This is the HQ-FAX help file (HQFAX.HLP). Copyright (c) 1995 by HTF Consulting.
You can get a hard copy of this file by entering "Print hqfax.hlp".

First time users are encouraged to study and excercise the tutorial in the
First Time Use section of the Readme file "Readme.HQF".
When you contact us for technical support, we will be happy to assist you,
but we will want to know right away how far you got with the tutorial.

======================== HQ-FAX Function Keys ================================
<F1> entered with the cursor in the file name field or the FONT field or
     the OVERLAY CUSTOM FORM field will produce a list of available files of
     that type. The file name field must have JUST a directory in it, not a
     file name.  EX: C:\HQFAX
<F1> entered with the cursor anywhere else will display this help file.
<Shift><F1> scrolls the readme file (README.HQF) for browsing.

<F2>  indicates you are ready to proceed with the conversion and view or send.
<F3>  allows you to verify your input fields before proceding.
<F7>  indicates that you wish to prepare and/or send a cover sheet.
<F8>  lets you do product registration and ordering.
<F9>  (not shown on the screen) restores the latest screen data from disk.
<F10> saves the current screen data to disk. Data will NOT be saved otherwise!
<ESC> exits the program.

============================== FIELD INPUTS =================================
Registration Key:
Enter your 7-digit Registration Key if you are a registered user.

INPUT from:
Print Capture of LPTx:
Enter a 1, 2 or 3 in place of the x to capture print data sent to the corres-
ponding printer port.  This data will be stored in the file "C:\LPTxFILE.ECL"
before being converted to FAX. (x = 1,2,3).  Print Capture will be active for
100 seconds before the first byte of printer output and for 10 seconds after
the last byte.  Then normal printing will be restored. This data must be in
Epson Control Language format or be regular ASCII text.  You may capture a DOS
Print-Scrn of a text-based screen. When this field is entered, the following
field is ignored. This or the following field is REQUIRED.

*OR* FILE:
Enter the path and name of an Epson Control Language file which you have
printed to disk from your word processor. For example, \wordstar\myfile for
MYFILE.ECL created with Wordstar. You may override the ".ECL" file extension,
but be sure that the file exists. You may also use a text file. This or the
previous field is REQUIRED.

OUTPUT to:
Image file(s):
Enter the directory and the first name of the file to contain the FAX images.
Use an '*' (the default) to indicate the same first name as on the input file.
This field is REQUIRED.

FORMAT for:
Modem class // Modem software // Other graphic type:
This required field indicates the format of the FAX-ready output file as well
as the software to be employed in transmitting a FAX. The possible entries are:

00 (Unformatted)
   The output file will be unformatted Huffman compressed data. If you wish to
   transmit this file you must customize the XXSEND.BAT file to your needs.
AD (Auto Detect)
   The FAX-ready file will be in HQ-FAX proprietary format, with a file
   extension of ".APF".  HQ-FAX proprietary software will transmit the file(s).
   This entry is appropriate when you don't know what type of modem you have
   and your FAX modem software isn't one with which HQ-FAX interfaces.
BF (BITFAX)
   The FAX-ready file will be in BITFAX format with a file extension of ".BFX".
   BITFAX software will be employed to transmit the file(s). The BITFAX direct-
   ory must be in your path.
C1 (Class 1)
   The FAX-ready file will be in HQ-FAX proprietary format. HQ-FAX proprietary
   software will transmit the file(s). This entry is appropriate when you have
   a class 1 FAX modem and your FAX modem software isn't one with which HQ-FAX
   interfaces.
C2 (Class 2)
   The FAX-ready file will be in HQ-FAX proprietary format. HQ-FAX proprietary
   software will transmit the file(s). This entry is appropriate when you have
   a class 2 FAX modem and your FAX modem software isn't one with which HQ-FAX
   interfaces.
CA (Communication Application Specification or CAS)
   The FAX-ready file will be in HQ-FAX proprietary format. HQ-FAX proprietary
   software will transmit the file(s). This entry is appropriate when you have
   a CAS FAX modem and your FAX modem software isn't one with which HQ-FAX
   interfaces.
CP (Complete PC)
   The FAX-ready file will be in Complete PC format with a file extension of
   ".0xx". The Complete PC software will be employed to transmit the file(s).
   The Complete PC directory must be in your path.
DC (DCX)
   The output file will be in DCX (multi-page PCX format). If you wish to
   transmit this file you must customize the XXSEND.BAT file to your needs.
FR (Frecom)
   The FAX-ready file will be in Frecom FAX96 format with a file extension of
   ".0xx". Frecom FAX96 PC software will be employed to transmit the file(s).
   The FRECOM directory must be in your path.
IN (INTEL)
   See CA above.
PC (PCX)
   The output file(s) will be in PCX format, with a file extension of ".0xx".
   If you wish to transmit this file you must customize the XXSEND.BAT file to
   your needs.
QL (Quick-Link)
   The FAX-ready file will be in Quick-Link format with a file extension of
   ".QFX". Quick-Link software will be employed to transmit the file(s). The
   QL2FAX directory must be in your path.
TB (TIFF Class B)
   The output file will be in TIFF class B format,  with a file extension of
   ".TIF". If you wish to transmit this file you must customize the XXSEND.BAT
   file to your needs.
TF (TIFF Class F)
   The output file will be in TIFF class F format, with a file extension of
   ".TIF".  If you wish to transmit this file you must customize the XXSEND.BAT
   file to your needs.
TH (TIFF Class B Huffman Encoding)
   The output file will be in TIFF class B format with Huffman encoding, with a
   file extension of ".TIF".  If you wish to transmit this file you must
   customize the XXSEND.BAT file to your needs.
TU (TIFF Class B Uncompressed)
   The output file will be in TIFF class B format uncompressed, with a file
   extension of ".TIF".  If you wish to transmit this file you must customize
   the the XXSEND.BAT file to your needs.
This field is REQUIRED.

