- SGS-THOMSON goes on-line with World Wide Web site
-
- SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics is providing a new service, 'ST on
- LINE', by making its catalogue, data sheets, and application
- notes available via the World Wide Web. This enables engineers to
- view, download or print any of the 28,882 pages of documents that
- are available, at any time of the day and from any place in the
- world.
-
- Carlo Ottaviani, Group VP, Corporate Communications, said: "This
- will be a great benefit to our customers. It allows them to view
- almost instantly the data sheets of all our products and search
- for the information they need. It is also a great boost for our
- environmental efforts. By publishing more electronic documents,
- such as this Web site, and our existing CD-ROM, our use of paper
- will diminish," he added.
-
- The Web site, located at http://www.st.com, contains more than
- 2,800 separate documents, and each is available in one of four
- file formats:- Adobe's PDF (compressed or uncompressed),
- compressed Interleaf's Printerleaf, and compressed PostScript.
- This enables the documents to be viewed by a significantly larger
- audience and places fewer constraints on the type of computer
- needed to access the site.
-
- Built into the service is a search facility that allows users to
- look for a product by family, by application, by part number, or
- by keyword. This, coupled with other features, allows easy
- navigation through the site, giving users quick access to the
- required information.
-
- The greatest effort has been put into optimizing the service to
- reduce the usage of network resources and thus the time necessary
- to navigate through the information available - frequently a
- source of great frustration to people using the web.
-
- As well as product information, the site includes a profile of
- and presentation on the company and a section for new
- announcements made by the company. The site will also be updated
- regularly to offer additional features and information as they
- become available.
