  5.      Before you install OPTi 928/929/924 Device Driver make sure that 
  6.      you have installed OS/2 WARP Version 3.00 Revision 8.162 or later. 
  7.      Enter "VER /R" from an OS/2 command prompt to verify.
  8.  
  9.      This document describes the means for setting up your Sound Card for
  10.      proper operation under the OS/2 operating system environment. Before
  11.      installing, please read PART 0 What's new in this release. If you
  12.      already have OS/2 installed, please read PART 1; if not, please
  13.      proceed to PART 2 of this document. PART 3 of this document describes
  14.      how to connect your existing or new CD-ROM drive to your Sound Card
  15.      and provides a list of the CD-ROM models that are supported. PART 4
  16.      describes the parameter options for the Sound Card setup program
  17.      MAD16.SYS. PART 5 describes how to reconfigure your Sound Card settings
  18.      at a later time. PART 6 describes WIN-OS/2 installation. PART 7 
  19.      describes MPU401 support. PART 8 lists some known problems detected with 
  20.      this current release; and PART 9 describes a brief trouble-shooting 
  21.      session for problems that may be encountered during and after the 
  22.      installation of the Sound Card device driver.

  68. PART 1 - OS/2 already installed
  69.  
  70.         Installing the Sound Card device driver:
  71.  
  72.         1. Ensure that your Sound Card has been properly installed and power
  73.            on your system and wait for the OS/2 Desktop to appear.
  74.         
  75.         2. From your OS/2 Desktop, open (double click) the OS/2 System folder
  76.            and then open the Command Prompts folder.
  77.         
  78.         3. Open either the OS/2 Window icon or the OS/2 Full Screen icon to
  79.            start an OS/2 command prompt session.
  80.         
  81.         4. Check if a copy of MAD16.SYS existed in root directory by typing
  82.            "dir \MAD16.SYS". Remove the old MAD16.SYS by typing "del \MAD16.SYS"
  83.            if it existed.
  84.         
  85.         5. Enter another command "attrib -r \os2\boot\clock01.sys".
  86.         
  87.         6. Insert device driver diskette into your floppy disk drive.
  88.         
  89.         7. Type "A:MINSTALL" and ENTER.
  90.         
  91.         8. MINSTALL will display 3 options to install - OPTi 928/929/924
  92.            WAVE OS/2 Driver, OPTi OPL3 Driver and OPTi WIN-OS/2 Audio Driver.

  94.         9. Type "EXIT" and ENTER to return to OS/2 Desktop.

  96.         10. Reboot OS/2.

  99. PART 2  - OS/2 not installed
  100.  
  101.         OS/2 Diskette Installation:
  102.  
  103.         1. Install OS/2 and proceed to PART 1 to complete the installation of device driver
  104.         for your Sound Card.
  105.

  107.         OS/2 CD-ROM Installation:
  108.  
  109.         If you intend to connect a CD-ROM to the CD-ROM interface of your
  110.         sound card and use it for your OS/2 Warp installation, please follow
  111.         the steps below. If not, install your CD-ROM with the interface card
  112.         supplied by your CD-ROM manufacturer and proceed to install OS/2 Warp,
  113.         after your installation, proceed to PART 1 of this document to
  114.         complete the device driver for your Sound Card.
  115.  
  116.         1. In the OS/2 Warp CD-ROM installation package, you will find two (2)
  117.            "kicker" diskettes - a) Installation Diskette for CD-ROM, and
  118.                                 b) Diskette for CD-ROM (Disk 1).
  119.  
  120.         2. Copy the program MAD16.SYS located in your Sound Card device driver
  121.            diskette to the OS/2 Warp "kicker" diskette labeled "Diskette for
  122.            CD-ROM (Disk 1)".

  124.         3. EDIT config.sys to add the following line immediately before the
  125.            LIBPATH= statement:

  161. PART 3 - CD-ROM Drive Interface
  162.  
  163.         Interfacing a CD-ROM drive to your Sound Card:
  164.  
  165.         To interface/connect your new or existing CD-ROM drive to your
  166.         sound card, please follow the simple steps below.
  167.  
  168.         If you are interfacing an existing CD-ROM drive to your sound card,
  169.         you only need to follow steps 1 and 2 below since you should already
  170.         have your existing CD-ROM driver setup in your CONFIG.SYS file.
  171.         However, if your are interfacing a new CD-ROM drive, you will need
  172.         to follow all 3 steps below; in which case, it is recommended that
  173.         your perform step 1 first.

