  43. Thank you for installing SETI@home.  With your help and the
  44. help of hundreds of thousands of other computer users like
  45. you, we increase the odds of detecting signs of intelligent
  46. life elsewhere in the universe.  This Help File explains how
  47. SETI@home works, how to alter its settings, or how to remove
  48. it from your computer.
  49.  
  50. SETI@home actually consists of two parts:  an "application"
  51. and a "screensaver". The application does all the work:  it
  52. downloads blocks of data from through the Internet, performs
  53. the number crunching on that data (looking for orderly
  54. patterns that might be artificial), returns the results, and
  55. gets another block of data.  The application is represented
  56. by a green radio telescope icon in the System Tray (normally
  57. at the lower right of your screen).  You can open the appli-
  58. cation window by double-clicking on this icon.
  59.  
  60. The screensaver program runs when you haven't used your key-
  61. board or mouse for a while.  It displays color pictures
  62. showing the data analysis process.  Normally the application
  63. processes data only when the screensaver is running.
  64. Optionally, you can have the application process data all
  65. the time.

  68. Logging in to SETI@home
  69. ------------------------------------------

  71. To use SETI@home you must create an "account" on the
  72. SETI@home server.  Your account is identified by your email
  73. address.  This lets us notify you in case you discover ET.
  74.  
  75. If you run SETI@home on several computers, they can all run
  76. under the same account.
  77.  
  78. When you install SETI@home, you are asked whether you want
  79. to create a new account or use an existing account.  The
  80. account is verified or created on our server at UC Berkeley,
  81. and SETI@home will run under this account indefinitely.  If
  82. you want to switch to a different account, bring up the
  83. application window, open the Settings menu, and select
  84. Change/Create login.  You will be shown the name of the
  85. current account, and you can elect to switch to another
  86. existing account or create a new account.

  88. To switch to an existing account, you just type in the email
  89. address.  If you create a new account, you will be asked for
  90.  
  91.      1. Name or nickname (handle)
  92.      2. Email address
  93.      3. Country
  94.      4. Postal code
  95.      5. Whether your computer is at school, work, or home
  96.  
  97. We will not give this information out to anyone.  We use it
  98. to get statistical information such as how many people in
  99. country X are participating in SETI@home, how many users are
  100. at school, etc.  This information is on display at our Web
  101. site, http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu.

  103. If you check the option to display your email address, your
  104. email address might be shown on our web site if your screen
  105. saver finds something interesting, or if you earn some other
  106. mention, such as by crunching more data than any other user.
  107. The default for this setting is to NOT provide your email
  108. address.  It's up to you. You can also decide whether to
  109. have your name appear on the web site.
  110.  
  111. Windows lets you declare names and passwords for different
  112. users on the same machine.  However, changing your Windows
  113. login doesn't affect SETI@home.  If you want to change your
  114. SETI@home login, you must use the Settings menu.

  118. Preferences
  119. -----------
  120.  
  121. SETI@home lets you express your preferences for when it does
  122. data analysis, and when it makes network connections.  You
  123. are asked for your choices when you install SETI@home, but
  124. you can change them later if you like.  To do so, bring up
  125. the application window, open the Settings menu, and select
  126. Preferences.
  127.  
  128. There are three sets of preferences:

  131. Data Analysis: either
  132.  
  133. - Data Analysis happens only when the screen saver is active
  134. or application window is open, or
  135.  
  136. - Data Analysis always runs
  137.  
  138. If you select the first option, SETI@home won't use any of
  139. your computer's processing power or memory when you're doing
  140. your normal work.  If you select the second option,
  141. SETI@home will analyze data all the time.  this uses about
  142. 15 MB of RAM and requires processing power, so we recommend
  143. this only if your computer is fast and has lots of RAM.  If
  144. you try this setting and notice sluggish performance of
  145. other programs, turn it off.
  146.

  148. Network Connection: either
  149.  
  150. - Ask me before connecting to the Internet, or
  151.  
  152. - Connect automatically whenever needed
  153.  
  154. You can choose whether SETI@home should ask your permission
  155. before setting up an Internet connection to the SETI@home
  156. server.  A connection to the SETI@home server is only neces-
  157. sary when it's time to retrieve a new block of data.  On a
  158. typical Pentium-class computer, this will happen every one
  159. or two days.  Therefore, connection is not going to occur
  160. very frequently, but still you may want to have the screen
  161. saver alert you before doing so.
  162.  
  163. If you connect through a modem and your computer shares the
  164. phone line with voice calls or a FAX machine, you'll prob-
  165. ably want SETI@home to ask your permission before connecting
  166. (otherwise it might try to dial while you are in a phone
  167. conversation, which can be annoying).  Choose the first
  168. option in this case.  The flashing SETI@home icon will alert
  169. you when SETI@home wants to set up a connection.
  170.  
  171. If you are connected to the Internet through a local area
  172. network (LAN) or have a modem with a dedicated phone line,
  173. choose the second option (connect automatically).  This
  174. allows SETI@home to be more productive.  If you choose this,
  175. don't be shocked when the modem suddenly begins to dial the
  176. phone, seemingly out of nowhere.  SETI@home probably just
  177. needs more data to analyze.

