  120. Installation
  121. --------------
  122.  
  123. To install the Eudora, EudoraWeb, and Conduit for Eudora Internet
  124. Suite applications (if you haven't already):
  125.  
  126. 1a. Windows Downloaded installer - After downloading the installer
  127. simply run it and follow the instructions. You may choose which 
  128. components to install. The PalmOS applications will automatically
  129. be set up for install on your next Hotsync.
  130.  
  131. 1b. Macintosh Downloaded Installer - Open the .sit file. Select each
  132. of the .prc files you wish to install as you would install any
  133. .prc file. There is no conduit software for the Macintosh.
  134.  
  135. 1c. Windows CDROM -- If the installer did not work automatically when
  136. you inserted the CD or you downloaded it from the Internet, click on
  137. the file 2.0b10.exe and follow the screen instructions.  Note that
  138. the conduit installation is optional.
  139.  
  140. 1d. Macintosh CDROM -- If the installer did not work automatically when
  141. you inserted the CD or you downloaded it from the Internet, click on
  142. the installer and follow the screen instructions.

  145. 2. From your Palm device, run a HotSync operation.  The Eudora and
  146. EudoraWeb applications will transfer from your desktop computer to
  147. your Palm device.

  151. Installation Issues
  152. --------------------

  154. - If you are a Windows Eudora user an item for configuring Eudora
  155.   Hotsync will show up in your tool bar, but you may have to restart
  156.   Windows Eudora for this to occur.

  160. Eudora 2.0 Features

  162. - Supports Internet-standard POP3 and SMTP to receive and 
  163.   send messages.

  204. Eudora Issues
  205. ---------------
  206. - Default domain setting affect the envelope, not the headers.
  207.   Mail will be sent to the correct address, but the To:/Cc: field
  208.   will not show correctly.
  209.  
  210. - Send failures may not be indicated in mail check/send result
  211.   report. They will be noted in the Out mailbox though.
  212.  
  213. - When composing messages with long addresses, the address is
  214.   not displayed well. Tap on To: or Cc: to see full addresses.
  215.  
  216. - Some text entry hacks don't work with message composition.
  217.  
  218. - Up/Down buttons don't work in add to addresses screen.
  219.  
  220. - Filter changes unrelated to downloading cause refiltering of
  221.   all messages on server.
  222.  
  223. - Delete messages on server when fully retrieved deletes after a
  224.   mail check or two. It could delete sooner.
  225.  
  226. - If you configure filters in 2.0 and then switch back to 1.1
  227.   none of the filters configured in 2.0 will be recognized. Basically
  228.   there is forward, but not backward filter compatibility.
  229.  
  230. - Message received via beaming are not displayed in the In mailbox
  231.   right away. You have to go to message view and back or such
  232.   to get it to update.

  236. EudoraWeb 2.0 Features
  237. -------------------------
  238.  
  239. Supports a subset of HTML 3.2 features.  
  240.  
  241. Includes the following text mark-up capabilities:
  242.  
  243. - Text is shown in two different sizes: bold 
  244.   and regular forms of each, and underlining.
  245.  
  246. - Displays hyperlinks with a dotted underline.
  247.  
  248. - Draws italic text with a dashed underline.
  249.  
  250. - Does not support fixed-width text.
  251.  
  252. - Does not display images.
  253.  
  254. - Displays alternative text, when provided.
  255.  
  256. - Frames are not fully supported, but 
  257.   you can view one frame at a time.
  258.  
  259. - Supports HTML forms, with the exception 
  260.   of the TYPE=FILE INPUT field (TYPE=IMAGE acts 
  261.   as a submit button).  Multiple-choice SELECT fields 
  262.   are represented as separator checkboxes.
  263.  
  264. - Supports character entities and numeric references 
  265.   for the entire PalmOS character set, including Unicode
  266.   numeric references for non-ISO8859 characters 
  267.   (e.g.: • = • = bullet character).
  268.  
  269. - Does not support tables, scripts, and style sheets.
  270.  
  271. - Supports some miscellaneous browser features including: 
  272.   HTTP basic authentication, cookies, redirection, 
  273.   and refresh (timed refresh not supported).

  277. - "mailto:..." URLs will launch Eudora.

