- Welcome to the pre-release of NewsFlash! (tentative name). I hope you
- enjoy this program and find it to be useful. As this is the first release,
- there is a good possibilty of bugs and other problems. If you find any,
- mail me at kensh@well.com. To install, just unzip the download file
- to a directory (you probably already did this) and run
- "NEWSFLSH.exe". You must also run the WINTDIST.EXE file to install
- certain Internet drivers, unless you have already installed a version
- of Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0, which includes the internet libraries.
- Note that the name "NewsFlash!" may not end up being the
- actual product name. I have several name ideas in mind right now but I want
- to hear what you people think. Send your product name idea (should be
- catchy, short and marketable) to kensh@well.com.
-
-
- Program Requirements:
- Pentium or similar, Window 95, 16Meg RAM, 28.8K Modem recommended.
- Minimum supported resolution 640x480 256 colors, minimum recommended
- resolution 800x600 256 colors or better.
-
-
- Once NewsFlash is running, it will attempt to connect to the internet.
- If you have your Win95 Autodial settings, you will be prompted to
- connect to your ISP. If you are on a LAN or already have an active
- TCP/IP connection, NewsFlash will start up with quotes, news headlines
- and weather.
-
- You can double-click on anything to activate your internet browser
- with a link to that item. NewsFlash comes with Netscape set up
- as the default browser, but you can change that if you like (to
- Microsoft's Internet Explorer, for example) in the Preferences
- dialog box.
-
- You can single-click and move the mouse left and right to drag
- a pane. The pane at the bottom (or in the middle for the "wide"
- window style" is the ad pane. You can't drag or move this pane.
-
- Right-click with the mouse to bring up the NewsFlash menu.
-
- You should use the Preferences dialog box to customize the program.
- Right now very few things are actually customizable. You can set the
- speed of the scrolling panes, and some other internal variables, but
- you can't change the news headline groups or the local news feed.
- As of this release, you CAN change the stock ticker using the
- Preferences dialog box, as well as the weather cities and other stuff.
- All of the other preferences stuff will be working by the next release.
- If you see something that ought to be user-adjustable and isn't covered
- in the Preferences dialog box than please send me email.
-
-
- If you have a POP3 compatible mail account, you can have NewsFlash
- scan for your incoming mail. You need to fill in the appropriate
- information in the Preferences dialog box. Also, NewsFlash will use the
- path to your preferred email client program (e.g. WEUDORA.EXE if
- you are using Eudora Lite) when you double-click on a mail header
- in the scrolling pane. If this is confusing, email me and tell me
- why at kensh@well.com.
-
-
- Sounds! This archive doesn't include the .WAV files used by the program.
- So, you won't hear any sound effects, not that there is anything all that
- cool, just occasional voice announcements and a "swoosh" effect when
- you drag a pane with the mouse. If you want them, you should be able
- to download another file called "ijrsrc.zip". This file contains the
- .WAV resources used by NewsFlash. To use them, unzip them to a
- subdirectory of your NewsFlash program directory called "Resources".
- You will need to create this directory first (the DOS command "mkdir
- resources" works fine). Problems? Email me at, you guessed it,
- kensh@well.com.
-
- If you are running through a Proxy/Firewall server, you may not be
- able to run this program (or many others) without special external
- software. You can get it at http://www.socks.nec.com/download.html.
- Get SocksCap32.
-
-
- That about covers it, I hope. Thanks, ken, CTO NewsFlash Software
