-
-
- Thank you for using McAfee VirusScan for DOS. This What's
- New file contains important information regarding the
- current version of this product. Network Associates
- strongly recommends that you read the entire document.
-
- Network Associates welcomes your comments and suggestions.
- Please use the information provided in this file to contact
- us.
-
- ***** IMPORTANT NOTE *****
-
- DOS memory limitations and increases in the size of the
- .DAT files shipped with VirusScan for DOS have made it
- necessary to revise the VShield on-access scanner
- included with this product. Network Associates strongly
- recommends that you upgrade any VShield TSR version you
- have installed on your computer to the latest VShield
- TSR version.
-
- Beginning with the release of .DAT version 3106, you
- MUST upgrade to the latest version of the VShield TSR
- in order to use it with any .DAT files released after
- .DAT version 3106. Network Associates strongly
- recommends that you upgrade any copies of VirusScan for
- DOS, VirusScan for OS/2, and ScanPM, all of which include
- the new version of the VShield TSR. Older versions of
- the VShield TSR scanner will not work with .DAT versions
- later than 3106. The new .DAT files do not affect earlier
- versions of the VShield VxD -- the on-access scanner for
- Windows.

- ____________
- NEW FEATURES
-
- 1. VirusScan now scans the Master Boot Record (MBR) and
- boot sectors on removable Syquest drives connected
- to your computer's parallel port. In order to do
- this, you must boot your computer into DOS with the
- drivers for your Syquest drive installed on your
- hard disk and loaded into memory. You may not perform
- this type of scan using the Syquest temporary access
- program VISIT.EXE or when running any version of
- Windows.
-
- 2. When you start VirusScan for DOS with the /CLEAN and
- /MOVE options enabled, the program now copies the
- infected file to the quarantine directory, or copies
- it in place with a new extension, before it tries to
- remove the infecting virus. If it cannot remove the
- virus from the original file, VirusScan will delete it,
- but will retain the copy. If VirusScan can clean the
- original file, it will leave it in place. This allows
- you to keep copies of infected files in order to track
- them or forward them to Network Associates for
- evaluation.
-
- 3. VirusScan now scans Microsoft Excel spreadsheets for
- Formula-based macro viruses. It can detect and
- clean all variants of the XF/PAIX formula virus.
-
- 4. VirusScan for DOS includes improvements in its ability
- to detect and clean the Laroux virus in Microsoft
- Excel spreadsheets.

- ____________
- KNOWN ISSUES
-
- 1. Legitimate programs that write to the Master Boot Record
- of a disk, such as some disk security programs, may be
- identified by VirusScan as a "probable unknown boot
- sector virus." If this problem is encountered, use the
- /NODDA command-line switch. This prevents VirusScan
- from scanning the Master Boot Record of the disk.
-
- 2. VirusScan's delete and move operations are not currently
- supported for infected objects detected within Microsoft
- Office binder files.
-
- ____________
- INSTALLATION
-
- * INSTALLING VIRUSSCAN FOR DOS *
-
- Follow the first set of steps to set up the VirusScan
- for DOS version with the included installation utility.
- This version scans your hard disk for viruses before
- setup.
-
- Follow the second set of steps to copy the VirusScan
- for DOS version that does not have an installation
- utility. This version does not scan your hard disk
- automatically before setup.
-
- 1. To install VirusScan for DOS on your computer,
- with the included installation utility, follow
- these steps:
-
- a. Change your command line prompt to point to
- the directory that contains your copy of
- VirusScan.
-
- b. Type INSTALL.BAT at the DOS prompt.
-
- VirusScan will begin scanning your hard disk
- for infected files.
-
- c. When VirusScan completes its scanning operation,
- you'll see the VirusScan welcome screen. Follow
- the instructions that appear in order to complete
- your installation.
-
- By default, the installation utility makes a
- directory on your hard disk named
- C:\NETA\VIRUSCAN and copies the program files
- to that directory.
-
- The installation script then adds the directory
- to the path statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
- It also adds two lines that enable VShield, the
- Network Associates on-access virus scanner,
- whenever you start your computer. For complete
- virus protection, Network Associates recommends
- starting VShield with the /ANYACCESS switch.
