  3. INTRODUCTION
  4.  
  5.   X·it (pronounced "exit") provides a one button click to many desktop
  6.   operations, such as closing a window or displaying a task list. When first
  7.   loaded, it adds a 'Close' button (an 'X') on the left side of all titlebars
  8.   and a 'LaunchPad', 'Task List' and 'Rollup' button on the right side. Pressing
  9.   the close button does the same action as pressing Alt-F4, or selecting the
  10.   'Close' option in the system menu. All operations can also be assigned to the
  11.   middle or right mouse buttons, or to keys.
  12.  
  13.   Buttons are completely configurable: display on left or right side, and assign
  14.   any action to them. There are more than 30 available actions such as close,
  15.   open parent, copy, paste, rollup and user defined (assign any OS/2 or DOS
  16.   command to a button). The button bitmaps can also be modified.

  18. UPDATE WARNING + UN-INSTALL
  19.  
  20.   If you currently have an earlier version of X·it running, you MUST follow
  21.   these steps before installing X·it:
  22.  
  23.       1) Remove X·it from your startup folder or startup.cmd file.
  24.       2) Reboot - this is usually the only way to unload X·it's .dll file
  25.       3) You can now remove/backup the old X·it files. But keep XIT.INI, or
  26.          copy it to the directory where you install this new version.
  27.       4) Proceed with the install

  47.   Copy the first six files to any directory on a local drive. Insure this
  48.   directory is in the LIBPATH statement in CONFIG.SYS or that the current
  49.   directory is indicated (LIBPATH=.). It's a good idea to place a shadow of the
  50.   program in the startup folder. X·it is now ready to run - no need to reboot.
  51.   X·it does not modify CONFIG.SYS. If you wish to edit the default button
  52.   bitmaps, you can unzip the bitmaps.zip file and use the OS/2 ICONEDIT.EXE
  53.   program to edit them. See the online help for more info (press F1). If you are
  54.   happy with the default bitmaps, you can delete the bitmaps.zip file (the
  55.   default bitmaps are stored in xitbmp.dll and xitbmp1.dll).

  57. USING X·IT
  58.  
  59.   When X·it is loaded, it defaults to visible and enabled. You can change the
  60.   options by pressing the 'Options' button on the main X·it window.

  62.   To override the option settings, use these startup options:
  63.  
  64.                 /NM     - don't minimize/hide on startup
  65.                 /S      - suspend X·it on startup
  66.                 /Q      - quiet mode - disable hot key sounds
  67.                 /W      - disable warning/info messages
  68.  
  69.   To toggle X·its state, press the Enable/Suspend button. To exit X·it, press
  70.   the Terminate button. Read the online help for more info (press F1 anywhere).

  72.   Warning: If you set both 'Hide' and 'Remove from task list' options, you will
  73.   not be able to access the X·it window from the task list. If this happens,
  74.   press the right mouse button over any X·it titlebar button, then select 'Show'.

  78.   X·it is shareware and costs $25. The first time X·it is loaded, a registration
  79.   dialog is shown. For the remainder of the trial period, you can use X·it
  80.   fully - it is not crippled in any way. After the trial period, you must
  81.   register it if you decide to keep it. Check to online help for full
  82.   registration info.

  84.   For quick registration, read the ORDER.FRM file. Or press Help from the main
  85.   X·it window, and double click on the registration hot link. Read the
  86.   instructions, then print out the BMT order form (USA), or the CodeSmith order

  88.   registration code as soon as possible, and include your regular mailing

  117. PROBLEMS
  118.  
  119.   If X·it does not work correctly with an application, you can prevent X·it from
  120.   hooking into the PM application by using the exception list (under X·it
  121.   options). When entering the filename, you need only enter the base name (root
  122.   and extension), without the path. For example, the file C:\SUBDIR\CRASH.EXE
  123.   would be entered as 'CRASH.EXE' in the list. Be sure to use UPPERCASE.

  125.   Do not use X·it with WPFldExt, a freeware DLL that extends the folder object
  126.   under OS/2 2.0. Conflicts might include slowdowns and hangs.
