This section of AddWeb allows you to use key functions of AddWeb in a Wizard atmosphere, hiding the more complex screens, and taking you through each process step by step.
[Profile]
This section allows you to store all of the data AddWeb needs about your website. This information is required to properly execute nearly all of the tasks you will be performing. Fill out these fields as completely as possible to avoid errors in the future.
[Advisor]
Use this section to analyze and score your web pages against top ranking sites. Page Advisor(tm) results tell you how you can make changes to boost your site's position with your chosen keywords.
[Page Builder Plus]
Page Builder Plus(tm) allows you to create a doorway page or invisibly modify your existing page for better position on search engines.
[Submission]
Here you will register your website profiles with the search engines you choose. Add the profiles you wish to submit, then press the submit button on the top left.
[SiteStats]
After activating your SiteStats Live!(tm) account, you can immediately begin analyzing the traffic coming to your site. There are many report types available. Select one using the "Report to View" control, then click on "View Report".
[Ranking]
The ranking feature verifies your site's position on several search engines at once. This is a key element in planning your search engine placement strategies. Regular rankings can show important positioning trends.
[Search]
With Internet Search, you can quickly and easily search for any URL or keyword, then view the actual search engine's results page.
[Scheduler]
Using Scheduler, you can configure AddWeb to automatically submit or rank the profiles you choose unattended. You can setup recurring events or tasks that run only once.
[FTP]
AddWeb can upload your pages to your web server. FTP settings are set and stored in the Profile Setup section. Click on "Populate From Profile" to automatically retrieve these settings.
[Options]
These settings are required for AddWeb to function properly. Please take the time to determine what should be in each field. Some settings may be left blank.
[Help]
The help overview is designed to make it easy and fast to find help. You can get quick help here, as well as detailed help. Tutorials for all of the sections of AddWeb can be found here as well. Click on ôClose Helpö or select another area of the program using the drop down menu to leave Help Overview.
[Pro01] - Profile - Website Info
Website Info
This is your first step in creating a profile for submission to search engines. Use the "Populate" button at the top to automatically extract much of this information directly from your website. (Note that this feature is only available with a live Internet connection.) If you see that fields are still blank, it could mean that your webpage is missing META tags. If you have no keywords on your webpage, AddWeb will select some for you based on the page's content. In order to get top positioning, you can use the Page Builder Plus(tm) feature to build META tags into your webpage.
Select a nationality for your website as well as a "Unique Name" and "Unique Password." The user name and password are used to login to some search engines that require it.
This part of Profile Setup asks you for information on how search engines should categorize your site. First, select "Content Type". Commercial websites usually offer products or services, while most personal websites do not. MLM stands for Multi-Level Marketing, and Adult designates a website that is not suitable for children.
Next, go to the "Main Category Setup". Select a "Default Category", and then a "Sub-Category". Many search engines will use this information to help index your site within a category. When ready, go to the "Complex Category Setup" tab.
Currently Yahoo, Snap, and AOL/DMOZ require you to choose one of their custom categories to submit to. Select one of them, then browse through their categories until you find one that best fits your website. Select the Top Level Category on the left, and then double-click on a sub-category on the right to navigate. Note the message that indicates when you have selected a category that is specific enough to be submitted to. Do this for each search engine in turn.
You can use the arrow buttons to move back and forth through the categories. They work like the forward and backward arrows in your web browser.
[Pro04] - Profile - Website Owner
Website Owner
This section defines who owns the website this profile is being created for. If you have already saved owner info, you can select one from the list. If not, fill out these fields as accurately and completely as possible.
Note that there are two e-mail fields. The submission e-mail will be submitted to the search engines and will generate tremendous amounts of unwanted e-mail, or "Spam". We recommend that you establish a free e-mail account as an alternative address to use for this purpose. Do not use your private e-mail address.
The reports e-mail address tells AddWeb where to send the submission or ranking reports that are setup to be sent through e-mail.
[Pro05] - Profile - Search Engines
Search Engines
Here is where you select the search engines that you want to register with. The Tree View allows you to simply navigate the search engines and select or deselect individual engines or entire groups of them. To clear up clutter in Tree View, check the "Only Show Selected Engines" option.
The right side of this view displays information about the currently highlighted search engine.
[Pro06] - Profile - Ranking
Ranking Setup
Enter settings you want to associate with this profile by default. You can change the keywords used here in ranking if you wish. The Unique Text is extracted from your page title and can be edited here as well.
The title of your website should be unique as it identifies your website to the world on the search engines. A unique title also allows you to locate your website on search engines by searching for that unique text.
You can add as many URLs with unique text as you like, but keep in mind that the more you add, the longer it will take your computer to complete the ranking. Tremendous amounts of data are processed during ranking.
Be sure to specify a competitor's URL to compare ranking results against. These comparative analyses can be very helpful in positioning your site, as you will later want to analyze your competitor's pages using Page Advisor(tm).
Search depth is the number of results you wish to check from each search engine. The deeper you go, the more data you can gather for a long-term ranking campaign. However, the important listings will usually be in the top fifty results.
[Pro07] - Profile - Auto Reports
Auto-Reporting
If you would like to automatically generate and receive reports when submission and ranking tasks are completed, select the report types you want here.
Text reports can be viewed in Windows Notepad or WordPad. E-mail reports use text formatting and sends reports to the e-mail address selected in the website owner section. You can add a custom message to preface these reports if you like. HTML reports are designed to be viewed in a web browser and are formatted to be easy to read and navigate.
You can change some of the default report settings here such as output directories and graphics also. Please read the help section on reports for more about these settings.
[Pro08] - Profile - FTP
FTP Settings
In this section, you can store the FTP settings you want associated with this profile by default. Enter the FTP server and login information, as well as where to find your web pages on your computer's hard drive.
If you are using a Proxy Server to gain access to the Internet, you can configure it in this section. Most home users and dial-up Internet users do not use a proxy server, so in many cases you can leave these settings blank.
[PAA01] - Page Advisor - Setup
Page Advisor(tm) Setup
First, select a web page on the Internet or a web page on your local computer's hard drive to analyze. Browse your hard drive for it or enter the full URL to the page.
There are two types of analyses available: General and Advanced. In a General Analysis, your page will be compared against data collected from thousands of top-ranking websites. This will tell you how to make your page generally rank high across all the major search engines and is the recommended method of analysis.
An Advanced Analysis will compare your page against the data of only one search engine, as well as the three top-ranking pages for your selected keywords on that engine. This narrow comparison will tell you how to make your page rank highest for the engine you have selected, but it is important to note, however, that this data only applies to your selected engine and that using this information may cause you to go down in ranking on the other engines. Also, this analysis will take longer than a General Analysis because the information on the top three pages is collected directly from the Internet as the analysis is running.
You will want to decide how and where you want to make the report and how restrictive you want to make the results. Typically, we recommend leaving analysis options to "Unrestricted Searching", as checking the "Restrictive Search Rules" option severely narrows the scope of the results.
Select the keywords you want to analyze. Populating a list of keywords from the page you are analyzing is usually the easiest way to do this. Remember that using more keywords will cause the analysis to take longer. You are now ready to run the Page Advisor(tm).
[PAB01] - Page Builder Plus - General Information
General Information
To build a doorway page or modify your existing pages for better positioning on the search engines, you should first 'Populate' this form from your existing web page. This will display some of the vital information on your current web page. Some of this information may need to be changed to boost your position on the search engines.
The Page Text, or body, can contain normal HTML tags but does not have to. If you leave it free of HTML tags, everything in that field will appear as default text in the page you create here. Comments are standard HTML comments.
[PAB02] - Page Builder Plus - ALT Text
Image Alt Text
Image Alt Text is the pop-up text you find on many web pages when you hover over an image. This can be very important for focusing keywords on some search engines. Images and any associated ALT Text will be populated from an existing page if they exist.
If you don't have any images to edit, don't worry. Search engines want to index readable pages and ALT tags are designed only to make graphical information readable to search engine spiders.
[PAB03] - Page Builder Plus(tm) - Links
Links
Links, or Hyperlinks, are how you travel from one web page to another. It can be hard to figure out where the next click on a web page will take you unless you use Link Text. One reason for this is to allow people to read where they are going without having to figure out what a cryptic URL means. Search engines also read this information. It can make it easier for them to understand your site and help you rank higher on their listings.
Enter a URL in the top field and associated text in the lower field.
[PAB04] - Page Builder Plus - Build New Pages
Generate a new Doorway page
To build a position-boosting doorway page begin by selecting the directory on your hard drive to create the page in, and choosing the file name for the page you wish to create.
Once you have chosen a save directory and a file name, you can pick which template file you wish to use. The default AddWeb template is always available, or you can create your own by clicking on the 'New Page Style' button.
It is recommended that you allow Page Builder Plus to include all the options under Search Engine Optimization. By unchecking an option, Page Builder Plus will remove the appropriate HTML from the doorway page you create. However, we recommend that all the options be included--otherwise your ranking could be hurt on some search engines.
[PAB05] - Page Builder Plus - Edit Existing Page
Change an existing page
If you want to modify an existing web page, locate it on your hard drive and select the tags you wish to add or modify. AddWeb will only insert informational tags into existing web pages; it will not alter the page's appearance.
Be sure to always back up your important files! AddWeb can create a back up of any web page it modifies.
Click on "Build" when you're ready!
[PAB06] - Page Builder Plus - Review Pages
Review Pages
Here you can review your new or modified pages. The top section lists any pages you created and where they are on your hard drive. Don't forget to upload these optimized pages to your web server!
Below, you can see the HTML source of the page you just created. Click on the "View in Browser" button to do just that. You will probably want to analyze the page to see how it will likely perform on selected search engines.
Remember, AddWeb can only create pages based on the information you give it. If the page does not score straight A's, you should load it into Page Builder Plus(tm) and follow the advice given by Page Advisor(tm).
[SUB01] - Submission - Setup
Submission Setup
First, add the profiles you would like to submit by clicking on the "Add" button, and then click the "Submit" button above.
You can select multiple profiles to submit by holding down the CTRL or SHIFT buttons on your keyboard while clicking on the profile names.
You can save a group of profiles as a list for later submission together. Just click on the "Save List" button once you have selected the profiles you would like to include, and then load the list later when you are ready to submit them.
[SUB02] - Submission - Active
Submission Process
Submission is completely automatic.
The upper right section of the display provides an overall view of your submission progress and success rate. Time elapsed and estimated completion times are displayed just below.
The lower right displays currently active submissions. If you see an engine that you didn't want to submit to, or one that seems to be taking too long, click on the hourglass next to it and it will timeout and be counted as a failed submission.
The lower left display organizes the completed submissions by Success, Skipped and Failed submissions. Select which you want to view from the options directly above the list.
[SSL01] - SiteStats LIVE - Select Account
Select Account
Fill out this information to begin the live traffic analysis with SiteStats Live!(tm). Be sure to use a current e-mail address, as your activation code will be sent there via e-mail.
Enter the domains that you wish to track in the lower right. These domains will not be tracked individually, but treated as a single domain. Enter only the base URL for your website. Don't enter a specific page, or you will be restricted to viewing statistics on just that page.
Click on "Create" and check your e-mail. AddWeb signs you up right away and you should get your activation code almost immediately by e-mail. Come back here when you do get it so you can activate your account.
After activating your account, you can immediately start analyzing traffic to your website by inserting SiteStats Live!(tm) code into your web pages. Click on "Active Account Details" to do this.
[SSL02] - SiteStats LIVE - Active Details
Active Account Details
This is where you will manage your account details. The upper section provides you with your basic account information. Set the time zone to the local time of your website.
"Click Value" is crucial for tracking the value of your traffic. If you estimate that every 20 visitors to your site provides you with $50.00 in total sales, you might want to set this value 250 ($2.50) per visitor referred to your site by a keyword search on a search engine. This provides you with a quick estimate of what your website traffic is worth in terms of dollars.
The lower half of this screen will help you select the web pages you would like to gather statistics on. Just find the pages on your hard drive that you want to keep track of, and then add them to the list. Once in the list, you can insert or remove the SiteStats Live!(tm) code.
[SSL03] - SiteStats LIVE - View Stats
View Statistics
This is the detailed SiteStats Live!(tm) Report area. Because data is gathered and updated live by the minute, you can start analyzing your traffic right away.
Select the account and the type of report you want to see, then click the View Report button. Look through the different reports to see the various kinds of information now available to you.
The search engine keywords report will provide you with a great deal of information regarding which keywords people are using to find your site. Since these keywords are already bringing you traffic, you should focus on them. Also, people often search with the same phrase on multiple engines.
[RAN01] - Ranking - Setup
Ranking Setup
Ranking a profile is as simple as selecting it from the list and clicking on the rank button at the top. All of the settings involved, except selecting the search engines to rank with, are stored during the profile setup.
To perform a Quick Rank, enter a URL with matching unique text from the title. Then select relevant keywords and the search engines you want to display ranking information with then click the Rank button.
Search depth tells AddWeb how many results you want to scan from each search engine. The higher this number is, the more work your computer will have to do to gather results.
[RAN02] - Ranking - Active
Ranking Process
While ranking is underway, you will be able to see what kind of results you are getting for the selected profile. You can determine and verify your position on multiple search engines at once. You can also see which results page your first listing appears on, and how often you appear in each search engine. Link Count tells you how many times a search engine finds a link to your page from another website. Also known as "Link Popularity", having a high Link Count may increase your position on certain search engines.
Select a keyword in the list to view results for that keyword. Because of AddWeb's multi-tasking capabilities, you will likely see the progress moving on more than one keyword ranking at a time.