  280. ------------
  281. Cache size
  282. ------------
  283.  
  284. Copies of EudoraWeb pages are kept locally in order to speed
  285. operation.  By default, up to 300K of the device's memory is used for
  286. this cache. However, you can limit the amount of storage used by the
  287. cache by entering a different value in the application's preferences
  288. dialog box. Just choose PREFERENCES from the OPTIONS menu.
  289.  
  290.  
  291. ------------------
  292. EudoraWeb Issues
  293. ------------------
  294.  
  295. - You cannot enter text into a form field until the document has
  296.   finished loading.
  297.  
  298. - If you tap to get a menu before a page is loaded from cache
  299.   the browser will be stuck. You have to leave and reenter 
  300.   the browser to get back.
  301.  
  302. - Named anchors without any text between the destination
  303.   anchor tags will not work. [<A NAME="dest"></A>].  Often
  304.   used to link within a page.
  305.  
  306. - Color support is incomplete; no support for color tags
  307.   in the <body> tag such as link and background color.
  308.  
  309. ------------------------------------------------------
  310. Using Infrared With Eudora Internet Suite Applications
  311. ------------------------------------------------------
  312.  
  313. If you are using PalmOS(TM) older than version 3.3, you will have
  314. trouble using Eudora Internet Suite with TCP/IP connections over
  315. Infrared (IR).  We recommend that you upgrade to Palm OS(TM) 3.3 that
  316. fixes this issue. Palm OS 3.3 is available from Palm Computing's web
  317. site at http://www.palm.com/support/downloads
  318.  
  319. There is a known problem with PalmOS(TM) 3.1 such that receiving
  320. an application via an IR beam when the launcher is running
  321. will cause any existing databases associated with the
  322. application on the receiving device to be deleted.  Thus
  323. if you are running PalmOS(TM) 3.1 and are receiving Eudora or
  324. EudoraWeb be sure the launcher is not active.
  325.  
  326. --------------------------------
  327. Eudora Mail Conduit Features
  328. --------------------------------
  329. - Synchronizes Eudora on Palm Computing platform with desktop 
  330.   mailers such as Windows Eudora(R) and Outlook.
  331.  
  332. - Supports all features of Eudora for the Palm Computing platform.
  333.  
  334. - Filters synchronized messages.
  335.  
  336. - Controls the number of messages, and the size of each message 
  337.   synchronized. This allows you to sync small number of 
  338.   messages to your Palm even if you have hundreds in your
  339.   In mailbox on your desktop.
  340.  
  341. - Sends outgoing mail via desktop mailers.
  342.  
  343. - Provides full and efficient backup and auto-restore of download 
  344.   via POP3 server. 
  345.  
  346.  
  347. Note that we do not yet support the following:
  348.  
  349. - Syncing for Macintosh Eudora. This is a planned feature.
  350.  
  351. - Syncing the Eudora address book with the Palm address book. This
  352.   is also a planned feature.
  353.  
  354. - Syncing mailboxes other than than In, which is also a planned feature.
  355.  
  356.  
  357.  
  358. ---------------
  359. Modes Supported
  360. ---------------
  361. Two modes are supported:
  362.       
  363. *  Backup mode -- In this mode messages in Eudora on your Palm
  364.    organizer that you retrieved directly from the server are 
  365.    backed up on your PC. If all data on your Palm organizer is 
  366.    erased (e.g., the batteries are left out) your messages will 
  367.    automatically be restored on the next Hotsync(R) operation. 
  368.    This mode is recommended if you retrieve your mail directly 
  369.    from the server via a modem over the network. You can also 
  370.    force a restore.
  371.  
  372. *  Desktop client sync mode -- In this mode messages are synchronized
  373.    between Eudora on your Palm organizer and your desktop mail 
  374.    client (e.g., Windows Eudora (R) or Outlook). This is an alternate
  375.    way to get new messages onto your Palm organizer. Mail that you compose 
  376.    on your Palm organizer is also sent via your desktop mail client. 
  377.    See below for a list of desktop mail clients that work with 
  378.    the Eudora mail conduit.
  379.  
  380. You can also disable the conduit without uninstalling it by
  381. selecting the "do nothing" mode. See the full Eudora and conduit
  382. documentation in the Eudora Internet Suite User Guide for greater detail.
  383.  
  384.  
  385. -------------------------------
  386. General Eudora Mail Issues
  387. ------------------------------
  388.  
  389. - If you've recently changed the date on your Palm device and you've
  390.   had the Eudora Mail Conduit configured to "do nothing" you may have
  391.   trouble getting it to switch out of "do nothing". To remedy this,
  392.   first change the Hotsync configuration in Eudora on your Palm to
  393.   "Synch with...", then also and before Hotsyncing, change your
  394.   configuration on your desktop. Note that you should do this from
  395.   the "Custom" menu found when clicking on the Hotsync manager 
  396.   in the system tray.
  397.  
  398. - With Windows Eudora the tool bar icon to access the conduit 
  399.   configuration may not show up. Restarting Eudora may help. 
  400.   The conduit configuration is always available from the Palm
  401.   Hotsync manager found in the Windows System tray.
  402.  
  403. - Sending a message with a comma in the full name part of the 
  404.   address will fail.  For example, "Smith, Joe" <jsmith>.
  405.   The solution is to remove the comma.
  406.  
  407. - Reply-To headers are not handled by the Eudora Mail Conduit. 
  408.   This is a limitation of simple MAPI.
  409.

