- INTRODUCTION
-
- X·it (pronounced "exit") provides a one button click to many desktop
- operations, such as closing a window or displaying a task list. When first
- loaded, it adds a 'Close' button (an 'X') on the left side of all titlebars
- and a 'LaunchPad', 'Task List' and 'Rollup' button on the right side. Pressing
- the close button does the same action as pressing Alt-F4, or selecting the
- 'Close' option in the system menu. All operations can also be assigned to the
- middle or right mouse buttons, or to keys.
-
- Buttons are completely configurable: display on left or right side, and assign
- any action to them. There are more than 30 available actions such as close,
- open parent, copy, paste, rollup and user defined (assign any OS/2 or DOS
- command to a button). The button bitmaps can also be modified.
-
- UPDATE WARNING + UN-INSTALL
-
- If you currently have an earlier version of X·it running, you MUST follow
- these steps before installing X·it:
-
- 1) Remove X·it from your startup folder or startup.cmd file.
- 2) Reboot - this is usually the only way to unload X·it's .dll file
- 3) You can now remove/backup the old X·it files. But keep XIT.INI, or
- copy it to the directory where you install this new version.
- 4) Proceed with the install
-
- INSTALLATION

- XITBMP1.DLL - button bitmaps (above 800x600 resolution)
- XIT.HLP - help file
- ORDER.FRM - order forms (see online help for Canadian form)

- FILE_ID.DIZ - id file for BBSs

- README.XIT - this file
-
- Copy the first six files to any directory on a local drive. Insure this
- directory is in the LIBPATH statement in CONFIG.SYS or that the current
- directory is indicated (LIBPATH=.). It's a good idea to place a shadow of the
- program in the startup folder. X·it is now ready to run - no need to reboot.
- X·it does not modify CONFIG.SYS. If you wish to edit the default button
- bitmaps, you can unzip the bitmaps.zip file and use the OS/2 ICONEDIT.EXE
- program to edit them. See the online help for more info (press F1). If you are
- happy with the default bitmaps, you can delete the bitmaps.zip file (the
- default bitmaps are stored in xitbmp.dll and xitbmp1.dll).
-
- USING X·IT
-
- When X·it is loaded, it defaults to visible and enabled. You can change the
- options by pressing the 'Options' button on the main X·it window.
-
- To override the option settings, use these startup options:
-
- /NM - don't minimize/hide on startup
- /S - suspend X·it on startup
- /Q - quiet mode - disable hot key sounds
- /W - disable warning/info messages
-
- To toggle X·its state, press the Enable/Suspend button. To exit X·it, press
- the Terminate button. Read the online help for more info (press F1 anywhere).
-
- Warning: If you set both 'Hide' and 'Remove from task list' options, you will
- not be able to access the X·it window from the task list. If this happens,
- press the right mouse button over any X·it titlebar button, then select 'Show'.
-

- PROBLEMS
-
- If X·it does not work correctly with an application, you can prevent X·it from
- hooking into the PM application by using the exception list (under X·it
- options). When entering the filename, you need only enter the base name (root
- and extension), without the path. For example, the file C:\SUBDIR\CRASH.EXE
- would be entered as 'CRASH.EXE' in the list. Be sure to use UPPERCASE.
-
- Do not use X·it with WPFldExt, a freeware DLL that extends the folder object
- under OS/2 2.0. Conflicts might include slowdowns and hangs.
-
- Users will always comes across new bugs. Please let us know of any
- problems via email by placing "Xit bug" in the subject and send to:
