INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
NetHelpDesk runs on 32 bit Windows systems such as '95,98,NT,2000,XP,2003. It occupies under 15 mb of disc space once installed.
INSTALLATION
If you have downloaded the nethelpdesk.zip from our WEB site, first expand the zip file to a temporary directory of your choice (C:\temp). Then run the setup.exe program.
If you have the CD then insert CD and run the setup.exe program located in the subfolder called NetHDWindowsClient.
In both cases follow the on screen instructions to install. For W2k and XP, ensure that you have local administrator rights to the PC to install and use NetHelpDesk.
To run NetHelpDesk on a PC you need to have Microsoft's ADO (MDAC) installed. Version 2.5 is included on the CD, or it can be found on the Microsoft web site at http://www.microsoft.com/data.
The MS Access example and empty databases are available for use straight after installation. The user name is 'AdamR' and the password is 'ar'.
To use SQL server databases you need to upsize these databases to SQL server. Follow the upsizing instructions included in the help file.
You can also restore the SQL DB from the backup images that are in SQL7 format.
MSDE, a cut down version of SQL server, can be found on the MS download site.
TIP 1: To edit the ADO connection string files (*.udl) use Microsoft's .udl editor that is run simply by double clicking on the .udl file or following the link on the start menu for the NetHelpDesk group.
For SQL server databases change the data source value from SQLSERVERMACHINE1 to the SQL server machines name, and change the Database name if you haven't called it nethd when upsizing. Adjust the SQL server username and password as required.
TIP 2: Ensure you're PC's short date format is set to display numbers rather than letters. i.e. 1 instead of JAN and 2 instead of FEB. Use control panel, regional settings, date format to adjust it.
TIP 3: On diagrams you can move about by clicking with the right mouse
on a blank part of diagram to make that point the centre. Or use
a right mouse drag to box an area to expand and zoom into.
TIP 4: If you have a one user license then only the first person defined in your technicians list will be able to log on. (There is a system technician named 'No One' that cannot be modified or deleted). You can amend the name of the first technician as required, it defaults to AdamR, password ar.
TIP 5: The escalation mechanism can be tested by entering the netbios name of your computer into the technician AdamR's details in the setup screen. Then start the escalation program and tick the send-pop ups box. This will then send escalation messages to your PC for all new calls.
TIP6: To activate the order entry/consumables and stock control features, go to options/setup/pc settings - and untick the "hide orders" check box.
