  15. 1. About The Full Version of Mercenaries
  16. ----------------------------------------
  17. July 8, 2784: General Alexandr Kerensky gives his
  18. fateful order, "Exodus" and 200 transports, filled
  19. with scientists, soldiers and the best minds of the
  20. Inner-Sphere, vanish from known space.  For the 
  21. next three hundred years the Successor Lords use
  22. their regiments of BattleMechs, giant humanoid
  23. war-machines, to destroy what remains of the 
  24. Star-League, each Successor Lord, trying to place
  25. himself on the throne.  Humanity falls into 
  26. darkness.

  28. May 10, 3044, the present: the BattleMechs, once 
  29. used for heavy-labor and construction are now armed
  30. exclusively for battle.  Three hundred years of war
  31. have nearly destroyed man's ability to build his
  32. war-machines, only a few factories remain active,
  33. churning out BattleMechs for the four Successor
  34. States that still battle for the almost forgotten
  35. throne of the Star-League.  Most BattleMechs are 
  36. salvaged from battlefields, the victors scavenging
  37. what they can from the fallen.

  39. Mercenaries now sell their strength to the 
  40. Successor States, all bidding for the best contracts 
  41. with the most powerful warlords.  On the periphery, 
  42. outside of the Successor States, pirates rule petty
  43. "Periphery Kingdoms".  From the fringes of human
  44. space the Pirate-Kings raid weakened Successor
  45. Lords for precious water and spare-parts.

  66. - 45 MB of uncompressed hard disk space (not including 15 MB
  67.   for downloaded files)
  68. - 256 Color (640 x 480) VLB or PCI Video card

  70. - 100% Microsoft compatible mouse and driver
  71. - 100% Sound Blaster compatible sound card

  75. NOTE: The Windows 95 version uses new Microsoft
  76. DirectX 2 technology, and requires that your system
  77. have the most updated drivers that fully support 
  78. DirectX.

  81. 4. Installation Instructions

  84. -----A.    Multi-file downloadable demo-----
  85. (1) Right mouse click on the desktop and choose 
  86.     New==>folder.
  87. (2) Now type Merc and ENTER. This should name the folder Merc.
  88. (3) Copy all of the files you downloaded to this
  89.     Merc folder.  You should have a total of 12 files
  90.     consisting of: (all but the first and last are approx. 1.4 MB)

  92.     mdem_1.bin
  93.     mdem_2.bin
  94.     mdem_3.bin
  95.     mdem_4.bin
  96.     mdem_5.bin
  97.     mdem_6.bin

  103. (4) Once all the files are copied, open the Merc folder and
  104.     double-click on Mercdown.exe (extraction will occur)
  105.     If a file is missing or misnamed, you will get an error
  106.     message; if this happens, check to make sure you've named
  107.     all the files as listed above.
  108. (5) The first extraction prompt will ask if it is OK to
  109.     install all files to C:\MERCDEMO\, type 'Y' if this 
  110.     is OK.  Answering 'N' will prompt you to specify the 
  111.     location to extract the files.
  112. (6) Now click on Start and choose Run.
  113.  
  114.     NOTE: For the next step we will assume you extracted 
  115.     the files to the default location (C:\MERCDEMO). 
  116.  
  117. (7) Type C:\MERCDEMO\MERCDEMO and press Enter.
  118.  
  119. You can delete the Merc folder on your desktop, if
  120. desired.
  121.  
  122.  
  123. -----B.    Single-file downloadable demo-----
  124.  
  125. (1) Right mouse click on the desktop and choose 
  126.     New==>folder.
  127. (2) Now type Merc and ENTER. This should name the folder Merc.
  128. (3) Copy the file you downloaded to this Merc folder.
  129.     You should have two files:
  130.     Mercdown.exe         (very small)
  131.     Mercdemo.bin         (about 15 megabytes) 
  132. (4) Once the files are copied, open the Merc folder and
  133.     double-click on Mercdown.exe (extraction will occur)
  134. (5) The first extraction prompt will ask if it is OK to
  135.     install all files to C:\MERCDEMO\, type 'Y' if this 
  136.     is OK.  Answering 'N' will prompt you to specify the 
  137.     location to extract the files.
  138. (6) Now click on Start and choose Run.

  140.     NOTE: For the next step we will assume you extracted 
  141.     the files to the default location (C:\MERCDEMO).

  143. (7) Type C:\MERCDEMO\MERCDEMO and press Enter.

  145. WARNING: Mercenaries uses Microsoft DirectX 2 technology
  146. for Windows(R) 95. You will need drivers for your hardware that support
  147. DirectX 2 to play the Mercenaries Demo. If you are not sure whether 
  148. your hardware and drivers support DirectX 2 please consult the 
  149. hardware manufacturer.

  239. 6. DirectX Information
  240. ---------------------------  
  241. Microsoft DirectX 2 needs to be installed on your
  242. computer to play the Mercenaries Demo. If you need
  243. DirectX 2, you can download it from 
  244. WWW.ACTIVISION.COM
  245.  
  246. If you have downloaded the Microsoft DirectX 2 from
  247. our Web site, you will need to double-click on 
  248. DX2.EXE to extract the files. Once you have extracted
  249. the files, you will need to open the 
  250. DirectX folder and double-click on DXSETUP.EXE. The
  251. program will install the appropriate files on your
  252. computer.

  254. What is DirectX 2 and why do I need it?
  255.  
  256. Microsoft's DirectX 2 is an API (Application 
  257. Programming Interface) set that increases the speed
  258. at which games play under the Windows(R) 95 operating
  259. system. These APIs allow direct access to the enhanced
  260. features of hardware under Windows(R) 95. With 
  261. DirectX 2, a program has instant access to the 
  262. hardware, allowing for great advances in graphics,
  263. sound, video, 3-D, and network capabilities of games.
  264.  
  265. Since Windows(R) 95 and DirectX 2 are relatively
  266. new in the computer world and have not achieved
  267. compatibility with some older video cards, many 
  268. manufacturers are releasing updated drivers for 
  269. Windows(R) 95 to meet the DirectX standard. 
  270. If you are not sure about your video card's 
  271. compatibility, consult the company that makes your 
  272. video card.

  274. If the Microsoft DirectX Installer does not detect 
  275. DirectX 2 on your computer, it will install 
  276. DirectX 2 for you. After installation is complete, 
  277. you will need to restart your computer in order for 
  278. DirectX 2 to take effect.

  280. If you have other Windows 95 games on your computer, 
  281. chances are you already have an earlier version of 
  282. DirectX installed on your computer. In this case, 
  283. the Microsoft Installer will write over that version 
  284. with DirectX 2.  At that point, the game 
  285. installation process will be complete. You will need 
  286. to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
  287.  
  288. If however, you already have DirectX 2 or a higher
  289. version installed on your computer, the Microsoft
  290. DirectX 2 installer will detect that and not overwrite
  291. any DirectX 2 or higher files.  You will not need to 
  292. restart your computer after installation in order 
  293. to run Mercenaries.

  295. DirectX 2 should not affect any titles designed 
  296. for the original version of DirectX. Should you 
  297. encounter difficulties with DirectX 2, please 
  298. contact Microsoft for further information.
