-
- WHAT'S NEW THIS VERSION:
- -------------------------
-
- This is the release version of WinTalk 1.25. It fixes some
- bugs from 1.24, and adds a couple of new features (integration with
- the Win95 UI and support for WinTalk web links).
-
- PLEASE READ THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY - you may need to
- pick up a copy of the appropriate 3d-control DLL from ftp.elf.com!
-
-
- NOTE FOR WINDOWS-95 USERS:
- --------------------------
-
- If you use Norton Navigator, please check out the WinTalk web page
- for important information about a NNav bug which may affect WinTalk!
-
-

-
- 1.0 Installation instructions
- ------------------------------
-
- To use WinTalk, you must have a WINSOCK.DLL that operates with your
- windows TCP/IP networking stack. For more information on this,
- please contact your network vendor.
-
- Since there is no installer program for WinTalk yet, you'll need to
- install it yourself, but don't worry - it's very easy. You've
- already taken the first step by unpacking the .zip file and reading
- this README. The .zip file contains the following files:
-
- README.1ST - This file
- WTALK16.EXE - The 16-bit executable
- WTALK32.EXE - The 32-bit executable
- WINTALK.HLP - The help file
- DINGDING.WAV - An initial "ring" sound
-
- Place all the files in whatever directory you wish to run
- them from. As is probably apparent from the filenames, WTALK16.EXE
- is the 16-bit version, and WTALK32.EXE is the 32-bit version.
-
- Transfer the "dingding.wav" file to your WINDOWS directory,
- so WinTalk can find it; if you plan to use another sound for
- WinTalk's "ring", or no sound, this is not necessary.
-
- ....Confirm presence of CTL3D
-
- You'll need to make sure that a version of Microsoft's 3d
- control DLL is in your WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory. If you run WinTalk
- and it complains about a missing CTL3D (or CTL3D32) DLL, you'll need
- to do the following:
-
- 1. FTP to ftp.elf.com
-
- 2. Connect to the /pub/wintalk/dlls directory.
-
- 3. Get the appropriate version of the DLL:
- - For Windows 3.1, it's CTL3D.DLL
- - For Windows 95, it's Win95/CTL3D32.DLL
- - For Windows NT, it's WinNT/CTL3D32.DLL
- - For Win32s, it's Win32s/CTL3D32.DLL
-
- 4. Copy the DLL to your system directory:
- - For Windows 3.1, Windows 95, or Win32s, this is WINDOWS/SYSTEM
- - For Windows NT, this is WINDOWS/SYSTEM32
-
-
- 2.0 Using WinTalk
- ------------------
- [Win 3.1, Win NT, Win32s]
-
- You can use the Program Manager File->New command to create an icon
- for WinTalk in an appropriate Program Manager group. Please make
- sure to select the appropriate version (WTALK16 / WTALK32). If you
- place WinTalk in the "Startup" group, it will come up each time you
- start windows, and you will always be able to receive talk requests
- if you desire. [NOTE: This technique will sometimes fail if WinTalk
- ends up loading before your winsock stack has connected you to the
- net. In this case, you'll get a startup error (usually error
- #10091). If this happens, refer to the documentation for your
- winsock stack to find out how to auto-load programs after a
- connection has been established.]
-
- When you start WinTalk, the smiley-face icon will appear at the
- bottom of your screen. If you click the icon with the left mouse
- button, you'll get the WinTalk system menu, from which you may access
- all of the program's functionality. See the on-line help for more
- information.
-
- [Windows 95]
-
- - Option 1:
-
- When you start WinTalk, it will immediately minimize itself to the
- taskbar. To use it, *right*-click on the WinTalk taskbar pane, which
- will bring up the WinTalk system menu. See the on-line help for more
- information.
-
- - Option 2:
-
- If you add the line "tray_only = yes" to your WINTALK.INI file,
- WinTalk will not appear in the normal taskbar area - instead it will
- run as a small icon in the tray area. To access the menu, simply
- click on the tray icon. See "new features" for more info.
-
- 3.0 WinTalk "Pro"
- ------------------
-
- In addition to this FreeWare version, WinTalk now has a commercial
- brother, WinTalk Pro. WinTalk Pro is available for $20 from ELF and
- includes:
-
- - Call Answering : An answering machine for your computer! The
- icon's eyes flash to let you know you have messages, and you can
- initiate a talk to anyone who's left you a message with the click
- of a button.
-
- - Call Screening : You can now set a group of "VIPs" in your hotlist,
- and only those users will ring through to you. Everyone else will
- get your choice of a refusal, a "not logged in" notification, or
- your answering machine.
-
- - Your very own WinTalk floppy in the mail (should you desire it -
- you will also be able to obtain WinTalk Pro via FTP)
-
- - Free copies of all maintenence releases of WinTalk Pro through v2.0.
-
- - A copy of WinTalk Pro v2.0 (once it's released) for only $5
-
- - The warm fuzzy feeling of supporting the development of software
- you like!
-
- For complete ordering information, see the on-line help or the
- WinTalk web page (http://www.elf.com/elf/wintalk.html).
-
-
- 4.0 New features (since version 1.24)
- --------------------------------------
-
- * Combined 16/32 bit release
-
- * Can act as a Win95 "icon tray" application
-
- To use this feature, add the following line to your WINTALK.INI
- file:
-
- tray_only = yes
-
- KNOWN BUG : when using WinTalk as a tray app, the tooltips
- for all icons in the tray will occasionally stop working.
- They can be fixed by clicking on any other (non-WinTalk) icon.
- A lot of people asked me for this feature, so I'm releasing it
- in this version, despite this problem, which I don't consider
- too serious and haven't been able to track down yet.
-
- * WinTalk as a WWW helper app:
-
- To use wintalk as a web helper, you'll need to configure your web
- server to send files with the extension ".wtk" as MIME type
- "application/x-wintalk". Then configure your browser to use the
- wintalk executable as the helper for that type/extension. (please
- refer to your web server / browser documentation for details).
-
- Then simply create files called "*.wtk" which contain the "user@host"
- to talk to, and put a link <a href="fred.wtk">like this one</a> in
- your HTML documents. The contents of fred.wtk might be, for
- instance, "fred@my.net.com". Then when anyone clicks on that link
- with a properly configured browser, WinTalk will automatically talk
- fred@my.net.com....
-
-
- 5.0 Bugs fixed
- ---------------
-
- Since version 1.24:
-
- * Various memory problems
- * Font selection / restoration works much better
- * Socket cleanup on failed talks won't try closing an invalid socket
- * Occasional GPF when using system-modal dialogs is gone
- * Special chars (c > 128) display properly
- * Edit buffers in talk windows don't "fill up"
- * Status bar updates now work all the time
-
