  27.         Installation Instructions
  28. =======================================================================
  29. * Installation
  30.    Version 1.2 is being distributed as both a 16-bit Windows program and 
  31.    a 32-bit windows program.  If you are running Win3.x you must use the 
  32.    16-bit version even if you are running Win32s, because the 32-bit 
  33.    version makes use of 32-bit API calls not supported by Win32s.
  34.  
  35.    Both the 16-bit and 32-bit versions includes an installation program.
  36.    To install Netscape run the setup.exe program. The Netscape
  37.    installation program will install Netscape in a directory of your
  38.    choice, add a Netscape section to your WIN.INI file, and create a
  39.    Program Manager group and item.
  40.  
  41. * Initialization File    
  42.    The self extracting archive for the 16-bit Netscape Navigator contains 
  43.    the initialization file netscape.ini, which has entries for all of the 
  44.    values you can customize for the Netscape Navigator.
  45.  
  46.    The 32-bit Netscape Navigator stores preferences in the system registry.
  47.

  50.         MAPI Installation
  51. =======================================================================
  52. MAPI is now available in the 32bit version of the Navigator in Win 95
  53. for Mail and News.  This is only for Windows 95 and not NT.
  54.  
  55. As you know MS Exchange is a mail application, it stores and
  56. orginizes your mail.  Just like MS Mail, Netscape Internet Transport is
  57. a messaging service, but different than MS Mail, and it allows you to
  58. send and receive internet e-mail and post news messages in Netscape.
  59. Enabling the option "Use Exchange client for Mail and News" will not
  60. work correctly unless Netscape Internet Transport in Configured for
  61. MS Exchange app in Control Panel.
  62.  
  63. To configure MAPI, you will need to do the following if you don't have MS
  64. MAIL already configured.
  65.  
  66. 1) Adding Netscape Internet Transport
  67.    a) go to the Control Panel
  68.    b) double click on Mail/Fax icon
  69.    c) click on the Add button
  70.    d) Select Netscape Internet Transport, click on Next
  71.    at this point follow the Inbox Setup Wizard.
  72.    f) When you are done, click on Properties and make sure
  73.       that Netscape Internet Transport is list under Services.
  74.    
  75. To configure MAPI when you have MS MAIL already configured do the 
  76. following.

  78. 1) Adding Netscape Internet Transport to your existing Profile
  79.    a) go to the Control Panel
  80.    b) double click on Mail/Fax icon
  81.    c) click on the Add button
  82.    d) Select Netscape Internet Transport under the list of available
  83.       Information Services. Click on OK
  84.    e) Fill out the the forms for USERS and HOST. Click OK
  85.   
  86. 2) Adding Netscape Internet Transport to a new Profile
  87.    a) go to the Control Panel
  88.    b) double click on Mail/Fax icon
  89.    c) click on Show Profiles
  90.    d) click on Add
  91.    e) Select Netscape Internet Transport, click on Next
  92.    f) enter the Profile Name
  93.    at this point follow the Inbox Setup Wizard.
  94.    g) When you are done, click on Properties and make sure
  95.       that Netscape Internet Transport is list under Services.

  97. If you don't have MS Exchange already installed and you have already
  98. installed the Netscape Navigator, you will need to reinstall the 
  99. Navigator once you have installed MS Exchange.

