  7. NOTE to users of previous versions: This version is fully compatible with your
  8. old password file (PASS.DAT). Just in case, though, it's always a good idea
  9. to make a backup of both PASS.DAT and your old PASSKEEP.EXE first.

  11. Introduction
  12. ------------
  13. PassKeeper is a Windows utility that allows you keep a list of accounts with
  14. usernames, passwords, and notes. This list is stored encrypted.
  15.  
  16. I developed PassKeeper in order to keep track of the many different "accounts"
  17. I have across the Net. Many services on the Web, for example, require you to
  18. register and give out a username and password, which you are often allowed
  19. to pick out yourself, but not always. Examples of such services include
  20. HotWired, Pathfinder, Amazon, etc. Of course, PassKeeper can be used to safely
  21. keep a record of anything, really.

  23. PassKeeper is freeware. All I ask is that this file remains with any
  24. redistributions of PassKeeper. Also, if you find any bugs or have any
  25. suggestions on improving PassKeeper, feel free to email me at brad@isys.hu

  30. I assume no liability for lost data as a result of this program. If you
  31. forget your password or you stumble across a bug that prevents you from
  32. accessing your password file (there was one in version 1.0), please do
  33. not ask me to recover your file. I can't. Just delete PASS.DAT and start
  34. over.

  36. PassKeeper uses Eric Young's implementation of CBC Triple DES Encryption.

  40. Installation and Usage
  41. ----------------------
  42. Installation is simple. You've already done it. When you run PASS32.EXE for
  43. the first time, you will be asked to enter the password you would like to use
  44. to access PassKeeper in the future. This password is also the key to
  45. encrypting and decrypting your data. It is very important that you do not
  46. forget this password, as your data will be undecipherable. You can change
  47. your password later, but only after logging in to the program.

  49. PassKeeper creates two files:
  50.   PASS.INI  Contains the user-configurable options.
  51.   PASS.DAT  Contains the encrypted data.
  52.  
  53. If someone else using this machine would like to have their own PassKeeper
  54. list, just copy PASS32.EXE to a separate directory.
  55.  
  56. If you ever forget your password the only thing you can do is delete the
  57. PASS.DAT file. You will lose all your entries of course. Actually, I suggest
  58. just renaming PASS.DAT or storing it somewhere else just in case you
  59. eventually remember the password.

  63. -------
  64. PassKeeper has only two user-configurable options:
  65.   Confirm Remove        When this option is checked, you will be asked
  66.                         whether you really want to remove an item when you
  67.                         click the 'Remove' button.

  69.   Auto-Save on Quit     When this option is checked, any changes you made
  70.                         while in PassKeeper will be saved automatically upon
  71.                         Quit (or Exit, or Close). Otherwise, you will be asked
  72.                         whether you would like to save your changes.

  77. None. Yeah right. None that I can see right now, but I'm sure there are still
  78. some around somewhere. Let me know if you find any.
