- The files contained in this subdirectory are the most
- recent versions of the Novell NetWare shell files as of
- August, 1991. Novell recommends that you use these
- files with NetWare v.2.1x and above.
-
- Files contained in this subdirectory:
-
- net3.com
- net4.com
- net5.com
- emsnet3.exe
- emsnet4.exe
- emsnet5.exe
- xmsnet3.exe
- xmsnet4.exe
- xmsnet5.exe
-
- Which file you should use depends on two things: the
- version of DOS that you are using and what kind of
- memory or RAM you have.
-
- The number, 3, 4, or 5, in the file name indicates the
- versions of DOS with which the file should be used.
- For example, if you are using DOS version 3.x, you
- should use a shell file that has a 3 in the name.
-
- The net, emsnet, and xmsnet part of the file name
- indicates the kind of memory into which the file will
- load. The net?.com files will load entirely into
- conventional memory. The emsnet?.exe files will load
- partially into conventional memory and the rest into
- expanded memory. The xmsnet?.exe files will load
- partially into conventional memory and the rest into
- extended memory. Since DOS users are always trying to
- conserve conventional memory, if you have either
- expanded or extended memory, you should use either
- emsnet?.exe or xmsnet?.exe.
-
- NOTE: If you are using DOS 5.0 and loading DOS high,
- DOS is being loaded into the first 64Kb of extended
- memory. XMSNET5.EXE tries to do the same thing.
- Therefore, if you want to continue to load DOS high and
- you also want to load your network shell high, you will
- have to use EMSNET5.EXE and configure some of your
- extended memory to act like expanded memory. You can
- do this using the DOS 5.0 EMM386.EXE program.
