  2. interpreter for Version 8 of Icon.

  22.    Files with the following suffixes are text files and should be
  23. transferred in ascii (text) mode:
  24.  
  25.         .com      (VMS scripts)
  26.         .doc      (documents formatted for mono-spaced devices)
  27.         .hqx      (Macintosh BinHex 4.0 encoding)
  28.  
  29. Files with the following suffixes contain binary information and
  30. should be transferred in binary (image) mode:
  31.  
  32.         .arc      (ARC packaged files)
  33.         .bck      (VMS BACKUP)
  34.         .cpi      (UNIX cpio files)
  35.         .exe      (MS-DOS executables)
  36.     .ps      (PostScript documents)
  37.         .tar      (UNIX tar files)
  38.         .zoo      (Zoo packaged files)
  39.         .Z        (UNIX Compress 4.0 files)
  40.  
  41. File names without extensions also are binary.
  42.  
  43. Although most PostScript (.ps) files can be treated as text and
  44. downloaded in ascii mode, some cannot. It is always safe to transfer
  45. PostScript files as binary data.
  46.  
  47.    Note:  In some cases, the files are images of diskettes.  As
  48. such, they preserve the structure of the physical distribution as
  49. referred to in their documentation.  One consequence of this is
  50. that, for example, there are ARC files within ARC files.
  51.  
  52.    In some cases, ``natural'' file names have been modified to
  53. conform to limitations of some operating systems.  You may need
  54. to rename these files at your end.

  57. Icon program material:
  58. -------------------------------------------------------------------
  59. Notes:  Source for all versions of Icon is basically the same.  Different
  60. distributions are in different formats and contain system-specific
  61. configuration information.
  62.  
  63. The Icon program library is the same for all systems; only the format
  64. varies. The Icon program library contains Idol, an object-oriented
  65. version of Icon written in Icon.
