  12.          This document describes  briefly what  is FLIBBS, and explains how
  13.          to install and run it (you should read this before anything else). 
  14.          
  15.          It also tells you how to print the documentation, where to get the
  16.          latest version, and how to contact the author.  A brief section on
  17.          future versions terminates the document.

  21.          1 What is FLIBBS

  24.          The  File  LIst for BBS  or FLIBBS  (pronouce  FLIB'S) program  is
  25.          intended for those  who are interested by the huge amount of files
  26.          available on  any decent BBS, but are fed up of having  either  to
  27.          spend  a lot  of money  in  on-line researchs  and queries, or  to
  28.          manipulate mega  bytes  of  badly standardized  and  difficult  to
  29.          handle ASCII  BBS  "All files"  lists. If  you are  one  of  these
  30.          unfortunates  guys, as  I used to be, you have  already understood
  31.          what FLIBBS is all about:

  34.           │ FLIBBS imports the  data contained in more or less  standard │ 
  35.           │ ASCII BBS file list, put it into a well structured data base │ 
  36.           │ called a  FLIBBS Data Set, and allows  you to manipulate and │ 
  37.           │ analyse  this information  in  ways you  had  never  dreamed │ 
  38.           │ before.                                                      │

  43.          2 FLIBBS is Shareware
  44.          ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

  46.          FLIBBS  is  SHAREWARE, user  supported  software. FLIBBS  is  made
  47.          available for a free 45 day trial period. If  you find the program
  48.          of use  and wish to continue using it, you are obliged to purchase
  49.          a personal license, that is to register this program.

  51.          To learn how  to register this program (and to see what incentives
  52.          are available to  registered users) see  the file REGISTER.DOC. It
  53.          also contains a registration form for you to send in. To print the
  54.          registration form, make sure  your printer is on  and ready,  then
  55.          type

  62.          3 Installation

  65.          To install FLIBBS, follow the following [conditional] steps: 
  66.          
  67.             ■ If you already own a registered version of FLIBBS: 
  68.          
  69.                  - make a backup copy of your FLIBBS.EXE file in some other
  70.                    directory 
  71.          
  72.                  - after  successful  installation of  the  new version  in
  73.                    accordance with  the  instructions  that follow, consult
  74.                    the  file REGISTER.DOC  to see how you  can  immediately
  75.                    register your new version of FLIBBS 
  76.          
  77.             ■ If  you have a previous version of  FLIBBS installed  in some
  78.               directory: 
  79.          
  80.                  - copy the FLIBBS distribution file into that directory 
  81.          
  82.                  - uncompress   the   distribution  file   OVERWRITING  all
  83.                    existing files 
  84.          
  85.                  - run  the  utility  program  FLCV1011.EXE  before   doing
  86.                    anything else. 
  87.          
  88.             ■ If you do not have a previous version of FLIBBS installed: 
  89.          
  90.                  - create any directory 
  91.          
  92.                  - copy and  uncompress the FLIBBS  distribution  file into
  93.                    it. 
  94.          
  95.             ■ You may  then  run FLIBBS from  anywhere you  like  (put  the
  96.               FLIBBS  directory in your path if you  wish), FLIBBS will put
  97.               all its own  informations, files  and data into the directory
  98.               where the FLIBBS.EXE file is located (the directory where you
  99.               have uncompressed the distribution file).

  101.          IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR SYSOP: 
  102.          
  103.               If you are using the MKFLIBBS program and are  upgrading from
  104.               FLIBBS  version v1.0,  you must  change some  details  in the
  105.               batch  file  that   produces  your  FLIBBS  Data   Set   (see
  106.               MKFLIBBS.DOC for more on this).

  110.          4 Running FLIBBS
  111.          ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

  113.          Your run FLIBBS by typing the command  "FLIBBS"  at the DOS prompt
  114.          while  in the FLIBBS  directory, unless you have added the  FLIBBS
  115.          directory in your path, in which case you may call FLIBBS from any
  116.          directory you are in.

  118.          To learn how to use FLIBBS, you may: 
  119.          
  120.             ■ Press the <F1> key while you are in the program, and navigate
  121.               through the help system to find the information you need 
  122.

  124.             ■ Print the documentation, and read it 
  125.          
  126.             ■ Print the documentation, and carry out the exercice described
  127.               in the section "Getting Started and Overview". It should give
  128.               you  in little time quite a good  understanding on how to use
  129.               FLIBBS

  136.          You may print the FLIBBS documentation by switching  your  printer
  137.          on, and typing the following command at the dos prompt:

  143.          6 How to get the latest version

  146.          The  latest  version  of FLIBBS can be  file  requested from  node
  147.          2:291/754 under the magic name "FLIBBS".

  149.          It   is   available  on  the   BBS   "Always  Thinking   Confetti"
  150.          (32-2-3809423).

  152.          At the time you are  reading this  document, the latest version of
  153.          FLIBBS should also be available on Compuserve,  on the PC Bulletin
  154.          Forum (type "GO PCBBS").

  178.          ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

  180.          Future  versions of  FLIBBS will aim at adapting  the  software to
  181.          user's remarks and requirements. 
  182.          
  183.          Future version could include additionnal functions, like searching
  184.          for a string in several FLIBBS Data Set at once.

  187.          Future version could also be dedicated to automazing the update of
  188.          one of your  FLIBBS Data Set with the monthly  file  of  your  BBS
  189.          Sysop. FLIBBS could detect the new  dowloaded file,  move and open
  190.          it, and automatically update the main FLIBBS Data Set. This  means
  191.          you could freq your BBS for  the latest FLIBBS  Data  Set upgrade,
  192.          and  then   update  your   FLIBBS  Data  Set,  all   at  once  and
  193.          automatically using a batch file. 
  194.          
  195.          Improvements  could also be  included in  the services  offered to
  196.          Sysops.  MKFLIBBS could for example remove  the PCB codes that are
  197.          included in many ALLFILES.TXT files.
