  10. To use the new drive, you must change your BIOS settings.  Use these customized
  11. instructions as a checklist, checking off each step as you complete it.

  14. Booting To Your New Hard Drive
  15.  
  16. Your original boot partition has been copied to your new hard drive.  If you
  17. are going to boot to your new drive you will have to perform one of the
  18. following:
  19.  
  20.    * Follow the instructions below for information on swapping your new
  21.      drive with your original boot drive.
  22.    * If your BIOS supports booting to drives other then the primary master
  23.      drive, you can set the BIOS to boot to your new drive.  See your BIOS
  24.      documentation for instructions on how to do this.

  36. DRIVE PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS
  37.  
  38. For easy installation, use these customized instructions as a checklist, 
  39. checking off each step as you complete it. 
  40.  
  41. The following instructions have been customized for your system.  In addition 
  42. to these instructions, you may need to refer to your computer owner's manual 
  43. for information specific to your system, such as System Setup. 
  44.  
  45. [FORWARD2]
  46. FOLLOW THESE IMPORTANT PRECAUTIONS:
  47. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  48.    * Handle the disk drive ONLY by its frame.  NEVER touch the connectors or 
  49.      any part of the circuit board.
  50.    * DO NOT apply pressure or attach labels to the circuit board or top cover.
  51.    * ALWAYS turn your computer off before beginning the installation and when 
  52.      adding, removing or changing jumpers on any drive.
  53.    * Although switched off, ALWAYS keep your computer plugged into an 
  54.      electrical outlet with an earth ground.  This minimizes the possibility of 
  55.      damage from static discharge.
  56.    * Wear a grounded wrist strap if possible.  Attach the wrist strap to the 
  57.      metal chassis of your computer.  DO NOT install in areas with 
  58.      static-inducing carpets.
  59.    * Back up the disk drive's data before starting.  For additional information
  60.      regarding back-up solutions, visit the Seagate's web site at: 
  61.      http://www.seagate.com
  62.    * ALWAYS note the orientation of all cables before disconnecting them.  Some 
  63.      cables can be reattached in positions that don't make a proper 
  64.      connection.
  65.    * You may need a Phillips screwdriver, needle-nose pliers and an unused 
  66.      power connector.

  70. ( ) RUNNING THE SYSTEM SETUP PROGRAM 
  71.  
  72. To change your computers settings, you must enter the 'Setup' or 'CMOS Setup'
  73. program of your computer and change the information.  There are several ways
  74. to enter the setup, depending on your computer make and model.  Usually on the
  75. initial power up, there will be a message stating 'Press DEL to enter Setup' or
  76. something similar.  It may be necessary to press the key quickly, as the boot
  77. sequence may continue on momentarily. 
  78.  
  79. Check your computer or motherboard manual for the correct key combination, or
  80. look for one of the following phrases or something similar with the word 
  81. 'Setup' in it. 
  82.  
  83. - Hit DEL if you want to run Setup 
  84. - Press F1 to enter Setup 
  85. - Press F2 to enter Setup 
  86. - Press and hold CTRL-ALT-ESC to begin System Setup 
  87. - To enter setup: Boot to a DOS prompt, and press CTRL-ALT-Enter 
  88. - Press CTRL-ALT-S to enter Setup 
  89.  
  90. If you cannot determine how to enter the System Setup program, consult your 
  91. computer's manual or contact the manufacturer.

  94. ( ) ENABLING THE SECONDARY CONTROLLER

  96. After swapping drives you must enable the secondary controller in order to use
  97. the partitions on the secondary drive.  Refer to the following instructions for
  98. information about entering the System Setup program.

  101. RUNNING THE SYSTEM SETUP PROGRAM 
  102.  
  103. NOTE: Some BIOSes will not allow you to change the settings for your new drive
  104. until after it is installed.  If your system does not allow you to configure
  105. settings until after your drive is installed, refer to this section after you 
  106. have installed your drive.

