["CHOSOKABE"]{"Although the Chosokabe clan may appear to be dominated by the more populous Oda clan to the East, we dominate the island of Shikoku in our own right. We have dealt with the Oda clan as a serpent deals with a lion and told only the occasional lie to gain control of much land from under their noses. From this secure fastness we can take out our neighbours the Mori and expand into the rest of Japan when the time is right. Our samurai may not be the dedicated warriors that other clans employ, but they are skilled and brave. Many are superb swordsmen, a tradition of which we are right to be proud. And tradition is not a weakness as far as we are concerned. There are those who accuse us of being old-fashioned and hidebound, but the old ways have served the Chosokabe well. We see no need to take up so-called new ways just because they are new! Join our clan and you will enjoy the easily defensible islands and rapid passage into the heartland of Japan in your bid to become Shogun. The greatest swordsmen await your orders and your whole clan needs your leadership."}
["HOJO"]{"A proud clan with a long history, we Hojo have been shoguns of Japan before and will be again. We brought prosperity and peace to Japan and co-ordinated the successful defence against the Mongols. Those who say that Hojo Soun was a only lowly adventurer without a clan of his own who overthrew the old order are without honour! We will crush them as ruthlessly as Soun-san crushed his enemies. Our clan's strength lies in its fighting prowess, its rich rice lands, and our understanding of the need for strong castles to hold those lands, not in wasteful talk with untrustworthy rivals or shifty foreign devils! We are always willing to adopt new ways of war to strengthen the clan, and we are unafraid to allow youth to flourish in our armies. We have a deep respect for the ways of warfare that others lack and our learning means we hardly need a single ally to defeat any enemy. Many have tried to conquer our corner of Japan in the past but we remain impregnable. Our lands are very fertile and the mountains protect us from invaders. From this base you can become a great Shogun."}
["IMAGAWA"]{"We of the Imagawa clan have every reason to be proud of our martial traditions, and the current skills of our samurai and their generals. If our samurai are sometimes a little headstrong and unruly, they can always be relied on to fight with bravery. Our warriors are second to none and numerous indeed. Those who accuse them of being poorly disciplined have little understanding of their effectiveness. Under the command of Imagawa Yoshimoto, we gained control of Mikawa, Totomi and Suruga, and have every intention of taking control of further territories. Our strong central position gives us many potential avenues of advance, and the surrounding clans are usually eager to be our allies - for a while, at least! Only the Oda clan has chosen to oppose us at every turn, simply because their greed and desire to control Owari province knows no bounds! Our lands are fertile and our friends many, if you choose to work with us, you can become Shogun in no time at all."}
["MORI"]{"We of the Mori clan have always been able to act with decisiveness. When the Ouchi clan were overthrown, our leader Mori Motonari seized the chance to make our clan great in their place. We are the masters of the Inland Sea and can become even more powerful if we remove the Chosokabe. If we overcome our enemies to the West our route to dominance can be undeniable. We have held up our resistance in the face of opposition, especially from the ruthless and power-hungry Oda clan. Their contempt for religion merely shows how right we are to treat matters of faith seriously and to treat holy monks with the respect their deserve. Thanks to those that far-sighted policy, we have little trouble in recruiting many warrior monks to our cause! The Mori clan rightfully takes pride on our loyalty to each other. Let other clans worry about traitors among them, because we know our strength comes from our loyalty as much as from the swords of our men, and from our faith. Unlike some of the other clans, we also have little to fear and much to learn from foreigners to our land. Choose wisely and choose to lead our clan, the path to glory awaits you."}
["ODA"]{"While our enemies call us ruthless and cruel, we of the Oda clan know that we are merely thorough and implacable. Traditionally we leave no opponent alive and have a superb grasp of ashigaru tactics, even if our enemies sometime claim we lack strategic subtlety. "Subtlety" is a word used by losers to excuse their failure! Our strategy is simple: all who stand against us, be they samurai or so-called sohei monks who hide behind religion while promoting their own political ambitions, will be swept aside. Any who can aid us in reaching the Shogunate, no matter where they come from, will be treated as friends! But if they should betray us, our revenge will take no account of the cost until their heads are counted amongst those slain by our armies. We dominate the central plains of Japan and while the flatlands are easy to attack they are also rich and fertile. We have no time for religion or any other such nonsense but will simply and swiftly rise to the top. As our leader you can expect to have many enemies but none who will survive long. We are the rightful heirs to Japan's offerings of wealth and if you join us you will surely be the greatest Shogun ever."}
["SHIMAZU"]{"We in the Shimazu clan have an enviable position in Japan. Our lineage is the most ancient and worthy of any samurai, and any of our rivals who forget that are foolish indeed! We have every reason to take pride in the achievements of our forefathers, for their honour reflects well on us to this very day. We are the most noble clan of all and our aura of prestige goes before us as we march. We control the island of Kyushu and with one foot on the mainland already the road ahead awaits your brave steps. Our lands are safe from quick attack by the other daimyo, and our nearness to China means that much wealth flows through our hands. Foreign wealth can be encouraged and controlled, and turned into weapons in the hands of our samurai and ashigaru! Equally, we are wise enough to see that learning from foreigners and maintaining good relations with them, no matter how strange their may look to our eyes, is a sensible policy in these times. Our fortunes have been good and if we take advantage of our closeness to foreign shores then you can establish the next Shogunate through leadership of the Shimazu clan."}
["TAKEDA"]{"Our strength in the Takeda clan has deep roots. We are proud of the traditions that make us samurai, and those traditions are part of the way we make war on our enemies. We look backwards with respect and affection to the time when the samurai only fought on horseback with a bow. As a result, the Takeda clan fights best when its horsemen are gathered as an army. Our leaders like know how to act with skill and ruthlessness. After all, didn't Takeda Shingen himself move against his own father to secure the future of our clan? And in considering the future, we have learned that the new ways are worth embracing when they bring defeat to our enemies. Those who doubt that we can act as needed should simply leave their homes and manors unguarded. Our ninja will soon show them the errors of their ways! We control some of the flat and fertile plains in the centre of Japan, and this serves our cavalry units well. Nothing can match our horses' fleetness across the level ground. Our Taisho are strong and trustworthy and our neighbours fear us as much as anyone. Leading our field generals into battle is the great honour that we can offer you, if you accept the challenge, it will not take long before you are Shogun."}
["UESUGI"]{"We in the Uesugi clan see no reason why we should not be the next Shoguns. We have spent much time and blood fighting against the upstart Hojo clan and the Takeda clan to make sure that this is the case. There are those who allow their jealousy to lead them to cast foolish slurs on our leaders. We respect traditions and have no fear of being remote here in the extreme East of civilised Japan. Our mountainous homeland is easy to defend and hard to attack, our neighbours do not know our motives and our reputation is unknowable. Enemies can only use words against us. Their warriors are creatures of the shallow waves compared to ours, who have taken the words of Sun Tzu to heart, and know that it is sometimes wise to retreat as well as advance. We need fear no man! We rarely encounter foreigners but do favour youth and bravery in our army. Our legendary leaders have often looked kindly upon monks within our lands. Confidence is our secret weapon and we do not even fear the greatest of enemies combined. As our Daimyo you will have a chance to come down from the mountains and take all of Japan until you are the true Shogun in the court of all Japan!"}