[INS01] - Internet Search
Internet Search
Both General and URL searches will launch your default web browser to display search results as they appear on the search engines themselves. Either type of search can be performed for a profile as well as a manually entered search phrase.
A General search looks for exactly what you enter in the "Keywords or URL to search for" field. This will bring you to the same results that you would get if you entered the phrase into the search field on a search engine's main page. If you are familiar with the more advanced queries on these engines (like putting quotes around the phrase), you can perform them here as well.
A URL search will look for the URL you enter according to the URL search commands for the selected search engine.
[SCH01] - Scheduler - Default OFF
Scheduler is OFF
You can schedule submissions and ranking runs to run unattended using this section of AddWeb. If you have any tasks queued, you will see them listed here along with the scheduled time and the type of task to be performed.
Any task scheduled before the current date/time, which for some reason or other was skipped, will run automatically the next time Scheduler is enabled.
Please note that sorting tasks by name is purely for visual organization. Scheduled tasks will always run at the programmed time.
The buttons across the top allow you to create new tasks or edit the selected task. You can also delete tasks or disable them temporarily. The "Run Now" button allows you to force any of the scheduled tasks to run now, rather than at the scheduled time.
[SCH02] - Scheduler - Default ON
Scheduler is ON
Note that you will not be able to navigate other sections of the user interface until you disable Scheduler by clicking the "Turn Scheduler Off" button.
While Scheduler is enabled, queued tasks will run automatically when the scheduled times arrive. If the scheduled time was in the past, the tasks will run in scheduled order until they are up to date.
If a task is old enough that the next time it is set to run would still be in the past, once it is complete, it will be re-scheduled to the next valid date in the future.
[SCH03] - Scheduler - Edit/New - Non Repeat - Currently used for all New/Edit views
Editing New and Existing Tasks
To create or edit a task, first supply it with a unique name. Something like "My Website Ranking". Select a date and time when the task should first run.
If you want to create a recurring task, do the same as you would for a one time task, then select how often you would like it to recur on a Daily, Weekly or Monthly basis. You will have a great deal of flexibility with repeating tasks and should look through your options carefully.
Assign a profile (or group of profiles) to a task and decide what type of activity to schedule, either ranking or submission.
[SCH04] - Scheduler - Edit/New - Repeat Daily - Not currently used
[SCH05] - Scheduler - Edit/New - Repeat Weekly - Not currently used
[SCH06] - Scheduler - Edit/New - Repeat Monthly - Not currently used
[FTP01] - FTP Uploader
FTP Upload
First, populate the FTP login information from a saved profile (or, optionally, enter them by hand). Once the fields have been populated with the correct settings, you will be ready to upload files to your web server.
Click on "Login" to connect to the FTP server you entered.
On the right side, you can see the current files and directories on the remote machine in a tree view. Click through the remote machine until you find the right directory to upload your files to. The currently selected upload (remote) directory will be listed above this window so you can be sure of sending the pages to the right place.
Finally, select the web pages you want to upload and click on the "Upload Selection" button. You can also drag them to the remote directory window on the right and they will upload immediately.
[OPT01] - Options
Options and Settings
Only your LAN or network administrator should enter Firewall/Proxy settings. If you are using AddWeb from home or have a dial-up connection to the Internet and have not installed a proxy server, leave these settings blank. Most home users and users with dial-up accounts do not use a proxy server.
The e-mail settings allow AddWeb to send e-mail reports automatically. You should use the SMTP server settings supplied by your Internet connection provider. Make sure that the e-mail address you use is associated with the SMTP server you have selected. The "Mail From Name" is the name you are known as to whomever is receiving e-mail reports and the Subject is the subject of any e-mail sent.
The HTTP Settings tell AddWeb how fast you want to submit and rank. The timeout is the number of seconds before AddWeb gives up on trying to connect to a site that is slow or may be down.
The Maximum Simultaneous Submissions and rankings are the number of search engines AddWeb will connect to simultaneously during submission and ranking. You should keep the number of simultaneous ranking connections set to, at most, half of the number of simultaneous submission connections, due to the increased processing overhead of ranking.
You can delete consistently failing search engines from the list. You can also automatically retry failed submissions; although this should be kept low since it will slow down submissions if a search engine is down.
You can tell AddWeb to play a WAV sound file when a submission completes. Just browse your hard drive for the sound you want to hear and select it.
You can tell AddWeb not to show you some of the regular notices that often appear while using the program.
If you want to run AddWeb in Scheduler ON mode by default, select this and AddWeb will start minimized with the Scheduler active when your computer starts.
