- #Configuring Soft Fonts
- Configuring Soft Fonts
-
- JetForm-Design provides the capability to create
- printer control files for downloadable soft
- fonts for all supported printers.
-
- You can create printer control files for soft
- fonts purchased from the printer manufacturer or
- from third party vendors. The soft font files
- from third party vendors must conform to the
- format specified by the printer manufacturer
- or problems may be encountered in creating the
- printer control file. Refer to the documentation
- provided with your printer for more information
- on soft font packages supported.
-
- The printer control file created is like a new
- "cartridge" for your laser printer. If you
- purchased a new font cartridge for your printer
- you would have several new fonts available for
- printing. This function enables you to create a
- "cartridge" file, which contains the printer
- configuration information JetForm-Design
- requires for downloadable soft fonts.
-
- Once created, the new "cartridge" is then
- available for selection. When included in
- your configuration file, these soft fonts are
- available for text and field items in the forms
- you create with JetForm-Design.
-
- You will find your JetForm directory less
- cluttered if you store your soft font files in
- another directory. For example, you could
- create a directory on your hard disk called
- FONTS, and store your soft font files there.
- When you create the soft font "cartridge" with
- the configuration function, you just have to
- identify the directory when you select the soft
- font files.
-
- To create a printer control file for soft fonts,
- follow these steps:
-
- Step 1 If Softfonts in the Menu Bar appears in
- gray, the printer driver you selected
- does not accommodate soft fonts. These
- would include Generic Postscript,
- IBM 4216, and any of the non-laser
- printers. Otherwise, Click on SoftFonts
- in the Menu Bar. The Prepare Soft Fonts
- for JetForm dialog box appears.
-
- Step 2 You must assign a file name for the soft
- font "cartridge". A default file name
- of SOFTFONT appears in the text box
- labelled Cartridge.
-
- If you don't want to use the default
- file name, Click at the beginning of the
- text box labelled Cartridge. Use the
- delete key to delete SOFTFONT, and type the
- desired file name. Don't include a file
- extension as it will be appended
- automatically (LJ). Make a note of the
- file name.
-
- Step 3 Next you must select the font files to
- be included. The value in the text box
- labelled Files In, controls the file
- names that are displayed in the list
- box. You can use the DOS wildcard
- characters (?, *) to identify groups of
- file names. For example, HV*.USP to
- identify Helvetica portrait fonts.
-
- Click at the beginning of the text box
- labelled Files In. Type the desired file
- specification, and press enter. If you
- have stored the soft font files in a
- directory other than the JetForm
- directory, include the directory name
- (ie. \FONTS\HV*.USP). The file names in
- the list box change to reflect the
- entered file specification.
-
- Step 4 Click on the desired soft font file names.
- You can select as many file names as you
- like.
-
- Step 5 You can designate whether the
- fonts are to be used as Temporary or
- Permanent soft fonts when they are
- downloaded into the printer by JetForm.
-
- Temporary soft fonts are always compiled
- into the form (MDF) and will always be
- loaded into the printer as "Temporary".
- Temporary fonts are deleted from the
- printer memory at the end of the print
- job.
-
- Permanent soft fonts are only compiled
- into the form and downloaded into the
- printer when you request it. Permanent
- soft fonts are not deleted from the
- printer memory at the end of the print
- job.
-
- To designate the fonts as either
- Temporary or Permanent, Click on the
- appropriate option button.
-
- Step 6 When all your selections have been made,
- Click on the OK command button to
- implement them. The new soft font
- "cartridge" is created.
-
- If you are intending to use both the portrait
- and landscape versions of a font you should
- include them in the same soft font "cartidge"
- (E.g. select \FONTS\HV*.US*). This avoids
- duplication of the required character width
- information within the configuration files.
-
- After you create the soft font "cartridge", you
- must configure it before it can be used in
- JetForm-Design. This is done using the Font
- Cartridge command from the Select pull-down
- menu.
-
- Step 7 Click on Select in the Menu Bar.
-
- Step 8 Point to Font Cartridge in the pull-down
- menu, and Click. The Select Font
- Cartridges dialog box appears.
-
- Previous selections are designated with an
- asterisk. However, if you still want to use
- them, you must select them again.
-
- Step 9 Click on the desired font cartridges,
- including the soft font "cartridge"
- you just created.
-
- You can select as many cartridges as you like.
- However, the most practical limit is 100
- combinations of type, point size, and type
- style.
-
- Step 10 When all your selections have been
- made, Click on the OK command button to
- implement them.
-
- Step 11 Save the new configuration. Click on
- File the Menu Bar. Point to Save in
- the pull-down menu, and Click.
-
- Step 12 Exit the configuation function. Click
- on File in the Menu Bar. Point to Exit
- in the pull-down menu and Click.
-
- #AutoFont Support
- AutoFont Support
-
- The Compugraphics/HP AutoFont mechanism is
- supported winthin the JetForm configuration
- function. When these fonts are created or
- added to your, entries are made in an
- AUTOFONT directory. These entries provide
- applications with the font metrics for the fonts.
- JetForm Configuration allows the user to configure
- AutoFont fonts for use by JetForm. New fonts from
- HP, and those generated by Compugraphics Type
- Director will update the AUTOFONT directory.
-
- The AutoFont command within JfConfig operates in
- a similar fashion to the SoftFont option. You
- can select one or more fonts, which are
- stored in a user named 'logical cartridge' file.
- The cartridge file would then be selected for
- inclusion in the configuration by the Select -
- Font Cartridges command.
-
- To use the AutoFont command, follow these steps:
-
- Step 1 Click on AutoFont in the Menu Bar.
- The program will search for a directory
- called AUTOFONT off the root of the
- currently active drive (e.g. C:\AUTOFONT).
