- In 1979, the United States Navy decided to prolong the life of the LAFAYETTE
- class submarines by retrofitting 12 of the boats with quieter propulsion equip-
- ment that would further insulate the sub from detection. Also added was the
- Trident C-4 missile which was more capable than the Poseidon. Work was com-
- pleted on the submarines in 1982. And all 12 of the submarines carry the
- designation of BENJAMIN FRANKLIN class missile boats.
-
- The BENJAMIN FRANKLIN submarines come equipped with upgraded commercial
- navigation systems and radars for surface operations. The subs have two Mark
- 2 Ship's Inertial Navigation Systems, which update missile targeting via
- satellites. They also have four forward torpedo tubes capable of firing the Mark
- 48 torpedo.
-
- Between 1963 and 1967, a total of 31 submarines were built in the LAFAYETTE
- and BENJAMIN FRANKLIN class. However, some of these boats were decommis-
- sioned to comply with the provisions of the SALT II treaty limits. Many others are
- slated for decommissioning and retirement as the United States makes further
- reductions in the 1990s.
