  1. Windows 95 and Windows 98
  2. There are two versions of ERS98 please read  notes first:

  10. 1) If you downloaded the 2.64 MB version then read below for additional
  11. notes, the 2.64 MB has the VB5run included in the setup.
  12.  
  13. 2) The 710 KB or 780 KB, has the ERS Setup wizard and doesn't 
  14. include the VB5run.
  15. Also new 260 KB update now available, it includes ERS98 files only
  16. but doesn't include any of ERS98 DLLs. 
  17.  
  18. 3) Before ERS98 will run, you must install the ERS VB5run kit, it is  
  19. included with the 2.64 MB version, or you can download it at
  20. http://www.mslm.com/ersmore.htm
  21.  
  22. 4) If you have a command line in the Autoexec.bat to delete Win95
  23. temporary files in the C:\Windows\Temp upon startup then the VB5run 
  24. update will not take affect if it prompts you to restart computer because
  25. the computer DLLs are outdated.
  26. Remove the line from the Autoexec.bat when you are installing programs
  27. that requires a reboot.
  28.  
  29. 5) If while installing you get the message "Unable to find Choice.com",
  30. this is an important file to have, it should be in the Windows\Command folder.

  32. The DLL update is supplied by Microsoft and absolutely safe, it actually
  33. makes Win95 the year 2000 ready.
  34. Win98 and OSR 2.53(that is OSR2c NOT OSR2b) are already year 2000 ready.

  39. INSTALLATION
  40. ------------
  41. ERS does not make any modifications or entries to the W95 Registry, 
  42. nor to any Win95 System files files. It simply makes new ERS98
  43. directories and copy the necessary ERS files into the appropriate
  44. directories, while adding an ERS98 Shortcut to  the Start menu.
  45.  
  46. Unzip and place ERS files into a temporary folder, double click 
  47. Setup.exe, and select the desired drive and path. Then click on the  
  48. "Install" button.
  49.  
  50. The ERS setup wizard will make one main Ers98 folder, and one other
  51. separate folder called "1Ers" in the root directory of your hard drive C:\,
  52. where the restoration batch files will get created once you do backups.
  53.  
  54. ERS.bat will be created in the "C:\ "directory once you open and close
  55. ERS98.exe or AutErs.exe, it contains information about your backup dates,
  56. reminder on the restorations command and your added notes to the backup. 
  57.  
  58. If restoring from backup Just type ERS OR ERS.bat at the Command 
  59. Prompt and it will automatically change directory to the 1ers folder.
  60.  
  61. If non of the files are found.
  62. Although it does not overwrite any existing files, ERS Setup Wizard
  63. will copy Attrib.exe from the Windows\Command directory, to the root 
  64. directory of C:\, and the self registering Stkit432.dll, Dzip32.dll, 
  65. Dzocx32.ocx, Dzstat32.ocx and Oc30.dll to the 
  66. C:\Windows\System directory. 
  67. Regwzrd.ocx for the Shareware version.

  70. REINSTALL
  71. ---------
  72. Take care  to see that the correct path to the previous installation is
  73. shown in the path window. 
  74.  
  75. When reinstalling, don't delete the previous {older} Ers98 directory,
  76. nor the ERS98.exe. Merely selecting the "Reinstall" command, it will 
  77. update and replace all files and recreate any missing folders, while 
  78. keeping your previous {old} backups safely intact.
  79.  
  80. UNINSTALL:
  81. ---------
  82. WARNING: DO NOT... use any third party software to UNINSTALL 
  83. any version of ERS.
  84.  
  85. To remove {uninstall} ERS correctly, you will find Remove.exe
  86. in the ERS98 directory, run it from there.
  87. Then delete the few files left in the ERS98 directory that can't be
  88. deleted by Remove.exe.
  89.  
  90. Suggest to keep the VB5run update files because it will work with 
  91. other VB 5.0 applications that call for it. But if for some reason you 
  92. need to remove it, go to the Control Panel\Add Remove Programs 
  93. and uninstall the ERS VB5run update.

  95. Below applies If you downloaded the 2.64 MB version

  98. INSTALLATION
  99. ------------
  100. The only difference is, InstallShield setup wizard used instead
  101. of the ERS Setup wizard and the VB5run already included.
  102. Read all above for general information about ERS. 
  103. Extract to temporary directory and double click the Setup.exe.
  104.  
  105. TO REINSTALL:
  106. ------------ 
  107. Read the above Reinstall section and use the ERS Setup Wizard. 
  108. Download the 770 KB or the 260 KB(No ERS98 DLLs included) version
  109. from http://www.mslm.com/ers98.htm which has the Reinstall feature.
  110. To use the the 780 KB for reinstall is highly recommended.

  112. UNINSTALLING the 2.64 MB version:
  113. --------------------------------
  114. To Un-install, go to the Control Panel \ Add Remove Programs, scroll 
  115. down to ERS98 and click uninstall, if for any reason it will not uninstall 
  116. then:
  117. you will find Remove.exe in the ERS98 directory, run it from there.
  118. Then delete the few files left in the ERS98 directory that can't be
  119. deleted by Remove.exe.
  120. Again don't use third party uninstall software to uninstall any versions of 
  121. ERS.
  122.  
  123. Windows 98:
  124. ---------- 
  125. If you are installing Windows 98 on top of Windows 95 then and 
  126. you have ERS98 or ERS32pro installed, before going any further,
  127. click Options\Update ERS for Win98. That will replace old Win95
  128. MS-DOS files in the 1Ers folder with the new Win98 MS-DOS files.
  129. Then delete all backups made in Win95.
  130. If you think that you want to go back to Win95, save couple Win95
  131. backups, be sure to note it. 
  132. After restoring Win95, click Options\Update ERS for Win98 again
  133. to replace Win98 DOS files with Win95 DOS files.
  134.  
  135. If accidently restored from Win95 backup, just re restore from Win98 backup.
  136. If you are installing ERS98 on top of Windows 98 then you are ready to go.

  138. After Installing ERS98:
  139. ----------------------
  140. Once ERS98 program is opened you will be prompted to select
  141. shortcuts names.
  142. Click the Done button if you are new to ERS.
  143.  
  144. Otherwise read the instructions below.
  145. (for advanced users)
  146.  
  147. If later on you decided you want to change your mind
  148. and change shortcuts selected, this is what you can do:
  149. Either delete every thing and Install all over, 
  150. that is, ERS98 directory, the 1ers folder, ERS.bat
  151. in C and the shortcut to the Startmenu.
  152. Or
  153. If you have backups that you don't want to loose but like
  154. to change the shortcut names then,
  155. Delete shortcut in the StartMenu,
  156. Delete the ERS.bat in C,
  157. Delete Shortcut.dat and Marker.txt in the ERS98\Ersfiles directory,
  158. then double click Ers98.exe, select shortcuts names etc when prompted,
  159. now copy all restore batch files from the older directory 1Ers to the
  160. new folder, (let us say 2Ers) then delete the 1Ers folder.
  161. Remember that ERS.bat get recreated every time you close ERS98.

  163. Where Win95 is mentioned it applies to Win98 too.