  179. SETI@home will connect to the Internet using the connection
  180. that is specified as the "default" connection in your Inter-
  181. net Settings.  To set or check this setting, open the
  182. Start/Settings/Control Panel/Internet/Connection.  If you
  183. use a modem to connect to the Internet, you probably already
  184. have a dialup networking connection (DUN connection) there.
  185. If you have multiple ISPs (Internet Service Providers), the
  186. DUN connection specified as the "default" connection is the
  187. one that will be used.  Use the "Set as default" check box
  188. to select which ISP will be used if SETI@home is going to
  189. make an automatic connection. If you have trouble with your
  190. Windows auto-dialing setup, just make the connection manu-
  191. ally when SETI@home gives you the option to "Connect Now".

  194. Proxy:

  196. This lets you specify the name and port number of your HTTP
  197. proxy.  An HTTP proxy is a network security barrier used by
  198. many businesses to protect their computers.  Your network
  199. administrator can give you the info.

  206. Sometimes you will notice that the SETI@home icon is blink-
  207. ing. This means that your attention is needed.  Double click
  208. on the icon for instructions.  There are several possibili-
  209. ties:
  210.  
  211. - SETI@home needs to connect to the Internet, and is waiting
  212. for your permission to do so.  If you do not have your
  213. computer set to dial automatically, you will have to dial
  214. manually (by running your Internet Dial-up connection for
  215. your ISP) before telling SETI@home to go ahead.
  216.  
  217. - There is a new version of SETI@home that you can download
  218. from our web site (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu).
  219.  
  220. - SETI@home has encountered an error that you can fix.  For
  221. example, you might be out of disk space.  Delete some files,
  222. then click on OK to have SETI@home continue.
  223.  
  224. - SETI@home has encountered an internal error.  In some
  225. cases you may be able to fix things by quitting the
  226. SETI@home application (click the button in the upper right
  227. corner of the application window) and starting it again.  If
  228. the same error occurs repeatedly, please report it to use
  229. via our web site (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu; go to
  230. "Software Download and Help").

  233. Removing SETI@home
  234. ------------------

  236. Tired of looking for ET? Want to go back to flying toasters?
  237. Is SETI@home causing problems, and want to turn it off?
  238. Here are the three options you have:
  239.  
  240. - If you want to temporarily disable SETI@home until the
  241. next time you start up, bring up the SETI@home application
  242. window.  Click on File and choose Exit.  It will run again
  243. the next time you boot up or the SETI@home screensaver runs.
  244. To run it manually, click on Start / Programs / SETI@home.
  245.  
  246. - To select another screen saver.  Click Start / Settings /
  247. Control Panel / Display / Screen Saver.  Choose a different
  248. screen saver.  If you have selected "Data analysis always
  249. runs" in your Preferences, SETI@home will continue to work
  250. in the background; otherwise it will run only when you bring
  251. up the application window.

  253. - To remove SETI@home from your computer and hard disk,
  254. click Start / Settings / Control Panel.  Then run Add/Remove
  255. Programs, select SETI@home, and click the Add/Remove... but-
  256. ton.

  262. Q: How do I bring up the SETI@home application window?
  263. A: Find the SETI@home icon in the Windows "system tray" and
  264. double-click on it.  The system tray is normally in the
  265. lower right-hand corner of the screen.  The SETI@home icon
  266. looks like a green radio telescope dish.  You can also
  267. right-click on the icon and select "Maximize".

  269. Q: Where is the SETI@home icon?  I don't see it in the sys-
  270. tem tray.
  271. A: You may have exited from the SETI@home application by
  272. accident.  You can run it again by selecting Programs /
  273. SETI@home from the Start menu.

  275. Q: I don't see SETI@home in the Programs menu.
  276. A: Install SETI@home again; download first if needed (from
  277. http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu).

  279. Q: How do I set my default screen saver?
  280. A: In the Control Panel, double click Display to bring up
  281. the Display Properties dialog.  Select the Screen Saver tab.
  282. There you will see a list of available screen savers from
  283. which to select. Note: SETI@home makes itself the default
  284. screen saver when it runs for the first time after installa-
  285. tion.

  287. Q: Can I use Windows screen saver password protection with
  288. SETI@home?
  289. A: Yes.
  290.  
  291. Q: How do I completely get rid of SETI@home?
  292. A: In the Control Panel, go to the Add/Remove Programs dia-
  293. log, and select SETI@home. Or you can select "Remove
  294. SETI@home" in the Start/Programs/SETI@home menu.

  296. Q: My PC has lots of RAM and a fast processor.  Can I have
  297. SETI@home run all of the time?
  298. A: Yes. Bring up the SETI@home application window, and in
  299. the Preferences dialog, select the checkbox "Data analysis
  300. always runs."

  302. Q: I'm running on a laptop and the installer hangs after I
  303. choose the directory into which SETI@home is to be
  304. installed. How do I fix this?
  305. A: On a few laptops, the InstallShield setup program causes
  306. a search for the floppy drive (drive A:), which takes a
  307. minute or two if the drive is not connected. Wait a bit, and
  308. the installer should recover.
