  1. OVERVIEW
  2. --------
  3.  
  4. ROMCAT provides a keyword oriented search of clipart on your CorelDRAW CD's.
  5. Optionally, thumbnails can be displayed.
  6.  
  7. To get users "up and running" as quickly as possible, a pre-built catalog of
  8. keywords from the D1 version of DRAW5 is provided. Users with DRAW3 or DRAW4
  9. or users wanting to display thumbnails can build a custom catalog unique to
  10. their needs.

  13. IF YOU'RE UPGRADING FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION OF ROMCAT
  14. -----------------------------------------------------
  15.  
  16. 1. Please note that ROMCAT's design is to "reopen the most recently used
  17.    catalog". If you install this upgrade in a new directory or you built a
  18.    custom catalog under a name other that CATALOG.ROM, ROMCAT will try to open
  19.    the prior catalog rather than the newer CATALOG.ROM provided with this
  20.    upgrade. A step in the installation section will remind you of this.
  21.  
  22. 2. This version of ROMCAT can read catalogs built by any previous release.
  23.  
  24. 3. Some keywords in DRAW5 are quite long. It is recommended that you switch the
  25.    screen layout to the "horizontal" view. Use the "Options" menu, "Screen
  26.    Layout" to do this. For new users of ROMCAT, the horizontal layout is now
  27.    the default.

  29.  
  30. INSTALLATION
  31. ------------
  32.  
  33. 1. Place the three files (ROMCAT.EXE, ROMCAT.HLP, and CLIPART.ROM) in a
  34.    directory of your choice, for example C:\CLPCAT.
  35.  
  36. 2. In the Windows program manager (or desktop manager you are using), add a
  37.    program item to a group of your choice. Specify:
  38.       Description:  Clipart File Finder
  39.       Command line: C:\CLPCAT\ROMCAT.EXE
  40.       Working directory: C:\CLPCAT
  41.    Substitute the actual drive + directory where you put the files in step 1.
  42.    Press OK.
  43.  
  44. 3. Launch the program. If you're upgrading ROMCAT from a prior version, look at
  45.    the message bar at the bottom of the window for the DOS file name of the
  46.    catalog file just opened. If it has opened an older catalog, you'll need to
  47.    select the "File" menu, "Open Catalog", and open the newer CATALOG.ROM file
  48.    provided with this upgrade.

  50. 4. If you're using a prior version of DRAW (3 or 4), or you want to use the
  51.    thumbnail display feature, you'll need to see the section "Rebuilding the
  52.    Catalog" to build a custom catalog.
  53.  
  54.  
  55. HOW TO SEARCH THE CATALOG
  56. -------------------------
  57.  
  58. 1. To search for a keyword, first make sure the "Keyword" button is turned on
  59.    in the "Search By..." box at the lower left corner of the screen. Then start
  60.    typing in the input field.
  61.  
  62.    As you type, the words in the box immediately below will scroll. When you
  63.    see the word you want, click on the word with the mouse (or hit the tab key
  64.    and move through the list with the arrow keys).
  65.  
  66.    As soon as a keyword is selected, a list of the related files appears in the
  67.    other list box. Each file shows the DOS file name, the volid of the disk
  68.    (which conveys Disk #1 or Disk #2 for DRAW4/5), and the directory path name
  69.    where the file can be found. IF YOU CANNOT SEE THE ENTIRE PATH NAME:
  70.    single-click on any file and the path name will be displayed in the message
  71.    bar at the bottom of the screen.

  73. 2. To locate personalities and portraits, start by typing the person's first
  74.    name. Most (or all) the people clipart files have their keyword references
  75.    in first + last name order.
  76.  
  77. 3. To locate a file using the thumbnails in the clipart book, first click on
  78.    the "File Name" button in the "Search By..." box. Then type the name
  79.    printed below the thumbnail. Note that in the book the lower case L's and
  80.    1's look the same. Once the thumbnail is entered, the matching file names
  81.    will show in the filename listbox. Since this is a generalized file finder,
  82.    files with extensions other than .CDR (and .CMX in DRAW5) may show, so pick
  83.    the file with the correct extension.

  85. 4. If you still haven't found what your looking for, there is a facility to do
  86.    a global search for a series of characters occurring anywhere within a
  87.    keyword or file name. Example: Suppose you're looking for a portrait of Bono,
  88.    but there is no keyword that starts with "Bono". Pull down the Options menu
  89.    and select Global Search, type Bono, and press enter. Both the keyword and
  90.    file name indices will be searched and all occurrences of Bono will be shown.

