  5. This text file provides information you should know about 
  6. this version of Diskeeper.

  9. TRIALWARE INFORMATION
  10. =====================
  11.  
  12. 1.  This copy of Diskeeper is a full-featured version with
  13.     all the functionality of the retail product.  The only 
  14.     difference between this and the retail version is that
  15.     this version will expire 30 days after you install it.
  16.  
  17. 2.  For information about purchasing Diskeeper, including volume

  24. PLATFORMS AND OPERATING SYSTEM VERSIONS SUPPORTED

  28. This version of Diskeeper is supported on Intel x86 platforms 
  29. running Windows NT 4.0 builds 1381 and higher.

  32. CHANGES IN THIS RELEASE
  33. =======================
  34.  
  35. 1.  This version of Diskeeper introduces the Boot-Time Directory 
  36.     Consolidation feature.  This allows Diskeeper to defragment 
  37.     and consolidate directories -- objects that cannot be defragmented 
  38.     in an on-line mode.
  39.  
  40. 2.  The Windows NT Server version of Diskeeper can now be installed
  41.     on Windows NT Workstations. 
  42.  
  43. 3.  This version of Diskeeper introduces greatly enhanced scheduling
  44.     capabilities.  You can now:
  45.  
  46.     o Set schedules for more than one partition at a time
  47.     o Set a single schedule for all the partitions on one or
  48.       more computers on your network (Server version only)
  49.     
  50. 4.  The text analysis display has been revised.  It is now displayed 
  51.     as a separate window with enhanced display controls.
  52.  
  53. 5.  The Diskeeper Event Logging options have been expanded.  You can 
  54.     now log this information:
  55.  
  56.     o Service Start and Stop
  57.     o Defrag Start and Stop
  58.     o Number of Files Defragmented
  59.     o Number of Eliminated Fragments

  61.     o File Information

  67. KNOWN INCOMPATIBILITIES IN THIS RELEASE
  68. =======================================

  70. 1.  Diskeeper for Windows NT is not compatible with systems 
  71.     using the DPT Smart Cache III controller, unless Service 
  72.     Pack 1, 2 or 3 for Windows NT 4.0  has been installed.  Do 
  73.     not run Diskeeper on systems using the DPT Smart Cache 
  74.     III controller until you install Service Pack 1, 2 or 3 on 
  75.     your Windows NT system.
  76.  
  77. 2.  On rare occasions, especially when running Diskeeper in 
  78.     the Set It and Forget It mode, a Dr. Watson "Error 87" 
  79.     message may be displayed.  This message can be disregarded 
  80.     and is no cause for alarm.  We believe this is caused by
  81.     an error which Diskeeper is handling internally but which
  82.     Dr. Watson also attempts to handle.
  83.  
  84. 3.  The on-screen Diskeeper Boot-time Directory Consolidation 
  85.     progress information cannot be viewed on your monitor if 
  86.     you are using a Diamond Stealth Viper video card or any 
  87.     other video card that does not support Windows NT boot-time 
  88.     display.  You can still, however, record a summary file 
  89.     during the Boot-Time Directory Consolidation.  See the 
  90.     Diskeeper Help system for more information on the Boot-Time 
  91.     Summary File.

  94. KNOWN RESTRICTIONS IN THIS RELEASE
  95. ==================================
  96.  
  97. 1.  At times, the View menu Refresh option to update the tree view of 
  98.     the network computers may not reflect the current network.  This 
  99.     is due to network communication limitations in Windows NT.
  100.  
  101. 2.  You cannot use the Network Scheduler to schedule defragmentation on 
  102.     a computer to which you are currently connected.  Use the Drive 
  103.     Scheduler option to schedule defragmentation of partitions on the 
  104.     machine you are connected to -- the Network Scheduler option to 
  105.     schedule machines you are not connected to.
  106.  
  107.     This means you must be connected to a machine other than your local
  108.     computer (by clicking on a remote computer in the Diskeeper network 
  109.     tree view display) if you want to use the Network Scheduler to 
  110.     schedule your local computer.
  111.  
  112. 3.  Due to Windows NT security issues, it is necessary for you to have 
  113.     Administrator privileges on both the local machine and any remote
  114.     computers upon which you set Diskeeper schedules.  Your account on 
  115.     the remote computer must also have the same password as your account
  116.     on the local machine.
  117.  
  118. 4.  If a remote computer is shut down while Diskeeper Server is connected 
  119.     to that computer, you will be unable to re-connect Diskeeper to any other 
  120.     computers, including your local computer.  It may be necessary in such
  121.     circumstances to use the Windows NT Task Manager to end the Diskeeper
  122.     task.  After doing this, Diskeeper will operate properly.

  125. REQUIRED PRIVILEGES
  126. ===================

  128. You must have Administrator privileges to install and operate Diskeeper.

  131. INSTALLING DISKEEPER 
  132. ====================
  133.  
  134. Follow these steps to install Diskeeper:
  135.  
  136. 1.  From Windows NT Explorer or File Manager, double click on
  137.     SETUP.EXE in the directory where this text file resides.
  138.  
  139. 2.  Read the information displayed in the Setup Installation 
  140.     Wizard boxes and click the "Next" button as appropriate.
  141.  
  142. 3.  In the "Choose Destination Location" dialog box, either 
  143.     accept the default installation location, or click the 
  144.     "Browse" button to specify a different disk and/or 
  145.     directory.  If you specify a directory that does not exist, 
  146.     the setup program will create it for you.  Click the 
  147.     "Next" button after specifying a disk and directory, or to 
  148.     accept the default installation location.
  149.  
  150. 4.  The installation offers you the opportunity to register
  151.     Diskeeper on Executive Software's Web Site.  
  152.  
  153. 5.  After a short period of copying files, the installation is 
  154.     complete.

  158. UNINSTALLING DISKEEPER
  159. ======================
  160.  
  161. Follow these steps to remove Diskeeper from your computer:
  162.  
  163. 1.  From Control Panel, double click "Add/Remove Programs".
  164.  
  165. 2.  Click the "Install/Uninstall" tab.
  166.  
  167. 3.  Highlight "Diskeeper".
  168.  
  169. 4.  Click the "Add/Remove" button.  This removes the 
  170.     Diskeeper program files from your computer.
  171.  
  172. 5.  It may be necessary to manually delete the Diskeeper 
  173.     installation directory.
