- The READ-ME file: Some notes that may help or amuse you
-
- %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
-
-
- This demo may work just fine if you run the executable straight from the
- CD-ROM. If you would like to increase the playback performance of this
- interactive movie, please follow these instructions for installing some
- files to your hard drive.
-
- From the Program Manager, click on the File menu, and select "Run".
- Type the letter of your CD-ROM drive (typically D) followed by a colon,
- backslash, and SETUP
-
- Example: D:\SETUP
-
- This will guide you through a very simple procedure to install The Vortex.
-
-
- Whether or not you have installed Vortex files, you must have QuickTime for
- Windows (QTW) on your system. We provide QTW version 2.0 for you to install.
- After The Vortex is installed, you'll see a program icon called "Setup QTW 2.0"
- in the VIRTUAL CINEMA program group. Double-click this icon to setup
- QuickTime for Windows version 2.0. This procedure will erase any previous
- version of QTW you may have installed.

-
-
-
- Thank you for viewing this demo of The Vortex:Quantum Gate II. The following
- notes, take from the full commercial version, may help you run this and other
- multimedia titles
-
- This Virtual Cinema(TM) movie represents the culmination of years of effort,
- exploration and design of our interactive film experience.
-
- As a state-of-the-art multimedia title, this program will make heavy demands
- on your computer. We have done our best to address the limitations of most
- systems, and to take advantage of all available tricks. The notes in this
- file offer additional suggestions for things that you may do to increase your
- enjoyment of this and other multimedia titles.
-
- The Vortex uses Apple(TM) QuickTime for Windows(R) technology and
- Microsoft(TM) Video for Windows(R) technology.

- ** BASIC NOTES **
- ** **
- **********************
-
-
-
- The Vortex works best on MPC-2 systems. This means you should have
- the following as a minimum system configuration:
-
- 486/SX/25 MHz, 8 MB RAM, 640x480x256 display, 16-bit sound card,
- and a double-speed (300Kb/sec) CD-ROM drive.
-
- If your system has more RAM, 16- or 24-bit color, local-bus video, or
- a wave table synthesizer, The Vortex will exploit these capabilities
- and you'll enjoy the movie even more. In addition, if your processor
- is designated "DX" or "DX2", the movie will execute with much greater
- performance.
-
-
-
- VIDEO QUALITY versus PERFORMANCE
- ================================
-
- The Vortex looks and performs best when your video monitor is set to 640x480
- resolution, 65,536 colors (16 bit) and small fonts. (All common resolutions
- and bit depths are supported).
-
- If your system has 8 MB of RAM or less and you find the movie to be sluggish,
- try switching your video mode to 256 colors (8 bit). This places lower memory
- demands on the system, and it will be less likely to swap portions of the
- program to hard disk in order to accommodate the greater display quality.
-
- If your video card is set to 16 or 17 million colors (24 bit) and you find the
- movie to be sluggish, try switching your video mode to 65,536 colors (16 bit).
- This eliminates conversion of 16-bit graphics to your 24-bit settings.
-
-
-
- MUSIC (MIDI)
- ============
-
- The Vortex uses both digital audio and MIDI to play the music that you hear.
-
- If you get an error message indicating "this MIDI file may not play properly
- with the current setup", then your Windows MIDI mapper may not be initialized
- properly. The Windows MIDI mapper sends MIDI notes either to an on-board
- synthesizer or to an external synthesizer. If the MIDI map is wrong, the notes
- will be sent to wrong place and no music will be heard.
-
- The MIDI mapper may be accessed from the control panel icon in the Windows
- Program Manager. Open it, find "General MIDI" in the pop-up list, and click
- "Edit". If you get an error message indicating "The current MIDI setup
- references a MIDI device which is not installed on your system", then this
- is definitely the source of the problem. Click "Yes" to continue past this
- message. Then, (whether you got this message or not), click on the first
- "port name" to bring up a sub-menu. You should see an entry with "FM" or
- "synth" or "sapi" somewhere in the name -- "Yamaha" or "Voyetra" may also
- appear in this line -- click on the entry. Repeat this for at least the
- first ten entries in the table; if you got the "references a MIDI device
- not installed" message earlier, repeat this for all 16 entries. Then try
- The Vortex again.
-
-
-
- MULTI-TASKING
- =============
-
- The Vortex, like other Windows programs, will allow you to switch between
- different Windows programs. Be aware, however, that if you have other programs
- running (even File Manager), they may compete for vital system resources such
- as available memory and CPU cycles, resulting in slower performance. For best
- results, make sure that The Vortex is the only program running.
-
-
-
- HINTS & TRICKS
- ==============
-
- The F12 key may be used at any time to QUIT The Vortex immediately.
- Otherwise, to quit, move your cursor towards the top of the display
- area until it turns into a small blue-and-white vortex symbol, then
- click. You will be taken to a screen that has a QUIT button.
-
- Clicking on a video clip using the left mouse button causes the entire title
- to pause; another left-click anywhere will resume the movie. Clicking on a
- video clip using the right mouse button will jump to the next video clip in
- that scene; this gives you the ability to "fast forward" through a scene if
- you have seen it on a previous viewing.
-
- If, when your computer boots up, there is a menu of options for you to choose
- the boot-up configuration, then there is a chance that the drive-letter of
- your CD-ROM may change between configurations. The Vortex will ask you for
- the new drive-letter if it can't find the old one.