  124. If you are running version 1.15 or below of Win32s, you will be unable to
  125. install the Netscape Navigator unless you upgrade to version 1.20 of Win32s
  126. or you remove Win32.
  127.  
  128. You can determine which version of Win32s you have in one of two ways:
  129.     - check the WIN32S.INI file in your Windows system directory
  130.     - if you are running Windows for Workgroups, select the WIN32S16.DLL 
  131.       file from the Windows system directory in File Manager. Then from 
  132.       the File menu, choose Properties. The Version line contains the 
  133.       major version and the build number.
  134.  
  135. To remove Win32s, do the following:
  136. 1. Remove the following line from the [386Enh] section in the SYSTEM.INI 
  137.    file:
  138.       device=<WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM>\win32s\w32s.386
  139.    where <WINDOWS> and <SYSTEM> are where the Windows and System
  140.    directories are, respectively.
  141. 2. Remove winmm16.dll from the following line from the [BOOT] section in 
  142.    the SYSTEM.INI file:
  143.       drivers=mmsystem.dll winmm16.dll
  144. 3. Delete the following files from the <WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM> subdirectory:
  145.       W32SYS.DLL
  146.       WIN32S16.DLL
  147.       WIN32S.INI
  148. 4. Delete all the files in the <WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM>\WIN32S subdirectory.
  149.    Then delete the subdirectory itself.
  150. 5. Restart Windows.
  151.  
  152. Here's how you can obtain Win32s version 1.2 which Microsoft refers
  153. to as application note PW1118:

  155.   To obtain this Application Note (number PW1118) and the files
  156.   included with it, download PW1118.EXE, a self-extracting file,
  157.   from the Microsoft Software Library (MSL) on the following services:

  194. The Netscape installer will overwrite existing OLE2 DLLs with the latest
  195. versions for US Windows. This will not affect 32-bit Windows. For 16-bit
  196. Windows, the only difference between the US and the Japanese versions are
  197. the internationalization of error strings.
  198.  
  199. Occasionally, the Japanese user may see an English language OLE2 error
  200. message after installing Netscape.
  201.  
  202. Currently, there are no Japanese versions available for the OLE2 DLLs.
  203. Netscape is working with Microsoft to make the Japanese version of the 
  204. OLE2 DLLs available.

  207.         Running Netscape
  208. =======================================================================
  209.  
  210. What do I need to run Netscape Navigator?
  211.  
  212. You must have a direct Internet connection before you can use Netscape.
  213. The ability to send and receive e-mail does not necessarily mean you can
  214. run Netscape. There are three requirements for Netscape Navigator 1.2:
  215.  
  216.     1. A direct Ethernet connection to the net, or a dialup
  217.        SLIP or PPP account from an Internet service provider.
  218.     2. TCP/IP stack
  219.     3. Netscape Navigator software
  220.  
  221. You can get a direct connection to the Internet through a service
  222. provider in your area.  You will need to get a SLIP or a PPP account
  223. from an Internet provider (for a dialup account).
  224.  
  225. When you have full Internet connectivity, you need to have a TCP/IP
  226. stack, dialer, and WINSOCK.DLL file.
  227.

  229.         Cannot Find WINSOCK.DLL
  230. =======================================================================
  231.  
  232. If you get the error message "Cannot find WINSOCK.DLL" when running 
  233. Netscape Navigator that means your computer is looking for the WINSOCK.DLL
  234. file, which is part of a winsock package (also includes dialer, 
  235. TCP/IP stack).
  236.  
  237. A winsock package makes it so that your PC can talk TCP/IP, which is 
  238. necessary for Netscape to run. See the "Running Netscape" section for 
  239. details on running the Netscape Navigator, and the "Obtaining a Winsock 
  240. Package" section for suggestions on obtaining a winsock package.

  243.         Obtaining a Winsock Package

  246. You can get the shareware winsock package, which is called Trumpet
  247. Winsock (v1.0) via ftp from
  248.

  251. Other winsock packages which we have tested without problems are:

  253.     FTP Software's PC/TCP
  254.     NetManage
  255.     Microsoft WFW (Wolverine)

  258. Implementation (general):
  259. Put the winsock in its own directory, for example, C:\WINSOCK,
  260. and include the directory in your DOS PATH statement.
  261.  
  262. Enter Windows, create a group in the Program Manager for all files
  263. with your winsock program.
  264.  
  265. Please be sure that the Netscape directory is in your path located
  266. in your autoexec.bat file. You may need to add:
  267. PATH=C:\(name of the directory where netscape is located)

  269. After making this change, save the file and reboot your computer.