-
- 2. To copy the the VirusScan for DOS version without
- an included installation utility to your hard
- disk, follow these steps:
-
- a. Make a directory for VirusScan on your hard disk.
- b. Copy the VirusScan for DOS files to that
- directory.
- c. Use any DOS text editor to open your AUTOEXEC.BAT
- file, then add the directory you just created to
- the path statement in that file. To learn how
- to edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, consult your DOS
- documentation.
-
-
- * PRIMARY PROGRAM FILES FOR VIRUSSCAN FOR DOS *
-
- Files located in the Install directory:
- =======================================
-
- SCAN.EXE = VirusScan for DOS program
- README.1ST = Network Associates information
- PACKING.LST = Packing list
- VALIDATE.EXE = Authenticity validation program
- SCAN.DAT = Virus scan definition data
- NAMES.DAT = Virus names definition data
- CLEAN.DAT = Virus clean definition data
- WHATSNEW.TXT = This document
- RESELLER.TXT = Network Associates authorized resellers
-
-
- * TESTING YOUR INSTALLATION *
-
- The Eicar Standard AntiVirus Test File is a combined
- effort by anti-virus vendors throughout the world to
- implement one standard by which customers can verify
- their anti-virus installations.
-
- To test your installation, copy the following line
- into its own file, then save the file with the name
- EICAR.COM.
-
- X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
-
- The file size will be 69 or 70 bytes.
-
- Next, start VirusScan and allow it to scan the
- directory that contains EICAR.COM. When VirusScan
- scans this file, it will report finding the
- EICAR-STANDARD-AV-TEST-FILE virus.
-
- Note that this file is NOT A VIRUS. Delete the file
- when you have finished testing your installation to
- avoid alarming unsuspecting users.
-
-
- * UNINSTALLING VIRUSSCAN FOR DOS *
-
- To remove VirusScan for DOS from your hard disk,
- follow these steps:
-
- 1. If you have VShield running on your computer,
- first remove it from memory by typing VSHIELD
- /REMOVE at the command prompt.
-
- If you see an error message that tells you
- that you cannot remove VShield from memory,
- use any DOS text editor to open your
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file, then remove all lines that
- refer to VShield. Next, reboot your computer.
- VShield will not load and will not remain in
- memory.
-
- Note: If you remove VirusScan files from your
- hard disk before you remove VShield from
- memory, you'll see an error message that will
- remain until you remove VShield from memory
- or restart your computer.
-
- 2. Delete all VirusScan files from your hard disk.

- FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
- Regularly updated lists of frequently asked questions
- about Network Associates products also are available on
- the Network Associates BBS and website, and on CompuServe
- and America Online.
-
- Q: How do I enable the Centralized Alerting and Reporting
- option?
-
- A: VirusScan now supports Centralized Alerting and
- Reporting to remote NetWare or Windows NT servers
- running NetShield for Windows NT v2.5.3 and later
- or NetShield for NetWare v2.3.3 and later. To
- configure this option on your VirusScan client,
- use the /ALERTPATH <directory> option, where the
- <directory> is the path to the remote NetWare
- volume or NT directory. From this directory,
- NetShield can broadcast or compile the alerts
- and reports according to its established
- configuration.
-
- NOTE: The client must have write access to this
- <directory> location and the directory must contain
- the NetShield-supplied CENTALRT.TXT file.
-
- To send a complete alert file that identifies the
- infected system and its user, establish the following
- environment variables or add them to the AUTOEXEC.BAT
- file.
-
- Set COMPUTERNAME=<name of computer>
- Set USERNAME=<user name>
-
- VirusScan sends an .alr text file to the server when
- it detects an infected file. When the server receives
- the alert file, NetShield for Windows NT or NetShield
- for NetWare will send an alert message to an
- administrator and to other appropriate recipients.
-
-
- Q: How can I scan my Zip drive?
-
- A: If experience complications when trying to scan your
- Zip drive, start VirusScan with the /NODDA switch. For
- example, enter SCAN X: /NODDA (where X is the letter of
- your Zip drive).