  108. ( ) Enter system setup (CMOS). 
  109.  
  110.    * Reboot your computer. 
  111.    * Watch the screen - as your computer starts up - for a message describing how to
  112.      run the System Setup program (also called BIOS or CMOS setup).  This is usually
  113.      done by pressing the DELETE, ESC or F1 keys. 
  114.    * Press the appropriate key to enter the System Setup program. 
  115.  
  116. NOTE: If you cannot determine the proper key sequence to enter System Setup,
  117. refer to your computer owner's manual or call your computer manufacturer for
  118. assistance.

  141. two devices on an ATA channel/cable, both devices must use either Cable Select 
  142. or Master/Slave settings.  The instructions below describe using the 
  143. Master/Slave jumpers, however, you can use Cable Select if you so desire.

  194. TROUBLESHOOTING 
  195.    
  196. System Lockup Information 
  197.  
  198. If you have added a new drive and your system locks up at boot time (right
  199. after turning the power on), or locks up during System Setup, there are several
  200. possible causes. 
  201.  
  202. If using parallel ATA, verify that the 40-pin ribbon cable is properly attached, 
  203. making sure that pin 1 on the cable matches pin 1 on the drive. 
  204.

  206. Next, if your new drive is larger than 33.8GB, you may have an Award 4.51 BIOS
  207. with a 33.8GB limitation that causes the system to hang during the Power On
  208. Self Test (POST). 
  209.  
  210. The best solution is to obtain a BIOS upgrade from your computer manufacturer
  211. to support drives greater than 33.8GB. 
  212.  
  213. Another solution for this 33.8GB limitation is to use the DiscWizard
  214. utility to issue a command to the drive that will make it report a size of 33.8GB
  215. or less.  This will alleviate the hang during POST and allow the system to boot.
  216. Using this method, DiscWizard will still be able to install the drive to the
  217. full capacity using the Dynamic Drive Overlay.
  218.  
  219. To implement this solution, use the following instructions. 
  220. 1. Restart your computer and enter the System Setup program.  Change the 
  221.    setting for your new drive to "NONE".  Save the settings, exit the System 
  222.    Setup program and power down your computer.
  223. 2. Insert your DiscWizard bootable diskette and power up your computer.
  224. 3. From the main menu, select Utilities.
  225. 4. Select the "Set Drive Size" utility.  Then your new drive.
  226. 5. Follow the on-screen instructions to set the drive size.
  227. 6. When you are finished setting the drive size, reboot your computer.  Enter 
  228.    the System Setup program and set the drive type to "AUTO".  Save the 
  229.    settings and exit the System Setup program.
  230.  
  231. After following the instructions, restart your system with the
  232. DiscWizard Diskette.
  233.  
  234. [SYSTEMLOCKUP2] 
  235. If your new drive is over 32GB, and other solutions have not worked, your 
  236. drive may provide an Alternate Capacity (AC) jumper that will lock the drives 
  237. LBA size to approximately 32 GB - allowing it to be used on systems that do 
  238. not support it (such as those having the Award BIOS 4.51 problem).  Follow the 
  239. procedure below titled "For drives WITH an alternate capacity (AC) option 
  240. jumper" to lock the drive size to approximately 32GB.  (Note if the AC jumper 
  241. is used on a drive over 32GB, Ontrack's DDO will not see more than the AC 
  242. jumper forced size of approximately 32GB). 
  243.  
  244. If your new drive is between 2.1Gb and 32GB, and your System Setup (CMOS) is 
  245. set to "AUTO", you may have a BIOS with a 4096-cylinder limitation that hangs 
  246. the system during auto-detection.  Your computer manufacturer may have a BIOS 
  247. upgrade that will support more than 4096 cylinders.  To continue with this 
  248. installation, your drive may provide an alternate capacity (AC) jumper setting 
  249. that lowers the cylinder auto-detection to below the BIOS limitation barrier 
  250. and still provide full drive capacity using your hard disk installation 
  251. utility. 
  252.  
  253. In this case, power off your system and install your drive's AC jumper, or 
  254. remove your new drive and go to the beginning of these instructions and follow 
  255. each step. 
  256.  
  257. For drives WITH an alternate capacity (AC) option jumper: 
  258.  
  259. 1. Install the AC jumper per drive label instructions. 
  260. 2. Set the CMOS drive type using ONE of the following methods listed in 
  261.    preferred order: 
  262.    a. Select "Automatic Drive Detection". This allows your computer to 
  263.       configure itself automatically for your new drive. 
  264.    b. Select "User-defined" or "Custom" drive setting and set to the following:
  265.       1024   cylinders 
  266.         16   heads 
  267.         63   sectors 
  268.          0   write precomp (wp) 
  269.          0   landing zone (lz) 
  270.    c. Select Drive Type 1.
  271.  
  272. For drives WITHOUT an alternate capacity (AC) option jumper, choose option b) 
  273. or c) in step 2 above.
  274.  
  275. [MOUNTDRIVE]
  276. INSTRUCTIONS FOR MOUNTING THE DRIVE 
  277.  
  278. ( ) Mount the drive. 
  279.  
  280. 1. Mount the drive in either the horizontal or the vertical position. 
  281. 2. Slide the drive into the bay. 
  282. 3. Align the drive-bay screw holes with the threaded holes in the drive 
  283.    housing or expansion brackets.  Hand thread the screws to lightly secure the 
  284.    drive in the bay.  For some installations, you might have to use the screw 
  285.    holes on the bottom (circuit board side) of the drive. 
  286. 4. Check the drive alignment and tighten the screws firmly.  DO NOT over 
  287.    tighten. 
  288. NOTE: If you need to attach the drive in a 5.25-inch bay, attach a pair of 
  289. 3.5-inch to 5.25-inch expansion.  Some computers require that you attach special 
  290. hard-disk-drive mounting hardware to ensure that the drive mounts securely into 
  291. the bay. Contact your computer dealer or refer to the documentation that comes 
  292. with your computer if you need specialized mounting hardware or more information.

