program FAM/2 will end with an ERRORLEVEL 10 when a
- data call has been recognised. The program will be executed with the parameters
- wich you setup at this point. The next words are reserved and can used as
- parameters:
-
- $COMHANDLE With this keyword you can give the comport handle to the executable
- program. With OS/2 the only legal possibility to give another program access to
- the comport is to start another program as child process and give access to the
- comport. Therefore $COMHANDLE is the most important parameter.
-
- $DTE With this parameter you can tell the speed to the other program. This is
- the speed wich the computer and modem use to each other.
-
- $CONNECT This keyword is used to let the executed program know wich speed the
- modems use with eachother. >> Wenn Sie die Connectmeldung dahingehend
- modifiziert haben, das sie beispielsweise die DTE-Geschwindigkeit anzeigt (z.B.
- with ATX5), enthalt diese Variable nicht den korrekten Wert! ???
-
- With the checkbox "Release comport" you can tell FAM/2 to release the comport
- before launching the program. Think of this: when you close the comport the DTR
- will be setted to LOW and the modem hangsup in normal setting. When you have to

-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 24. Start Binkley ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- I am not a Binkley expert. I only use it as a Point and use it only to call my
- BOSS when I want to send crashmails. What you read here is only how I think
- about it. May be there is a better solution!?
-
- You have to play a bit tricky when starting Binkley from FAM/2. Binkley AFAIK
- does not support as by Maximus simple give the comport away Also SHARE does not
- work. So you must release the comport before using Binkley
-
- But now the comport driver sets the DTR to Low when the comport has been
- closed. That is logical and right but normaly the modem hangs up now. To avoid
- this you need the initial string "AT&D0" Wich will prevent the modem to hang
- up.
-
- You solved the first problem now while Binkley uses DTR to drop down the modem.
- So you have to re enter this code to start Binkley with an init string.
-
- So you managed to start Binkley and it has access to the comport. Now Binkley
- should take over the call. May be it will be the best to disable the option
- "Send Connect". Now you can give Binkley the ATA command so Binkley tries to
- make a connect after it has been started. Because Binkley don't gets a RING
- anymore this can be a possibility.
-
- Now you can make a connect statement for both modems. And Binkley will act as
- normal. But how acts Binkley after the data connection?
-
- When somebody sends a mail pack then it would not give any problems. Binkley
- can be closed with a normal errorlevel. When a Online-User ist es aucha
- leichtes, am Ende der BBSSpawn.cmd ein EXIT zu setzen. Was aber, wenn keine
- Verbindung zustande kommt (NO CARRIER). Dann wartet Binkley geduldig auf den
- nachsten Anruf.
- ExitBaud.cmd of Binkley so aussehen:
-
- FAM Handle=%3 Once
-
- Upper and lower case is not important also the sequence is all the same.
-
- When you leave the field "Executable progam" blank closes FAM/2 with the
- ERRORLEVEL 10, when data connection is recognised you can react wit your
- ExitBaud.CMD and give the control back to Binkley.
