2.1 providing you don't choose to install it directly over the top of these products. Just in case there are any problems, we recommend that you save all your work to packages and backup your image files to avoid any possibility of your losing work.
\par Dolphin 4.x adopts the Microsoft Windows Installer as the mechanism for installation onto target machines. The Windows Installer is part of the Microsoft Zero Administration Windows (ZAW) initiative and is intended to reduce the maintenance require
d when installing and uninstall in applications from Windows operating systems. Hopefully, as Windows Installer based applications become more prevalent this will reduce the incidences of \'93DLL-Hell\'94 that have plagued application setups in the past.

\par Following a successful installation, you will find that Dolphin development system files have been installed into the following directories:

\par As mentioned above, you can choose to keep your working image in the }{\i\f0\lang2057\langfe1033\langnp2057 My Documents\\Dolphin Smalltalk 4.0 }{\f0\lang2057\langfe1033\langnp2057 folder or you can move to another
directory entirely. The point to remember about this is that your image is effectively a \'93workspace\'94 file (not in the Smalltalk sense) for your development and that any package hierarchy that you define will be referenced relative to this image.
\par
\par You'll notice that with this version of Dolphin you do not automatically get a }{\i\f0\lang2057\langfe1033\langnp2057 Package }{\f0\lang2057\langfe1033\langnp2057 and}{\i\f0\lang2057\langfe1033\langnp2057 Samples}{\f0\lang2057\langfe1033\langnp2057
directory hierarchy created on disk following installation. All of the packages required for your version of Dolphin are supplied pre-installed in the image. Should
you wish to save these packages to disk then you can do so (for example, the Package Browser has a }{\i\f0\lang2057\langfe1033\langnp2057 Package/Save All}{\f0\lang2057\langfe1033\langnp2057
menu command) and they will be saved into a hierarchy within the directory where your image is located.
\par
\par With this new way of working it pr
obably makes sense to only maintain one image per directory (apart from backup copies) so that when you start a new project, you do so in an entirely new directory tree. This is only a recommendation, of course, and you are free to adopt any style of work
ing that suits your methods of development.
\par }\pard\plain \s1\ql \li0\ri0\sb240\sa60\keepn\nowidctlpar\faauto\outlinelevel0\rin0\lin0\itap0 \f1\fs24\lang1033\langfe1033\cgrid\langnp1033\langfenp1033 {\b\fs28\lang2057\langfe1033\kerning28\langnp2057 Shipping Applications with the Dolphin Runtime
\par }{\i\fs22\lang2057\langfe1033\kerning28\langnp2057 Applies to Dolphin Professional Users Only
\par Another reason for using the Windows Installer mechanism is that it now becomes possible to ship "partial installations" as }{\i\f0\lang2057\langfe1033\langnp2057 merge-module (.msm)}{\f0\lang2057\langfe1033\langnp2057
files. You will find a merge module for the Dolphin Runtime system in the Object Arts downloads library (http://www.object-arts.com/Downloads.htm) which you will be able to import if you use a Microsoft Windows Installer based setup p
rogram to package your Dolphin applications for release. This will save you having to be concerned with the complexities of installing and registering the various Dolphin runtime DLLs.
\par
\par If you do not intend to use a Windows Installer compliant setup mechan
ism then we will also be supplying a separate executable capable of installing the Dolphin runtime components. You should be able to invoke this executable as part of your setup program.
