  10. Welcome to Step-Up Program Manager! This document tells you 
  11. everything you need to know to get up and running as quickly as
  12. possible.

  26. We designed Step-Up Program Manager to be especially easy to learn and
  27. use.  We started with the skills you already have from using Windows'
  28. Program Manager and added dozens of enhancements that you'll
  29. certainly find indispensable.

  31. After installation, some of our new features are immediately evident,
  32. but you'll notice that Step-Up Program Manager still looks nearly
  33. identical to Windows Program Manager.  We've done this intentionally
  34. to allow you the opportunity to return to work without delay.  
  35. Everything you know how to do with Windows Program Manager works the
  36. same in Step-Up Program Manager.  All menus, keystrokes and groups
  37. are unchanged, just enhanced with dozens of new features!

  48. evaluation period.  We also hope that you'll like Step-Up Program
  49. Manager and will pass it on.  We encourage you to build an install

  88. This version of Step-Up Program Manager allows you to purchase the
  89. product using your modem to transmit your credit card information to
  90. Step-Up Software.  The call is free in the US and takes just a few moments. 
  91. We'll even configure your modem for you.  All you have to do is fill
  92. in your name, address and card info and we'll handle the rest.  We
  93. accept VISA, MasterCard and American Express Cards. If you don't have

  99.                     Building an Install Disk
  100.                     ------------------------

  102. You'll need a formatted, blank diskette - either a 1.2Mb 5.25" or a
  103. 1.44Mb 3.5" diskette will do.  Place the disk in drive A (or B) and
  104. run "STEPUP.EXE A:"  All the files that make up Step-Up Program
  105. Manager will be extracted from STEPUP.EXE and copied to your
  106. diskette.

  113. Nothing could be simpler!
  114. 1. Insert the Step-Up Program Manager installation disk in drive A:
  115. 2. From Windows Program Manager's File menu, select Run.
  116. 3. Type A:INSTALL and press Enter (or click on "OK")
  117. 4. Follow the instructions on the screen (some notes and hints follow)
  118.  
  119. The installation program asks you one question -- "Do you want to make
  120. Step-Up Program Manager your Windows shell?"  If you don't already
  121. know what your Windows Shell is, it's the program that Windows runs
  122. first every time it starts.  The default program that Windows runs at
  123. startup is Windows' Program Manager.  By checking the box next to this
  124. question, you are telling Windows to use Step-Up Program Manager in
  125. place of Windows Program Manager as your shell.  We recommend that
  126. you install Step-Up Program Manager as your Windows shell.

  128. Installation should take about one minute (or less).  When completed, 
  129. you must restart Windows so that the changes you've made to your
  130. system during the installation of Step-Up Program Manager can take
  131. effect.  If Step-Up Program Manager is your new Windows shell, you'll
  132. see it where Windows Program Manager used to be.

  157. You'll find that the on-line help is an excellent source of
  158. information for learning about the new features found in Step-Up
  159. Program Manager.  To help you on your Quick Start, we'll mention a
  160. few of our favorite features that you might want to try right away.

  167. Program Modes - Step-Up Program Manager has three different styles
  168. that really make it unique.  From the Options menu, select Mode.  Try
  169. each of the three (Program Manager, Desktop and SwitchBoard) to see
  170. which one you like best.

  172. Sort Groups - A real time saver if you have more than a few groups. 
  173. Click the a/z button on the Toolbar to sort the active group or use
  174. the View Window As dialog from the Window menu to sort all your
  175. groups.
  176.  
  177. Change group icons - Select one of several icons we provide or browse
  178. for any other icon you'd like.
  179.  
  180. Display Styles - Display any group as Icons, a List or as a Toolbox. 
  181. Size the icons to your liking from very small to very large.  Select
  182. View Window As from the Window menu.  Groups within groups - If you
  183. have more than just a few groups, consider organizing them by placing
  184. groups within other groups.  If you have a group that is getting
  185. especially large, break it up by creating new sub-groups.  For
  186. example, make sub-groups of your Games group for each category of
  187. game you have -- like "Card Games", "Action Games", "Board Games", 
  188. etc.

  190. Desktop Buttons - Drag any program item or any file from File Manager
  191. to the Desktop to create a button for that application or file.  This
  192. is a great place for the programs and files you use the most.

  194. Alarms - Don't be late for another meeting! Select Alarms from the
  195. Options menu and fill in the details.  You can also set a program to
  196. run (like your backup) while you're away.
  197.  
  198. System Resource Monitor - Avoid a common cause of system crashes - low
  199. system resources.  You'll be notified when your resources drop below
  200. a critical level (that you can set) and can take action to lower the
  201. strain before a problem comes up.

  203. Right Mouse Button - You may have already noticed that a right mouse
  204. click will show you a menu of options that apply to the item where
  205. you've clicked.  It's great for easy access to common commands and
  206. really reduces the "mileage" on your mouse.

  215.                    QUESTIONS AND TROUBLE  SHOOTING

  218. Make sure you're using the latest version of Step-Up Program Manager.
  219. The latest versions are always available on America Online, Compuserve
  220. and Ziffnet (prodigy).

  223. Q: I had to install again and keep seeing the "Purchase Now"
  224.    screen when I start windows.  How do I make this go away?
  225. A: Select "Purchase Now" from the sign-on dialog and then select
  226.    "Voice".  Enter your name and registration data there.

  228. Q: Can I use the same registered version on my home and work computers?
  229. A: Yes, provided that the same registered copy is not in use simultaneously
  230.    by more than one person.

  232. Q: I deleted the Step-Up files and now I can't get back into Windows. Help!
  233. A: If you don't use our uninstall utility to remove Step-Up Program 
  234.     Manager, you'll have to make a change to one line of your SYSTEM.INI
  235.     file so that windows will know that you don't want to use Step-Up
  236.     Program Manager as your Windows shell.
  237.    To make sure that windows program manager has been restored as your shell:
  238.    1. From a DOS prompt, go to your windows directory
  239.       "CD \WINDOWS"
  240.    2. Edit your windows system initialization file.
  241.       "EDIT SYSTEM.INI"
  242.    3. Look for a line that begins with "shell=" (It's usually in the
  243.       first dozen lines)
  244.    4. Make sure that line reads "shell=progman.exe".  If it doesn't,
  245.       change it.  This line tells windows which program to use as
  246.       your system shell.
  247.    5. Save the file and exit the editor.
  248.    6. Start windows.

  251. Q: How do I uninstall manually?
  252. A: Follow the procedure outlined above to restore program manager as your
  253.    shell and then do the following.
  254.    1. Delete all files in the C:\STEPUP directory (if you installed to
  255.       a directory other than c:\stepup, delete the files in it.)
  256.    2. Remove the C:\STEPUP directory.
  257.    3. Delete the following files from your windows directory:
  258.          PMCONTRL.DLL  PMSCROLL.DLL
  259.          PPGROUPS.DLL  PMTOOL.DLL
  260.          PPCOMMON.DLL  
  261.    4. Delete the following files from your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory:
  262.          WHINNY.WAV  FOGHORN.WAV
  263.          DIVE.WAV    CUCKOO.WAV
