-
- Configuring a LANtastic Network for ModemShare
-
- ModemShare has three executable files that enable modems to be shared
- across the network. AILANBIO.EXE and the network driver must be loaded
- prior to ModemShare.
-
- Note: These drivers load in DOS only. If youÆre setting up a Windows
- 3.x computer to be the ModemShare server, you must load MSERVER and
- MLCLIENT in DOS.
-
- MSERVER.EXE: This program enables modems to be shared across the network.
- It requires the SERVER.CON configuration file to be loaded. The following
- is an example, using the default directory:
-
- C:\INSYNC\MSHARE\MSERVER.EXE C:\INSYNC\MSHARE\SERVER.CON
-
- MLCLIENT.EXE: This program enables the user working on the ModemShare
- server computer to access the modem.. It requires MSERVER to be loaded in
- memory first. The following is an example, using the default directory:
-
- C:\INSYNC\MSHARE\MLCLIENT.EXE C:\INSYNC\MSHARE\CLIENT.CON
-
- MCLIENT.EXE must also be loaded on the client computers to enable them to
- access the ModemShare server. The following is an example, using the
- default directory:
-
- C:\INSYNC\MSHARE\MCLIENT.EXE C:\INSYNC\MSHARE\CLIENT.CON
-
- Note: You can load MCLIENT in DOS on a Windows 3.x machine or load the
- MCLIENT.DLL in Windows. However, if you want to use INT14 or NASI, the
- MCLIENT.EXE must be loaded in DOS or the install will automatically set up
- the computer to load in Windows.
-
- MSHARE.VXD: This program loads on a Windows 95 ModemShare server or
- client and provides sharing of modems or connection to the ModemShare
- server. It loads from the Windows 95 registry.
-
-
- DOS INSTALLATION:
-
- 1. Insert Disk 1 into the floppy drive on your system. Depending on
- the drive you use, type A:\Install or B:\Install at the command line and
- press Enter to begin the installation. The Install or Uninstall ModemShare
- screen appears.
-
- . Select Install with your arrow keys and press Enter. The Select
- Network Type screen appears.
-
- . Select the LANtastic or NetBEUI/NetBIOS Networks and press
- Enter. On the Network Summary screen, select Continue and press Enter.
- The Connection Type screen appears.
-
- . Select ModemShare Server or ModemShare Client (depending on which
- type of computer youÆre installing at this time) and press Enter.
-
- . Choose to have a batch file created or to add the client or
- server files to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and press Enter.
-
- Note: When you choose to add to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, ModemShare
- will install the lines as the last lines in the file. If your system is
- configured to boot automatically into Windows, move the WIN command below
- the MSERVER and MLCLIENT lines in the AUTOEXEC.BAT.
-
- The Installation Drive screen appears.
-
- . Select the letter of the drive (either located on your computer
- or a network drive) where you want to install the ModemShare files and
- press Enter. The Directory Location screen appears.
-
- . ModemShare will default to the C:\INSYNC\MSHARE directory. You
- may choose an alternate destination or press Enter. The Configuration
- Options screen appears.
-
- Note: If youÆre installing a ModemShare client, skip to step 14.
- Steps 8 - 11 are for ModemShare servers only.
-
- ModemShare server only:
- . Select the configuration option that matches your configuration:
- ╖ If youÆre using a multiport serial card in the ModemShare
- server, select the multiport boards option and press Enter and proceed to
- step 11.
- ╖ If youÆre using standard COM ports with modems attached, press
- Enter and proceed to step 9.
- ╖ If youÆre configuring the server for a direct connection to
- another computer, select the standard COM ports without modems attached
- option, press Enter and proceed to step 9.
-
- . At the COM Port Selection screen, select the combination of COM
- ports that youÆre using for your modem connections and press Enter. These
- are the COM ports that ModemShare will allow others to access. If you
- choose the serial port option, you must have a non-intelligent serial
- board. The Default Baud Rate screen appears.
-
- . Select the default speed for your modem (or if you have multiple
- modems, choose the speed for the slowest one) and press Enter. (Keep in
- mind that this selection is only used to initialize the modem. When
- necessary, your communications software will override this default speed
- during a communications session.)
-
- . Read the information regarding sample files and press any key to
- continue.
-
- . Install starts to copy files to your specified installation
- location. During this process youÆll be prompted to put Disk 2 into the
- floppy drive. Do so, then press any key to continue. When all of the
- ModemShare files have been installed, the Installation Successful screen
- appears.
-
- WINDOWS and WINDOWS 95 INSTALL
-
- . Insert Disk 1 into the floppy drive on your system. Type A:\Setup
- where A: is the floppy drive that contains Disk 1. Click OK. Read the
- Welcome window and click Next to continue. The Choose Destination Location
- window appears.
-
- . To use the default destination (C:INSYNC\MSHARE), click Next.
- (This is the recommended destination.) The Choose Network window appears.
-
- . ModemShare will default to the Artisoft LANtastic Network. Click
- Next. The Share Modem Window appears.
-
- . ModemShare client: If you donÆt want to share the modem thatÆs
- attached to your computer leave the check box in the Share Modem window
- empty and click Next. Then go on to step 5.
- ModemShare server: If you do want to share the modem thatÆs
- attached to your computer, click the check box in the Share Modem window,
- then click next.
- Note: If you want to be a ModemShare server and you get the error
- message ôSetup has found an existing copy of PORTSETC.EXEö you already
- have ModemShare or Modem Assist Plus (a previous version of ModemShare)
- installed on your computer. You can continue with the installation and
- ModemShare will overwrite the files.
-
- The Modem Server Configuration window appears.
-
- Hint: For information about setting the options in this window,
- read the text in the Hints box.
-
- Click the Connection Type that matches your configuration. You may
- also need to make selections in the COM Ports box and the Default Baud
- Rate box, depending on the Connection Type you chose. Selections that
- arenÆt required for each Connection Type will be disabled. When youÆre
- finished with your selections, click Next.
-
- Important: The default COM Port and Baud Rate settings may not be
- correct for your configuration. The COM Port setting should be the same as
- the COM port where your modem is attached, and the baud rate should match
- the speed of your modem.
-
- . If the Port Selection window appears, click the down arrow, click
- the COM port that you want to use to access the modem(s) attached to other
- computers, then click Next.
-
- Note: If youÆre installing as a ModemShare client on Windows 95
- (not sharing a modem thatÆs on your computer) the Port Selection window
- will appear. If youÆre installing as a ModemShare server on Windows 95,
- the Port Selection window may not appear, depending on the Connection Type
- you chose.
-
- . Setup copies files to your hard drive, then creates a new Program
- Group called INSYNC ModemShare. Put Disk 2 into your floppy drive when
- prompted.
-
- Note (Windows 95 only): After the installation youÆll need to create a
- modem object for your redirected COM port. From the control panel, click
- Modem. Windows 95 will detect your redirected COM port. When the Install
- Wizard asks you which COM port to use, select the ModemShare port youÆre
- redirecting through in Port Status and Setup. If Windows 95 doesnÆt
- detect the redirected COM port, you may have to set the modem manually.
