  23.           This section describes the UUPC/extended
  24.
  25.                                                    configuration files.  It
  26.           assumes you have installed the programs and configured them as
  27.           described in Installation
  28.                        Installation
  29.                        Installation, page 15, and that you have access to
  30.           the Nutshell Handbook Using UUCP and Usenet.

  42.           Introduction
  43.           Introduction
  44.           Introduction
  45.
  46.           The UUPC.RC file provides the basic configuration information
  47.           required to initialize the various UUPC/extended programs.  It
  48.           provides information which applies to the entire local system.
  49.           It can also provide defaults for individual users.  These
  50.           defaults can then be overridden by the values in each user's
  51.           [userid].RC file29.
  52.
  53.           Blank lines and lines beginning with a pound sign (#) are
  54.           ignored.   Entries in the file are of the form:
  55.
  56.             prefix.keyword
  57.                    keyword
  58.                    keyword=value
  59.
  60.           If multiple lines exist with the same keyword , the last line is
  61.           used.   An exception to this rule is the options=
  62.                                                    options=
  63.                                                    options= line; if
  64.           multiple options=
  65.                    options=
  66.                    options= lines exist, the options are processed
  67.           individually and the last occurrence of each option is used.
  68.
  69.           The prefix is optional, and if present must be DOS, 32BITOS2 (for
  70.           OS/2 2.x), 16BITOS2 (for OS/2 1.x), WIN16(for Windows 3.x), or
  71.           WIN32(for Windows NT) and must be followed by a period. Case is
  72.           not significant for the prefix
  73.
  74.                                          or keyword
  75.                                             keyword
  76.                                             keyword.  If the prefix is
  77.           present, the line is only used if the current environment matches
  78.           the keyword.  This allows multiple lines in the same
  79.           configuration file for different environments, such as:
  80.
  81.             DOS.Editor=edit %s
  82.             OS2.Editor=epm %s
  83.
  84.
  85.
  86.           29Note that text fields which are supplied in the UUPC.RC file
  87.           cannot be cleared in the [userid].RC file.  For example, a user
  88.           cannot remove the organization field from her mail's headers if
  89.           the UUPC.RC supplied a default one.  However, the user could
  90.           change the organization name by adding an "Organization=[name]"
  91.           line to her [userid].RC file.

  106.             WIN16.Editor=notepad %s
  107.             WIN32.Editor=notepad %s
  108.
  109.           This allows the use of three different editors in four different
  110.           environments.  This could also be specified as:
  111.
  112.             Editor=notepad %s
  113.             DOS.Editor=edit %s
  114.             OS2.Editor=epm %s
  115.
  116.           In the latter example, the program notepad is the editor
  117.           specified for all environments, but it is superseded for both the
  118.           DOS and OS/2 environments.
  119.
  120.               Note:
  121.               Note:
  122.               Note: If the DOS versions of UUPC/extended programs are
  123.                     invoked under OS/2 or Windows NT, they will use the DOS
  124.                     environment keywords rather than attempting to
  125.                     determine the native environment.
  126.
  127.           The fields are described in the tables below as being of several
  128.           types, most of which are self-explanatory.  Of special note,
  129.           however, are fields described as tokens
  130.                                            tokens
  131.                                            tokens, path names
  132.                                                    path names

  136.           names
  137.           names
  138.           names.  Tokens are single words with no spaces.  Any tab or space
  139.           terminates the value.  As for path and file names:
  140.
  141.             Path and file names must be valid names under the host
  142.             operating system.
  143.
  144.             Path and file names without drive letters are presumed to
  145.             reside on the same drive as the UUPC/extended configuration
  146.             directory.
  147.
  148.             Slashes (/) and back slashes (\) are considered equivalent in
  149.             paths.  Back slashes are translated to slashes internally and
  150.             translated back when opening files and for external commands
  151.             such as editors.30
  152.
  153.             Relative path and file names (except for  those listed in the
  154.             next paragraph) are presumed to be relative to the
  155.             UUPC/extended configuration directory.

