- SCREEN DREAMS README
-
- This file contains important information about SCREEN DREAMS
- that may not be included in your manual.
-
- WAKE UP RESPONSE AND COMPATIBILITY
-
- The SCREEN DREAMS theme you have purchased contains high-
- quality photographicimages created directly from original
- photos. The images are then compressed in order to
- provide you with a large number of images while using a
- minimum amount of hard disk space.
-
- The theme's settings, available in the Customize dialogue,
- include a checkbox called "For Maximum Compatibility..."
- By default, this box is checked on. With this box checked,
- SCREEN DREAMS will not be able to respond to your wake up
- request until it has finished decompressing the current
- picture.
-
- Using this option reduces the possibility that other
- currently running applications will interfere with the
- decompression process. Examples of programs that could have
- compatibility problems with SCREEN DREAMS in this manner
- include some types of communications packages, macro
- players, games, and multimedia presentations.
-
- However, even with this option enabled, the time it takes
- the screen saver to wake up will never be longer than the
- amount of time the program normally takes to move from one
- picture to the next. If you choose to turn this default off,
- SCREEN DREAMS will wake up immediately, but if you
- experience problems, you should turn it back on.
-
- CAPTURING WALLPAPER AND MAXIMUM COMPATIBILITY
-
- With the maximum compatibility option enabled, you must
- issue the command to capture wallpaper BEFORE the next
- picture begins decompressing. To do this, wait until the
- transition to the picture you want is complete and then
- immediately press your wallpaper capture hotkey. The
- timing is crucial to avoid getting the next picture (the
- one currently decompressing) instead of the one you want.
-
- SCREEN DREAMS AND OTHER SCREEN SAVERS
-
- During the installation process, if you specify that you
- want SCREEN DREAMS to load automatically when Windows opens,
- SCREEN DREAMS sets the Windows screen saver in the Control
- panel to "none." SCREEN DREAMS then runs by being launched
- from the Windows Startup Group. You should not run any other
- screen savers at the same time as SCREEN DREAMS; running
- more than one screen saver at a time may cause unexpected
- results.
-
- RUNNING SCREEN DREAMS IN 16-COLOR MODE
-
- SCREEN DREAMS will display quality photographic images even
- if your machine can only display 16 colors. However, since
- some of the photographs may have subtle color shading, the
- pictures will obviously not be as sharp or as vivid as in
- higher resolutions. In order to make the pictures look their
- best in a 16 color display, SCREEN DREAMS reserves as many
- of these 16 colors for its own use as it can. This may cause
- any of the following effects:
-
- 1. If a dialog, such as password entry, is displayed on top
- of the currently displayed image, the dialog will appear
- in black and white only.
-
- 2. In order to make the thumbnail images in the Customize
- dialog recognizable in 16 colors, the remainder of the
- dialog appears only in black, white, and two shades of
- gray. The quality of the photo actually displayed by the
- screen saver will be better than the image quality you
- see when you zoom the thumbnail image. This is because
- two of the colors normally available for display are
- being used for the two shades of gray needed by the
- Customize dialog. In the actual SCREEN DREAMS display,
- the slots used by the two shades of gray are freed for
- other colors.
-
- 3. While using the Customize dialog, SCREEN DREAMS changes
- the color palette as you move through the thumbnails.
- This also changes the color palette of any other windows
- or backgrounds that may be visible on your screen. As
- soon as you close the Customize dialog, the colors will
- be properly restored. This is also true of machines
- running in higher resolutions.
-
- 4. When SCREEN DREAMS is active and switching between
- photographs, a transition is made from one picture to
- the next. Part of this transition is a change to the
- color palette needed for the next picture display, which
- will briefly cause the colors in the first image to
- change.
-
- 5. You will receive a warning if you try to capture an
- image for wallpaper. A Windows bitmap file (.bmp or
- .rle) cannot contain the optimized color palette SCREEN
- DREAMS uses for display.
-
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
-
- The photographic theme you have purchased requires a 386 or
- higher processor. We recommend a minimum of 4MB of RAM,
- although less will work if you are using virtual memory.
- The best way to find out if you have sufficient memory to
- run SCREEN DREAMS is to select About Program Manager... from
- the Help menu in the Windows Program Manager. In the About
- dialogue, the 386 Enhanced Mode Memory number must be at
- least 4,000 KB. See your Windows manual if you need to change
- this setting.
-
- WAKEUP DEFAULTS
-
- By default, all three Wake Up options are set to on. This
- includes keyboard, mouse click, and mouse move. Some people
- prefer to NOT have mouse move defaulted since it can be
- easy to wake up SCREEN DREAMS accidentally. Use the Wake Up
- dialogue in Preferences if you want to change the defaults.