- If such a directory does not exist,
- message #110 "The AUTOFONT directory is
- not correct. Please change it or refer
- to the JetForm documentation" is
- displayed. Click on the OK command
- button, or press enter, to acknowledge
- the message. The Prepare AutoFonts for
- JetForm dialog box appears.
-
- Step 2 You must assign a file name for the
- "logical cartridge". A default file name
- of AUTOFONT appears in the text box
- labelled Cartridge Name. If you don't
- want to use the default name, Click at
- the beginning of the text box and use
- the delete key to delete AUTOFONT, and
- type the desired name. Don't include a
- file extension as it will be appended
- automatically (LJ). Make a note of the
- file name.
-
- Step 3 Next you must identify the files to be
- included. The value in the text box
- labelled AutoFont Directory, controls
- the file names that are displayed in the
- list box. If you received message #110,
- you must change the directory from
- \AUTOFONT to the directory where you
- have installed your AutoFont software.
- You can use the DOS wildcard characters
- (?,*) to identify groups of file names.
-
- Click at the beginning of the text box
- labelled AutoFont Directory. Type the
- desired directory and optionally a file
- specification, and press enter. The
- contents of the list box change to
- display the selected fonts. The font
- name, point size, style, and source
- appears for each font.
-
- Step 4 More than one font can be selected from
- the list box.
-
- Step 5 If you are selecting soft fonts, you can
- designate whether the fonts are Temporary
- or Permanent soft fonts when they are
- downloaded to the printer by JetForm.
-
- Temporary soft fonts are always compiled
- into the form (MDF) and will be loaded
- into the printer as "Temporary".
- Temporary fonts are deleted from the
- printer memory at the end of each print
- job.
-
- Permanent soft fonts are only compiled
- into the form and downloaded into the
- printer when you request it. Permanent
- soft fonts are not deleted from the
- printer memory at the end of the print
- job. To designate the fonts as either
- Temporary or Permanent, Click on the
- appropriate option button.
-
- Step 6 When all your selections have been made,
- Click on the OK command button to
- implement them. The new "logical
- cartridge" is created. The cartridge
- file can now be selected for inclusion
- in the configuration file by using the
- Select - Font Cartridges command.
-
-
- #Configuring Barcodes
- Configuring Barcodes
-
- JetForm-Design provides the capability to create
- and use barcodes on any of your forms. Barcodes
- can be included as part of your form design, or
- as data fields to be filled in at print time.
-
- The printer control file for the types of bar-
- coding is available for selection as a "font
- cartridge" during the normal configuration
- procedure. Once configured, you can select
- these "fonts" for Barcode Labels and Barcode
- Fields on your form.
-
- JetForm-Design prints barcodes as a series of
- vertical lines of different widths and does not
- require special barcode cartridges or soft
- fonts. JetForm-Design takes care of converting
- the values into the required set of lines for
- the specified barcode type and configuration
- information.
-
- The following types of bar codes are currently
- supported by JetForm-Design:
-
- - 2 of 5 Industrial
- - 2 of 5 Industrial with Checksum
- - 2 of 5 Interleaved
- - 2 of 5 Interleaved with Checksum
- - 2 of 5 Matrix
- - 2 of 5 Matrix with Checksum
- - 3 of 9 Large
- - 3 of 9 Medium
- - 3 of 9 Small
- - 3 of 9 Compressed
- - 3 of 9 with Checksum
- - Codabar
- - UPC-A
- - EAN-13
- - ZIP+4 (US Postal)
-
- At least one sample of each type of barcode is
- provided in the BARCODE "cartridge". These
- samples are ready to use on your forms.
-
- For all barcodes except UPC and EAN, the wide
- bars are set to be three times as wide as the
- narrow bars. Black bars and white bars are set
- to the same width in printer dots. For medium
- and low resolution barcodes, the barcodes
- generated will be satisfactory. (Module width
- greater than 0.009 inches - 3 dots or larger for
- 300 dpi printers). For UPC, bar widths are set
- to 1, 2, 3, and 4 times the specified module
- width.
-
- For high resolution barcodes, the module width
- is only 1 or 2 dots. In this case, the
- difference between the actual width of a black
- dot and a white dot becomes important. For
- example, the width of a black dot for most 300
- dpi printers is more than 50% greater than the
- nominal width (0.0033 inches). This means that
- a white narrow bar is much less wide than a
- black narrow bar. You can set black bar and
- white bar widths independently by modifying the
- BARCODE file.
-
- To add a new barcode to the file, use a text
- editor to access the BARCODE file. Enter each
- of the seven elements for the barcode. You can
- use an existing definition for that type of bar
- code as a guide. Note that the barcode name
- must begin with the word Barcode.
-
- Save the file when you have finished your
- changes.
-
- Note, you can create more than one barcode
- "Cartridge" file.
-
- To include the new bar code into your JetForm-
- Design configuration:
-
- Step 1 If the BARCODE "cartridge" is already
- configured, skip to Step 6. If the
- BARCODE "cartridge" is not configured,
- Click on Select in the Menu Bar.
-
- Step 2 Point to Font Cartridge in the pull-down
- menu, and Click. The Select Font
- Cartridges dialog box appears.
-
- Previous selections are designated with an
- asterisk. If you still want to use them,
- you must select them again.
-
- Step 3 Click on the desired font cartridges,
- including the BARCODE "cartridge" you
- just modified.
-
- Step 4 When all your selections have been made,
- Click on the OK command button to
- implement them.
-
- Step 5 Save the new configuration. Click on
- File in the Menu Bar. Point to Save in
- the pull-down menu, and Click.
-
- Step 6 Click on File in the Menu Bar. Point to
- Exit in the pull-down menu, and Click.
-
- You are returned to the Windows Program
- Manager.
-
-