  295. INSTRUCTIONS FOR ATTACHING CABLES TO THE DRIVE 
  296.  
  297. ( ) Attach the cables to your new drive. 
  298.  
  299. 1. If using the 40-pin/80-conductor Ultra-ATA cable, attach the blue end 
  300.    connector to the system board or host controller, the grey middle 
  301.    connector to the Slave, and the black end connector to the Master. If 
  302.    using the standard 40-pin cable a single drive should be connected to the 
  303.    end connector; otherwise, the Master goes in the middle connector and the 
  304.    Slave goes in the end connector.
  305. 2. Be sure that pin 1, the colored wire on the interface cable, is closest to 
  306.    the DC power connector. 
  307. 3. Find an unused power connector on a cable coming from the computer power 
  308.    supply and attach it to the four-pin DC power connector.  The power 
  309.    connector is keyed so that it attaches one way only.  DO NOT force it. If 
  310.    the connector does not attach using reasonable pressure, turn it and try 
  311.    again.
  312. 4. Verify that the cables do not interfere with the computer cover and do not 
  313.    block the power-supply fan blades or air-flow paths.
  314.  
  315. NOTE: If all power cables are in use, purchase a DC Y-connector (available at 
  316. many electronic stores) and split a connection to provide power for more 
  317. devices.

  320. INSTRUCTIONS FOR ATTACHING CABLES TO THE DRIVE 
  321.  
  322. ( ) Attach the cables to your new drive. 
  323.  
  324. 1. Attach the Serial Data cable to the drive.  Attach the other end of the cable
  325.    to the system board or host controller.  Both ends of the data cable are keyed 
  326.    so that they attach one way only.  DO NOT force it.  
  327. 2. Some systems allow for Serial ATA drives to be powered using a 3.3V connection 
  328.    on the system board.  For more information on this type of connection, please
  329.    consult your system board manual.  Otherwise, find an unused power connector 
  330.    on a cable coming from the computer power supply and attach it to the DC power 
  331.    connector on the drive, an adapter may be necessary.   The power 
  332.    connector is keyed so that it attaches one way only.  DO NOT force it. If 
  333.    the connector does not attach using reasonable pressure, turn it and try 
  334.    again.
  335. 3. Verify that the cables do not interfere with the computer cover and do not 
  336.    block the power-supply fan blades or air-flow paths.

  363. computer cover.  Reconnect all devices. Make sure that the keyboard, mouse and 
  364. monitor are firmly connected.  Reconnect all AC power cords.