  164.             fields are assumed to be relative to the user's home

  166.                                      only
  167.                                      only these files may use the ~userid

  175.
  176.           30Forward slashes are not translated to backslashes for the
  177.           compress program invoked from RNEWS, which is technically a bug
  178.           but not a problem in practice since most compress programs are
  179.           derived from UNIX programs which don't care about the difference.

1844.           Modem files (.MDM) define the strings used to command a modem
1845.           when dialing out.   They allow commands always used with a
1846.           particular modem to be written once rather than being placed
1847.           everywhere they are used, and also allow different modems to be
1848.           used by changing only the modem file (or changing the reference
1849.           to the modem file in the SYSTEMS or UUPC.RC files).
  1850.
1851.           All strings defined in a modem file are standard scripts as
1852.           described in Error! Bookmark not defined.

1855.           exception of the dial prefix and dial suffix strings.  The dial
1856.           prefix and suffix strings are combined with the phone number
1857.           listed in the SYSTEMS file and sent as one string to the modem
1858.           when dialing out.  Most modems have behavior similar to one of
1859.           the sample modems, so minor changes to one of these files should
1860.           get you up and running.

1878.           There are several things to keep mind when writing a modem file,
1879.           especially for an error correcting modem.  Not all of the
1880.           following apply to all modems, but as a general rule:
  1881.
1882.           1.Initialize the modem from factory defaults as opposed to
1883.             simply resetting the modem.  Starting with factory defaults
1884.             allows the modem configuration to be shared between modems
1885.             that may not have been initialized the same way.
  1886.
  1887.               Note:

  1889.               Note: Do not
  1890.                        not

1892.                     to non-volatile RAM (often done with a AT&W command).
1893.                     This may confuse other programs which use the modem.
  1894.
1895.           2.Initialize the speaker to off.  (Typically ATM0)36
  1896.
1897.           3.Have the modem hang-up and reset to factory defaults when Data

2917.           describes how and when to communicate with them.
  2918.

3504.                                    files are transferred with no

3506.                                    improves transfer speeds.  Because no

3581.           this section.)  You might want to do this if one of your UUCP
3582.           neighbors has several phone lines, or several ways of logging in.
  3583.
3584.           If the SYSTEMS file has multiple lines for one remote system in
3585.           it, UUPC/extended uses the entries for the system in the order
3586.           they appear until it gets connects to the remote system and
3587.           completes the call.  The call will not complete if:
  3588.
3589.             The time field specifies an entry should not be used
  3590.
3591.             The modem fails to initialize
  3592.
3593.             Your system doesn't connect to the remote system because of a
3594.             busy signal or other dialing error
  3595.
3596.             The connection fails, because of trouble with the log-in
3597.             script or an excessive number of bad packets.
  3598.
3599.           In other words, the later lines in the SYSTEMS file for the
3600.           system will only be used if the first connection is not
  3601.           completely successful.
  3602.
3603.             Example: A system has SYSTEMS file entries for kewgate that
  3604.           looks like this:
  3605.
  3606.                kewgate Any TB2500 19200 1-617-555-4817 g gin:--gin: Utoscis
  3607.                ssword:--ssword: AppleJuice
  3608.                kewgate Any TB2500 19200 1-617-555-4817 g gin:--gin: Utoscis
  3609.                ssword:--ssword: AppleJuice
  3610.                kewgate Night HAYES24 2400 1-617-555-4817 v gin:--gin:
  3611.                Utoscis ssword:--ssword: AppleJuice
  3612.
3613.             In the example, kewgate will be dialed up to three times until
3614.             the call completes, twice using the TB2500 modem file and once
3615.             using the HAYES24 modem file.  Both TB2500 attempts are made
3616.             at any hour, but the HAYES24 is only attempted at night.