  93. ONCE YOU'VE FOUND YOUR CLIPART AND WANT TO IMPORT IT
  94. ----------------------------------------------------

  96. This procedure applies to importing files with an extensions of .CDR and .CMX:
  97.  
  98. 1. With a list of files showing in the list box, single click on the item you
  99.    wish to import.
  100.  
  101. 2. Pull down the options menu and click on "Import Selected Drawing".
  102.  
  103. 3. If ROMCAT asks you to provide the drive letter where the corresponding disk
  104.    is mounted, mount this disk and if necessary change the drive letter, then
  105.    press "Continue Launch".
  106.  
  107. 4. The clipart file will be imported into the current drawing. (If CorelDRAW is
  108.    not already running, it will be started).
  109.

  111. REBUILDING THE CATALOG
  112. ----------------------
  113.  
  114. Use this procedure to build a catalog for a different version of DRAW or if
  115. you want the thumbnail display feature. You can build your catalog for all
  116. directories or just "selected" directories that are of interest to you.
  117.  
  118. Before proceeding, consider:
  119.  
  120.    a) The current ROMCAT scans DRAW files created under DRAW versions 1 thru 5
  121.       only.
  122.  
  123.    b) Typical disk space requirements for a full catalog are:
  124.  
  125.                                                   DRAW3  DRAW4  DRAW5
  126.       Full catalog with only keywords             156KB  225KB  328KB
  127.       Full catalog with keywords and thumbnails    13MB   17MB   25MB
  128.  
  129.       If you use a compressed disk (Doublespace, Stacker, etc.) multiply the
  130.       above estimate by 1.5 and use the resulting value when checking the
  131.       projected free space on the drive. If you use the "selected directories"
  132.       feature you can reduce the space requirement.
  133.  
  134.    c) Typical catalog build times using a double-spin CD-ROM drive: 30 minutes
  135.       for the DRAW3 CD, 45 minutes for DRAW4, and 60 minutes for DRAW5. If you
  136.       use the "selected directories" feature you can reduce the run time.
  137.  
  138.    d) All CD's to be placed in a single catalog must be processed during a
  139.       single catalog build run.
  140.  
  141.    e) The process of sorting and cross referencing takes a considerable amount
  142.       of memory. On a 4MB or smaller system, run time will likely increase.
  143.  
  144. Here's the steps for building your own catalog:
  145.  
  146. 1. Pull down the File menu and select "Build New Catalog."
  147.  
  148. 2. You will be prompted to enter a title. Enter something like "Clipart File
  149.    Finder with Thumbnails" or just leave it blank.
  150.  
  151. 3. ROMCAT will prompt for a DOS file name for the new catalog to be built.
  152.    Enter a name of your choice. You will probably NOT want to overwrite the
  153.    original CLIPART.ROM file.
  154.  
  155. 4. ROMCAT will ask for the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive. Mount a CD in the
  156.    drive, wait for the drive to come ready.
  157.  
  158. 5. If you wish to select the clipart directories to be scanned, select the
  159.    "Selected Directories" from the drop-down lists. The text on the lefthand
  160.    pushbutton will change from "Begin Scanning Disk" to "Build Directory
  161.    Select/Exclude List". Press this button and follow the instructions on the
  162.    next screen to select the directories to be scanned.
  163.  
  164. 6. Click on "Begin Scanning Disk". While reading the clipart drawing files,
  165.    the program will display its progress as a percent complete.
  166.  
  167. 7. When scanning completes, a statistics box will be displayed. At this point
  168.    you have the option to "Read Another Disk" or indicate you are "Finished
  169.    Reading Disks". The process repeats at step 4 if you elect to read another
  170.    disk.

  172. 8. A number of search tables will be built, sorted, and written to disk.
  173.    When the process completes, the new catalog will be opened you may begin
  174.    your search requests. If you've included thumbnails in your catalog, the
  175.    thumbnail is displayed when a file is selected in the filename list box.
  176.  
  177. ROMCAT will remember the "last opened catalog file," so you will come back to
  178. your new catalog the next time you launch the program.

  181. NOTE
  182. ----
  183.  
  184. Three state map files, MIMAP (Michigan), MNMAP (Minnesota), and MSMAP
  185. (Mississippi) have their keywords transposed. This problem has existed in the
  186. .CDR versions of the files in DRAW3 and DRAW4, and now also in the .CMX
  187. equivalents in DRAW5. When doing searches, these files will not list under the
  188. expected states. This is not a bug in ROMCAT.
