-
-
- -/- Setup and Installation
-
-
- 1. Create a directory to store all WAR files.
-
- 2. UnZip WAR_100.ZIP into the new directory. WAR is
- packaged with an AV check provided by PkWare Inc. If while
- unzipping the archive, if you find that your copy does
- not have the symbol "-AV" beside each file, the archive
- has been modified, and is not the origional archive as released
- by Minds Edge Productions Inc.
-
- 3. Change to the directory, and run the program SETUP.EXE using WAR.CFG
- as the default command line :
-
- SETUP WAR.CFG
-
- If you run a multi-line system with different lines having different
- locked baud rates, you may wish to create a new *.CFG file for each
- different line setup.
-
- 4. Select option #1 - Create/Modify WAR.CFG and enter the information.
- Should you require a batch file to be created, selection option #2.
-
- 5. If you selected option #2, a batch file RUN-WAR.BAT will be created.
- This batch file can be used on _most_ BBS systems to load up WAR.
- You may have to edit the batch file slightly to make it work on your
- configuration.
-
- 6. Set up your BBS software to call RUN-WAR.BAT with a drop file
- of either DORINFO1.DEF or DOOR.SYS. WAR will read either one
- according to the information supplied previously.
-
- The format of the *.CFG file (you specify what file) is a regular ASCII
- text file that can be edited using any ASCII text editor. The format
- of the file is as follows :
-
- 1st Line : Sysop's Full Name
- 2nd Line : BBS Name
- 3rd Line : Locked baud rate [0 if COM port not locked]
- 4th Line : BBS Type : 1 - DORINFO1.DEF
- : 2 - DOOR.SYS
- 5th Line : Path to DORINFO1.DEF or DOOR.SYS
-
- This can be edited with any text editor. When comparing registration
- codes, WAR retrieves the sysop name and BBS name from this file. Take
- care when filling out your registration forms to provide the same sysop
- and BBS name as edited in *.CFG.
-
- -/- Loading WAR
-
-
- WAR accepts and requires only one parameter : the configuration file.
- Most single-line system will want to create WAR.CFG (see SETUP &
- INSTALLATION above), and will run WAR as follows :
-
- WAR WAR.CFG
-
- While in the door, the following keys are available to the sysop :
-
- Alt-C : Invoke split-screen chat mode. Press ESC to exit.
- Alt-H : Hang up the phone.
- Alt-X : Exit game immediately (use with caution).
- Up : Increases user's time by two minutes.
- Down : Decreases user's time by two minutes.
- F1..F4 : Various different status bars
-
-
- -/- Multiline Support
-
-
- WAR can be run on multiline systems with users on different lines able
- to access different games at the same time. Individual games can only
- be access by one person at a time. WAR provides its own safeguards
- against illegal access by creating semaphor files : <gamename>.$$$.
- These are automatically deleted if the user hangs up, runs out of time
- while in a game, or exits an individual game. Remember, two users can
- be playing WAR at the same time as long as they are not playing the
- same individual game.
-
-
- -/- Reseting the Game
-
- If you have the need to reset the game you will have to delete some
- files. To delete all the active games, delete the file GAME.DAT. To
- delete all the active users in the game, delete USERS.DAT. If you
- delete the USERS.DAT file you will also want to delete the GAME.DAT
- file. Otherwise there may be "phantom" games in existance, that
- nobody can play. Currently there is no way to delete scenerios,
- unless you want to delete them all. In which case you can delete
- the SCENERIO.DAT file. This file will be recreated the next time
- you start war with the two default scenerios.
-
-
- -/- Maintenance
-
-
- Most maintenance is done by WAR internally. However, an external program
- called MAINT.EXE should be run once per day to 'clean up' the games.
- This program will delete neglected and completed games every 4 and 3
- days respectively. If you find any semaphor files labelled *.$$$ that
- are older than 2 hours, delete them. MAINT.EXE should do this
- automatically every night.
-
-
- -/- Scenario Compiler
-
-
- WAR features a powerful tool in building exciting game modules. Included
- in the original package are the following scenarios :
-
- 1. 21st Century North America
- 2. WAR! in Vancouver, Canada
- 3. The Modern World
- 4. Island Wars
-
- The first two are built into WAR. The third is provided as
- WORLD.TXT, in an ASCII text file format to illustrate the Scenario
- Compiler. The fourth one is included in a seperate archive. In
- order to make the third scenario available to your users, run WAR.EXE
- (it will create SCENARIO.DAT automatically), and exit. Then run
- COMPILE.EXE and compile the ASCII text file WORLD.TXT.
-
- Making scenarios is very easy and takes relatively little time to do.
- Please refer to COMPILE.DOC for more information.
-
-
- -/- Bugs & Suggestions
-
-
- If you come across a bug in the program, please record all the details
- possible (ie, runtime error #, address location, screen captures if
- possible, configuration files, etc...) and send them to :
-
- Internet e-mail: dloy@mep.com
- Fidonet netmail: DION LOY at 1:153/709
-
- Please note that the author's board, Myth Drannor BBS, is closing down.
- You may receive the latest version of WAR or any other Minds Edge
- Productions Inc. product at the support boards listed in CATALOG.TXT.
-
- A large majority of our online games have been developed with suggestions
- from its users. If you have any suggestions or comments about our
- programs, we are always willing and eager to listen to them.
-
-
- -/- Registration
-
-
- If WAR is being used extensively on your system, please take the
- time and effort to register it. Registering online games has a
- large affect on future versions and updates. Being a sysop myself,
- I realize that the majority of sysops do not have the funds to
- register outrageously priced doors. We believe that the price of
- $15.00 for WAR is VERY reasonable in a time when most quality doors
- run between $20.00 to $35.00. This is coupled with the fact that
- once you register WAR, ALL future updates and versions are FREE.
-
- Unregistered copies of WAR let the user join a maximum of 2 games.
- Sysops that register WAR will receive an activation code that will
- enable their users to participate in up to 10 different games.
-
- To register, fill out and print REGISTER.DOC and mail it with a
- cheque/money order for $15.00 Canadian (British Columbia residents
- add 7% sales tax; $15.00 American if you are residing outside of
- Canada). The address and further information is located in
- REGISTER.DOC.
