  4. GENERAL INFORMATION

  6. This document contains information that is most often provided to users of
  7. Section 1 - Non-Technical General.  It contains a description of the most
  8. frequently asked questions and their answers.
  9.  
  10. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
  11.  
  12. Q: "In which section should I post my question?"
  13.  
  14. A: Your questions are very welcome, and you should post your question to the
  15.    section that seems most appropriate to the problem.  For your convenience
  16.    here are the guidelines for each section:
  17.  
  18.    * Section 1 - Non-Technical General
  19.         General conversation or NON-TECHNICAL questions related to the
  20.         products.  If you post a technical question in this section, it
  21.         may go ananswered, or you may get a message explaining that you
  22.         need to re-post your question to another section.
  23.  
  24.    * Section 2 - Non-Technical Customer Service
  25.         Post questions regarding product pricing, availability, and and 
  26.         order information in this section.  Typical question: "How much is
  27.         the latest version of Delphi?"
  28.  
  29.    * Section 3 - Installation
  30.         Post a message to this section if you need help or have questions
  31.         about getting the products installed on your hard disk.  Once the
  32.         product is installed and runs on your computer, this section is
  33.         no longer appropriate. Typical question: "I get an 'Out of Disk
  34.         Space' error when installing Delphi, what should I do?"
  35.  
  36.    * Section 4 - Delphi IDE
  37.         This section is intended for issues related to the Delphi Integrated
  38.         Development Environment. Coding issues are not appropriate for this
  39.         section.  Typical question: "How can I reconfigure Delphi's SpeedBar?"

  41.    * Section 5 - Delphi VCL
  42.         Issues related to Delphi's Visual Component Library framework.  Here
  43.         you can get assistance with all of the component on Delphi Component
  44.         Palette with the exception of the database components and VBXs.
  45.         Typical question: "How can I dynamically create a Delphi component?"
  46.  
  47.    * Section 6 - Delphi Database
  48.         In this section, you can post issues regarding Delphi's database
  49.         components or the Borland Database Engine (IDAPI).  For issues
  50.         directly related to Client/Server programming, please post in section
  51.         10.  Typical question: "How can I connect to an Access table with
  52.         Delphi?"
  53.  
  54.    * Section 7 - Object Pascal
  55.         Use this section for discussion of Object Pascal language syntax not
  56.         directly related to the use of VCL.  Typical question: "How do you
  57.         raise an exception in Object Pascal?"
  58.  
  59.    * Section 8 - VBX Controls
  60.         Post questions regarding using or creating VBX controls in Delphi in
  61.         this section.  Typical question: "I get error X when I try to add
  62.         my VBX control to the Component Palette; what's wrong?"

  64.    * Section 9 - Component Design
  65.         This section is for discussion of creating custom Delphi components
  66.         and component and property editors.  If you wish to advertise your
  67.         custom component, you should post a message in section 22.  Typical
  68.         question: "How to a create a TEdit decendant where the Enter key
  69.         works like the tab?"

  71.    * Section 10 - Client/Server
  72.         This section is dedicated to the discussion of using Delphi's
  73.         database components and the BDE to create applications for
  74.         Client/Server (ie, Oracle, Sybase, etc.) environments. You can
  75.         get assistance on using Delphi to communicate with the Local
  76.         InterBase Server (LIBS) in this section, but LIBS itself is 
  77.         supported in section 9 of the BDevTools forum.  Typical question:
  78.         "How can I execute a stored procedure on my Oracle server?"
  79.  
  80.    * Section 11 - OLE / DDE
  81.         If you need help with using Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) or
  82.         Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) in your Delphi or Pascal applications,
  83.         then this is the place to be.  Typical question: "How can I embed
  84.         a Word document in my program using the TOleContainer component?"
  85.  
  86.    * Section 14 - Windows API
  87.         Post a message here if you have a question directly related to the
  88.         Windows API (ie, not related to VCL or OWL).  Typical question:
  89.         "What API function should I use to execute another application?"
  90.  
  91.    * Section 15 - Debugger / Tools
  92.         This section supports Turbo Debugger and the various tools that
  93.         accompany Delphi and Pascal including Turbo Profiler, WinSight,
  94.         WinSpector, and Resource Workshop.  Typical question: "What is the
  95.         proper technique for creating a RCDATA resource in Resource
  96.         Workshop?"

  98.    * Section 16 - OWL / BWCC
  99.         Post messages dealing with Object Windows Library (OWL) or Borland
  100.         Windows Custom Controls (BWCC) in this section.  Typical question:
  101.         "How can use the BWCC controls in my TDialog?"

  103.    * Section 17 - TP/BP DOS Programming
  104.         This section deals with programming for DOS real mode under Turbo
  105.         and Borland Pascal, including graphics programming.  Typical question:
  106.         "Is it possible to link C .OBJ files to my Turbo Pascal code?"

  108.    * Section 18 - Turbo Vision
  109.         Messages dealing with the Pascal Turbo Vision framework belong in this
  110.         section.  Typical question: "How do I give focus to a particular
  111.         TInputLine control?"

  113.    * Section 19 - Protected Mode
  114.         Discussion of programming for DOS Protected Mode Interface (DPMI)
  115.         with Borland Pascal 7.0.  Typical question: "How can I simulate an
  116.         array that breaks the 64k barrier?"

  118.    * Section 20 - Networks
  119.         Use this section for discussion of network programming NOT related
  120.         to Delphi's Database components.  Typical question: "How can I allow
  121.         two computers to simultaneously read the same file located on a 
  122.         networked drive?"

  125.         This section is a "Classifieds" area intended for use by companies
  126.         seeking employees and individuals seeking employers.  Typical
  127.         post: "Looking for an awesome Delphi programmer..."

  130.         This section is reserved for 3rd parties to advertise products they
  131.         have that work in conjunction with Delphi and Pascal.  Typical post:

  149.    Help|Contents, and click either the "Object Pascal" or "Visual Component

  175.    NT shortly after the general commercial release of Windows 95."

  179. A: Specific pricing information is not available at this time.  However,
  180.    although the it will be for a new platform, you can be sure that Borland
  181.    will have special upgrade pricing available for folks who bought the
  182.    current version of Delphi.

  184. Q: "Will there be a Delphi for OS/2 or the Macintosh?"

  186. A: Borland has announced no plans at this time to produce OS/2 or Mac versions
  187.    of Delphi.