  176.         1. Hardware setup
  177.  
  178.            To connect your CD-ROM drive to your sound card, you will need
  179.            to setup the correct data connector cable from your CD-ROM to
  180.            your sound card. Please refer to your sound card installation
  181.            manual for more details.

  184.         2. Modifying/Setting the MAD16.SYS setup program
  185.  
  186.            To interface your new or existing CD-ROM drive to your Sound Card,
  187.            use an editor to open the CONFIG.SYS file for editing and locate
  188.            the line "BASEDEV=MAD16.SYS..."  This line should be at the first
  189.            line of the file. Insert the following "CDTYPE:" option into the
  190.            line and when completed, it should read:
  191.  
  192.            BASEDEV=MAD16.SYS CDTYPE:X CDBASE:XXX CDIRQ:X
  193.  
  194.            where <model> is the CD-ROM model denoted by the following characters:
  195.                        S       - stands for SONY
  196.                        M       - stands for Mitsumi
  197.                        P       - stands for Panasonic
  198.                        I       - stands for IDE (secondary)
  199.  
  200.            For example, the following enables the interface for a SONY IDE CD-ROM.

  202.            BASEDEV=MAD16.SYS CDTYPE:I CDBASE:170 
  203.  
  204.            If the above MAD16.SYS line is not located, proceed to PART 1 of
  205.            this document for details on installing the Sound Card setup program.
  206.  
  207.            Save the file and proceed to install the CD-ROM driver if needed.

  210.         3. Installing the CD-ROM driver
  211.  
  212.            Open the Selective Install program located in the System Setup
  213.            folder and click on the icon next to the "CD-ROM Device Support"
  214.            entry.  A window with the list of OS/2 supported CD-ROM drivers
  215.            will appear. Select (click on) the CD-ROM driver name belonging
  216.            to your CD-ROM model and click on OK to confirm. Click on OK to
  217.            start your CD-ROM driver installation.
  218.  
  219.            If you have already successfully connected your CD-ROM drive
  220.            to your sound card as detailed in your installation manual, you
  221.            may shut down OS/2 and reboot your system for the changes to
  222.            take effect. If not, please proceed to connect your CD-ROM drive
  223.            to your sound card after shutting down OS/2 and switching off
  224.            your system.

  254.            that the drive is compatible with any of the above MAKE and MODELs.
  255.            Contact the CD-ROM manufacturer for details on the compatibility of
  256.            your drive. If your drive is compatible, the drive may be specified
  257.            as the appropriate TYPE in the CDTYPE option.

  261. PART 4 - Options for MAD16.SYS Sound Card Setup Program
  262.  
  263.         The following lists the available options for the MAD16.SYS
  264.         sound card setup program.
  265.  
  266.         MODE:     wss, sb            (default Windows Sound System)
  267.         BASE:     220, 240           (for Sound Blaster mode, default 220)
  268.                   530, E80, F40, 604 (for Windows Sound System mode, default 530)
  269.                   Choosing 530 or E80 for WSS gives 220 for Sound Blaster.
  270.                   Choosing 604 or F40 for WSS gives 240 for Sound Blaster.
  271.                   E80 and F40 are valid only with version 929/924 of the OPTi part.