  442.  - There is no fee or registration required to use Eudora Internet Suite
  443.    with Eudora 4.3.2 or higher (see section on registration below). 
  444.    Windows Eudora 4.3.2 also addresses a large number of significant
  445.    issues.
  446.  
  447. * Windows Eudora Pro 4.3 and 4.3.1
  448.  - In certain cases misaddressed mail will cause a Hotsync
  449.    operation to fail if Windows Eudora "Immediate Send" is set in 
  450.    the Sending Mail options. To avoid this, disable it under 
  451.    Tools/Options/Sending Mail
  452.  
  453. * Windows Eudora Pro 4.2 and older
  454.  - Synchronization with Eudora 4.2 is possible, however upgrading
  455.    to Eudora 4.3.2 or 5.0 is recommended as a significant number of 
  456.    issues have been addressed.
  457.  
  458. * Windows Eudora 4.0 and older
  459.  - Upgrading to the most recent version of Eudora is highly 
  460.    recommended. 
  461.  
  462. * Outlook Express 
  463.  - A queued message with a faulty email address previously 
  464.    composed or synchronized can cause a send error to pop on 
  465.    each HotSync operation.
  466.  
  467. * Outlook 98
  468.  - When Outlook 98 is installed along with Outlook Express 
  469.    on the same machine, MAPI gets messages from 
  470.    Outlook Express even if the conduit is trying to read 
  471.    messages from Outlook 98.
  472.  
  473.  - Sometimes a read error can occur during the HotSync process 
  474.    because of MIME incompatibility issues. To avoid this move
  475.    Inbox messages whose attachments cannot be opened on 
  476.    Outlook 98 to a different folder.
  477.  
  478.  - Certain messages with bold, underlining, etc. will not display
  479.    properly or at all. In particular these are messages in the
  480.    text/enriched format. HTML e-mail works fine.
  481.  
  482. * Exchange server with Outlook 98 as client
  483.  - For MAPI options to be available, be sure to install
  484.    Outlook 98 with Corporate or Workgroup as the
  485.    Email Service Options.
  486.  
  487.  - Can cause MAPI logon error message to appear during the 
  488.    HotSync process if you are not logged on to the network.
  489.  
  490. * Netscape Communicator - This conduit does not work as of
  491.   Netscape 4.5, though it may work with subsequent versions.
  492.   If you have a more recent version you might try the Generic
  493.   MAPI client configuration.
  494.  
  495. * AOL -- This conduit does NOT work with AOL
  496.  
  497. * cc:mail -- This conduit does NOT work with cc:mail
  498.  
  499. * Pegasus -- This conduit does NOT work with Pegasus
  500.  
  501. * Lotus Notes -- This conduit does NOT work with Notes 
  502.  
  503. * MS Internet Mail and News -- Unknown
  504.  
  505.

  507. Mail, pdQsuite, pdQmail and pdQbrowser
  508. --------------------------------------
  509.  
  510. Eudora Internet Suite was previously released as "pdQsuite". Today
  511. "Eudora" is the new name for "pdQmail" and "EudoraWeb" is the new
  512. name for "pdQbrowser".
  513.  
  514. If you purchased a reg code for pdQsuite, or obtained one as
  515. part of a bundle with another product you may use that regcode
  516. with Eudora 2.0
  517.  
  518. Note that the registration modes have changed significantly from
  519. pdQsuite. pdQsuite had a 30 day demo after which you can purchase
  520. a reg code. Eudora Internet Suite works with Eudora 4.3.2 or higher
  521. for free and you only need purchase a reg code if you wish to sync
  522. with mailers other than Eudora or versions of Eudora older than 4.3.2.
  523.  
  524. The "Mail" application on your Palm device is provided by Palm.
  525. Eudora is an alternative to the "Mail" application and provides more
  526. functionality. In particular with Eudora, you can limit the number of
  527. messages transfered to your Palm from your PC so you can Hotsync your
  528. email even if you have a large number of messages on your PC and not
  529. very much space on your Palm. Note that you should be sure to disable
  530. Hotsync for the Mail application if you are using Eudora.
  531.

  534. Purchashing and Registering Eudora Internet Suite
  535. --------------------------------------------------
  536.  
  537. Eudora Internet Suite has three registration modes as detailed
  538. below. Briefly described, Eudora Internet Suite is completely free for
  539. users of Desktop Eudora 4.3.2 or higher. Desktop Eudora 4.3.2 (which
  540. also has three modes) must be in either sponsored mode or paid mode.
  541.  
  542. * Unregistered Mode 
  543.     - Allows Hotsync with Eudora 4.3.2 or higher for free
  544.     - Allows retrieval of messages via POP/SMTP with periodic
  545.       prompting to upgrade
  546.     - No registration information is required
  547.  
  548. * Registered Mode
  549.     - Allows Hotsync with Eudora 4.3.2 or higher for free
  550.     - Allows retrivel of mesages via POP/SMTP 
  551.     - You must enter a reg code from Desktop Eudora
  552.  
  553. * Unlimited Sync Mode
  554.     - Allows Hotsync with any version of Eudora 
  555.     - Allows Hotsync with any other supported email software