VIEW files:
CGA & Mono-chrome users will not be able to view image files with ver. 3.3 of
HQFAX.  Please look on our Word Wide Web Home Page for HQFAX ver. 4.0 or an
update to the program VIEWFAX3.exe.
Enter 'y', 'p' or 't'. Either 'y' or 't' present a "text view" of the image
that is convenient for reading. A 'p' presents a wide (pixel-for-pixel) view.
This field is OPTIONAL.

COMM PORT:
Enter 1, 2, 3 or 4 to identify the com port to which your FAX modem is connect-
ed. This field is REQUIRED for output formats AD, C1, C2, CA and IN only. It is
ignored otherwise.  If you enter a 0 here, the send program will detect the
modem's comm port for you.

SEND TO:
Enter the complete string of digits that you wish to be dialed. This may
include a leading '9' or '1' or a long distance dialing prefix, whatever is
required and the FAX modem software allows. See the section on sending FAXes
in the HQ-FAX Users Manual as well as your modem documentation. This field is
REQUIRED to send a FAX.

SEND OPTNS:
If you are using Bitfax, The Complete PC, Frecom or Quick-Link software, enter
any send command options provided by your modem software such as a recipient
list or a schedule time. See your modem software documentation. If HQ-FAX prop-
rietary software will be used to transmit the FAX (output format is AD, C1, C2,
CA or IN) then the following options are available:
/IDxxxxxxxxxxx   Set the Station ID of the sending FAX station
/IRQx            Set Interrupt ReQuest Line (x = 1-9)
/BDxxxxxxx       Set the port baud rate (4800, 7200, 9600, 19200 the default)
/LOxxxxxx        Set the low baud rate (4800, 7200, 9600, 19200 the default)
/XBPSxxxxxxx     Set the FAX bit per second rate (2400, 4800, 7200, 9600 the
                 default, 12000, 14400)
/MIxxxxxxxxxx    Set a modem initialization string
/HI              Use highest possible bit rate and ECM (Error Correcting Mode)
                 if available.
/TIxxxxxxxxxxxx  Set sender title: (Registered users only!)
No scheduling or broadcasting facilities are available with HQ-FAX 3.1.
This field is OPTIONAL.

======================== SPECIAL PROCESSING OPTIONS =========================
ALL of these fields are OPTIONAL.

DEFAULT (draft) FONT:
Enter the name of your chosen default font. This font will only replace the
draft font. You must have another mono-spaced font to replace the default of
COORIER. Any font selected inside the ECL file overrides this choice.

OVERLAY CUSTOM FORM:
Enter the name of a PCX file which you wish to use as a pre-printed form or
custom stationary. A leading '!' indicates you wish the PCX file to be used
in reverse-video.

RESOLUTION:
Enter (S) for standard resolution or retain the default of (F)ine. This field
refers to the image quality of the Group 3 FAX images. Standard resolution is
200 dpi (dots per inch) horizontally by 100 dpi vertically. Fine resolution
is 200 by 200 dpi. Fine resolution FAXes require about twice as long to send.
Standard resolution is not suitable for Letter-Quality FAXes.

PAGE RANGE:
Enter a page range that you want converted, for example 1 to 10 for the first
ten pages.

PAGE DIMENSIONS:
Enter the page size you wish to use. The default "NA" is 1728 by 2156 dpi
(dots per inch). A3 is 2432 by 3307 dpi, A4 is 1728 by 2340 dpi and B4 is 2048
by 2780 dpi. All dimension are expressed in the Group 3 FAX fine resolution of
200 by 200 dpi.

(C)ontiguous image or (M)any files:
Enter 'c' to produce one long image without page breaks. Enter 'm' to produce
many files (one per page).  The default (blank) produces all pages in one file.

============================ ADVANCED OPTIONS ===============================
ALL of these fields are OPTIONAL.

PRODUCE LANDSCAPE MODE:
If this option is available, enter 'y' to indicate that the ECL file contains
landscape mode image(s). These image(s) will be rotated 90 degrees before
being FAXed.  This feature will require temporary disk space of about 500K
per page for an uncompressed intermediate file.

REVERSE_VIDEO INDICATOR:
Enter a special character to be interpreted as toggling reverse-video on and
off from inside the ECL file.  The default is the ~ character.

Dbl-Print --> Rvrs-Video:
Enter 'y' to have double-print control codes in the ECL file converted to
reverse-video, otherwise boldface is used to implement double-print.

CONVERT ECL GRAPHICS TO 200DPI:
Entering a 'y' here indicates that you wish to have graphics within your
document expanded by 10% to accomodate FAX resolution versus printing to an
Epson printer. This is the default. If your word processor is painting the
page purely in graphics, you will want to override this feature by entering
an 'n'. Some experimenting may be necessary.

VIEW CONVERSION PROCEDURE:
This feature is not available to unregistered users. See the User Manual for
details.