  306. PART 5 - How to Reconfig the Hardware Settings
  307.  
  308.         Type "c:\sound16\minstall" and enter, then follow the directions from
  309.         Part 1, step 8.  Directory "SOUND16" was created in root directoy during
  310.         the first installation process.  It contains the same files as the 
  311.         installation disk.
  312.  
  313. PART 6 - WIN-OS/2 support 
  314.  
  315.          Run MINSTALL and select OPTi WIN-OS/2 Audio Driver to install for
  316.          WIN-OS/2 support.
  317.          Before starting a WIN-OS/2 session, be sure to close all OS/2 Audio
  318.          applications.
  319.  
  320. PART 7 - MPU401 support
  321.  
  322.          MPU401 interface is currently supported under WIN-OS/2 environment
  323.          only. By default, MPU401 interface is disabled. MINSTALL does not 
  324.          add any MPU401 hardware settings in config.sys. To run MPU401 
  325.          applications under WIN-OS/2, MPU401 settings must be added using
  326.          an editor in config.sys after installation.  Use an editor to
  327.          open config.sys. Find the line 
  328.                 BASEDEV=MAD16.SYS...
  329.  
  330.          Add the MPU401 settings at the end of the line. The following lists 
  331.          the available MPU401 options for the MAD16.SYS sound card setup 
  332.          program: 
  333.                  MPU:     Y, N (Enable or Disable MPU401 interface)
  334.                  MPUBASE: 330, 320, 300 (Make sure there is no conflict with
  335.                                          another device on the system)
  336.                  MPUIRQ:  9, 5, 7       (Make sure there is no conflict with 
  337.                                          another device on the system)
  338.         For example, add MPU:Y MPUBASE:330 MPUIRQ:9 at the end of the line to
  339.         enable MPU401 at base address 330 and irq 9.
  340.         Save the changes and shutdown the system. 
  341.  
  342.         There is no MPU401 support for 928. 
  343.  
  344. PART 8 - Known Problems
  345.         - WIN-OS/2 support for 924 is not fully implemented. Currently,
  346.           924 WIN-OS/2 support is using a 929 Windows driver. This is 
  347.           just a temporary solution before the 924 Windows driver is
  348.           updated in the next release. This 929 Windows driver can work 
  349.           for 924 if the hardware is set to Windows Sound System Mode 
  350.           which is by default in OS/2. However, if the user DUAL boot 
  351.           to DOS, and run Windows, this 929 Windows driver may not work
  352.           for 924. 
  353.  
  354. PART 9 - Brief Trouble-Shooting Session
  355.  
  356.         Problem:  OS/2 cannot detect your sound card and/or CD-ROM
  357.         Solution: Ensure that the BASEDEV=MAD16.SYS... line is located  
  358.                   immediately before the LIBPATH= statement:
  359.  
  360.         Problem:  No startup sound when starting OS/2
  361.         Solution: Check if System Sound is enabled
  362.  
  363.         Problem:  Sounds keep repeating
  364.         Solution: This is due to an interrupt conflict on your system. To
  365.                   use a different interrupt selection, open the CONFIG.SYS
  366.                   file for editing and change the SBIRQ option in the
  367.                   MAD16.SYS line to a different interrupt. 
  368.  
  369.         Problem:  DOS games do not work under OS/2 DOS session
  370.         Solution: Run OS/2 Add Programs located in the System Setup folder
  371.                   to ask OS/2 to add the set of DOS games on your system.
  372.                   This allows OS/2 to setup the DOS session settings best
  373.                   suited for your individual games such as DOOM.
  374.  
  375.                   If the DOS game still does not run, this may be due to
  376.                   the incompatibility of the game with OS/2. Consult the
  377.                   OS/2 newsgroup - comp.os.os2.games on the internet for
  378.                   FAQs relating to this subject, or the FTP site -
  379.                   hobbes.nmsu.edu.
  380.  
  381.         Problem:  IDE CD-ROM does not work
  382.         Solution: Ensure that the IDE CD-ROM jumper is closed on your sound
  383.                   card. Consult your sound card manual for details.
  384.         
  385.         Problem:  Compact Disc player does not generate sound.
  386.         Solution: Go to Digital Audio. Under OPTIONS, select Monitor input.
  387.         
  388.         Problem:  The CD ROM device drivers for PANASONIC CR 562/563 and
  389.                   IDE cdrom drives that ship with OS/2 WARP for Windows,
  390.                   do not work. 
  391.         Solution: The drivers that ship with OS/2 WARP "FullPack" fix this 
  392.                   problem.
  393.         
  394.         Problem:  MINSTALL did not add the "BASEDEV=MAD16.SYS.." statement
  395.                   to config.sys.
  396.         Solution: Reduce the length "LIBPATH=.." statement in config.sys to
  397.                   255 characters or less.
