Paul's instrument is a German made Mittenwald 'cello made around 1890. It is tuned an octave higher than a double bass (i.e. in fourths down from G) and is fitted with an underwood pick-up so that the sound can be electronically processed to alter the tonality. The term Meta comes from an idea by Bertrand Russell that to analyse a language, you need develop a new language 'outside' of the language you wish to describe. The CD - Flight Through Cloudless Sky - is the result of Paul's exploration of this concept with regard to music. Truly a voyage of musical discovery.
The CD consists of a total of fourteen pieces with lengths ranging from four minutes down to 45 seconds, which are all Paul's compositions bar one piece by Kenny Wheeler (Consolation). The pieces were all recorded 'live' to DAT in a single session in St Agnes Church, London England during May 1994 and then edited together using a SADiE hard disk editor to produce the final master, ensuring that the full digital quality was maintained throughout the production chain.
