  4. Thank you for installing BigDisk!  This document contains 
  5. late-breaking information that is not found in the manual. 
  6.  
  7. If you are viewing this in Notepad, maximize the notepad 
  8. window. Carriage returns have been added to ensure that it 
  9. fits on a 640x480 display, and that the text doesn't run 
  10. off the edge of your window.
  11.  
  12. This ReadMe contains information on the following:

  20. 1. Removable Drives
  21. ===================
  22.  
  23. BigDisk supports the use of removable drives as secondary 
  24. storage.  However, it is important to note that once files 
  25. have been relocated to a removable disk, you should
  26. NEVER remove that disk from the drive.  If you remove a disk 
  27. that has relocated files on it, those files will show up as 
  28. zero-byte files.  Re-inserting the disk will correct this 
  29. problem.  If you do not re-insert the disk, data loss or 
  30. system instability may occur.

  32. BigDisk was tested with the following removable drives:
  33.  
  34. Iomega JAZ
  35. Iomega ZIP 
  36. SyQuest SyJet
  37. SyQuest EZ-Drive 135
  38. SyQuest EZ-Flyer 230
  39.  
  40. Please note that using slower drives (like ZIP drives) as 
  41. secondary space can adversely affect file system performance.
  42.  
  43. Also note that BigDisk always relocates to the drive with the 
  44. MOST free space.  If you use a large drive like a JAZ or SyJet 
  45. drive, you may not want to use it as secondary space until your 
  46. other secondary drives are filled.  (This is because fixed 
  47. disks are generally faster than JAZ and SyJet drives.)

  50. 2. BigDisk and UnInstaller Utilities
  51. ====================================

  53. Uninstaller utilities like CyberMedia UnInstaller, Quarterdeck 
  54. CleanSweep, and IMSI WinDelete may be able to remove the BigDisk 
  55. program from your system, but they cannot restore relocated files 
  56. to their original location.  Thus, uninstalling BigDisk using 
  57. these utilities can result in data loss.  
  58.  
  59. BigDisk's own uninstaller will undo all relocations before 
  60. removing BigDisk.

  63. 3. SmartSpace
  64. ==============
  65.  
  66. Some applications may install files that need to be accessed 
  67. BEFORE Windows 95 completes the booting process.  With 
  68. "SmartSpace" ON, these files may get redirected.  This can lead 
  69. to bootup errors.  Although these errors are generally harmless, 
  70. if you do experience problems of this sort, you can always undo 
  71. the relocations using the Relocation tab in BigDisk Properties. 
  72. See the Troubleshooting section of this document for more details.

  75. 4. Troubleshooting BigDisk
  76. ==========================

  78. Files are missing during bootup
  79.  
  80. This can occur if a file in a relocated directory is accessed 
  81. before the BigDisk redirector software is loaded.  Some 
  82. applications may load files during the boot procedure that are 
  83. not in a fixed directory and those files may get relocated to 
  84. another drive.  The fix for this is to undo the relocation of 
  85. these files by using the relocation tab in the BigDisk Properties 
  86. dialog and then marking that directory as fixed in the 
  87. Safety tab.  
  88.  
  89. Restoring your system from MS-DOS
  90.  
  91. If for some reason your system does not boot into Windows 
  92. (for example, if you get an "Error loading IOS.VXD"), you can 
  93. restore your files to their original location from MS-DOS.  Reboot 
  94. the machine and press F8 when you see "Starting Windows 95".  
  95. Select "Command Prompt Only".  Go to the \Windows\System\IOSubSys 
  96. directory, and rename FREDIR.VXD to something like FREDIR.XXX.  
  97. Finally, use XCOPY32 to move the files back:

  99. XCOPY32 D:\_FRDDAT_\*.* C:\*.* /S /E
  100.  
  101. Do this for EACH drive letter used for relocation.  
  102. (The example assumes relocated data is on your D: drive).
  103.  
  104. *** IMPORTANT *** Use XCOPY32.EXE, not XCOPY.EXE.  
  105. XCOPY32.EXE preserves long filenames.