-
- Note: Using /NODDA with the /ADN or /ADL switches
- might generate errors when scanning empty CD-ROM
- drives or empty Zip drives. If this occurs, type
- F (for Fail) to respond to the error message and
- allow the scan to continue.
-
-
- Q: I have created my own Emergency diskette. How
- can I optimize its performance?
-
- A: For optimal performance, create a CONFIG.SYS file on
- the emergency diskette and add the following lines:
-
- [CONFIG.SYS]
-
- DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS
- DOS=HIGH
-
- Also, add the HIMEM.SYS file from the DOS directory
- on your hard disk to the emergency diskette.
-
- Note: To learn how to create an emergency disk, see
- the VirusScan for DOS user's guide or request
- Document #214 from the Network Associates fax-on-demand
- system.
-
-
- Q: What does Network Associates recommend for systems that
- have low conventional memory?
-
- A: Network Associates recommends using ScanPM for low
- memory environments. ScanPM is a command-line scanner
- with a reduced conventional memory footprint that
- operates in protected mode command-line environments.
-
- You can download ScanPM for a free evaluation from the
- Network Associates electronic services listed below.
-
-
- Q: What is the difference between the VShield on-access
- scanner and VirusScan for DOS?
-
- A: VShield installs itself in memory and stays resident in
- memory to monitor your system for infected files. If you
- start an infected program or run your computer with an
- infected boot sector, VShield warns you that it has
- detected a virus.
-
- VirusScan for DOS is an on-demand scanner that allows
- you to perform a complete or partial scan of your
- computer, floppies, and CDs at any time. You can use
- VirusScan's comprehensive set of options to run
- customized scan operations.
-
-
- Q: How can I run VirusScan for DOS from a NetWare login
- script without running out of memory?
-
- A: Follow these steps:
-
- 1. Rename LOGIN.EXE to LOGIN1.EXE, then remove
- any references to VirusScan from the file.
- 2. Create a batch file named LOGIN.BAT.
- 3. Use the first line of the batch file to run
- VirusScan with whatever options you want to
- include.
- 4. Use the second line of the batch file, to run
- LOGIN1.EXE.
-
- These steps prevent LOGIN.EXE and SCAN.EXE from
- loading into memory at the same time, which allows
- VirusScan for DOS to run before your computer tries
- to get access to the network. Your login script
- should then run without complications.
-
-
- Q: Can I clean the Master Boot Record (MBR) on a
- hard disk formatted with the Windows NT file system
- (NTFS)?
-
- A: Yes. Follow these steps:
-
- a. Start the computer that has the NTFS partition
- from a virus-free DOS boot disk.
- b. Start VirusScan for DOS with these options:
- /BOOT /CLEAN. Be sure to run VirusScan from a
- floppy disk you know is free from viruses.
-
- This cleans the NTFS Master Boot Record, but VirusScan
- for DOS cannot read the rest of the NTFS partition.
-
- To scan the rest of the NTFS partition, you'll need
- to run VirusScan for Windows NT.
-
-
- Q: Can I update VirusScan data files so that it detects
- new viruses?
-
- A: Yes. If you have Internet access, you can download
- updated VirusScan data files from the Network Associates
- website, BBS, or other electronic resources. To download
- data files from the Network Associates website, follow
- these steps:
-
- 1. Use a web browser to connect to the Network Associates
- website at http://www.nai.com.
-
- 2. Click the Download tab.
-
- 3. Click Update Virus .DAT Files, then click Download
- Virus DAT File.
-
- 4. Follow the on-screen downloading instructions.
-
- 5. Data file updates are stored in a compressed form
- to reduce transmission time. Unzip the files into
- a temporary directory, then copy the new files to
- your existing VirusScan directory, replacing your
- old files.
-
- 6. Before performing any scans, shut down your
- computer, wait a few seconds, then turn it on again.
-
- If you need additional assistance with downloading,
- contact Network Associates Download Support at
- (408) 988-3832.
-
- Q: Why does VirusScan no longer include the /NOEMS option?
-
- A: The /NOEMS switch prevented VirusScan from using both
- expanded and extended memory. Because more than 15,000
- viruses now exist, the database VirusScan uses to
- identify them has grown considerably. VirusScan,
- therefore, now requires extended memory.