-
- MISCELLANEOUS TRICKS TO ADDRESS PERFORMANCE ISSUES
- ==================================================
-
- Swap File
- ---------
-
- Windows multimedia titles that use video will run much better if your swap
- file -- Virtual Memory -- is set to 20MB Permanent. The "Permanent" option
- is more important than the size, which should be anywhere from 4MB to 20MB.
-
- If you have 8MB or less of RAM, and your virtual memory swap file is
- "temporary", then you may experience long "swap" periods where nothing happens
- on the screen but you can hear your disk drive clicking like mad. This
- indicates that you may benefit from changing your swap file settings.
-
- The controls to examine and change this are found in the "Enhanced"
- control panel, under the "Virtual Memory..." button. There are "Help" buttons
- throughout this control panel that will provide much more help than can be
- given here.
-
-
- SmartDrv
- --------
-
- SmartDrv is a program that is delivered with MS-DOS. It provides "caching"
- of data from hard drives and CD-ROMs, in order to speed up file access and
- throughput. If your computer is configured to use this program, it is
- installed automatically every time you turn on or restart your computer, and
- it does its job invisibly. Chances are that SmartDrv IS installed on your
- machine, via a command in your CONFIG.SYS file. There are many, many different
- ways to setup SmartDrv, and it is difficult to predict what will be optimal
- for your system. Sometimes the optimum is found by turning off SmartDrv
- entirely. The following is a very general guideline that helps most common
- configurations.
-
- If you are running Windows on an 8 MB system with more than 256 colors
- (16- or 24-bit color) you may encounter problems if running SMARTDRV
- with default settings. Ordinarily SMARTDRV reserves 2MB of memory (XMS)
- and this memory is not available to Windows programs. We recommend
- changing your SMARTDRV settings (by editing your config.sys file) to:
-
- SMARTDRV 2048 256
-
- For more information on these settings and their effect, type 'help smartdrv'
- from your DOS directory.
-
-
- CD-ROM buffers
- --------------
-
- If you are experience continual performance problems playing video from a
- CD but not from your hard drive, you may want to try increasing the buffers
- for your CD-ROM drive. To do this, edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, and on the
- "mscdex" line change the /m:10 to /m:15
-
- Example: c:\DOS\mscdex\mvcd001 /m:15
-
-
-
- WINDOWS DISPLAY DRIVERS
- =======================
-
- It is very important that your graphics drivers are up to date. We have
- discovered through our testing that the Windows drivers that come with
- graphics cards are frequently obsolete. Please contact the manufacturer
- of your graphics card to inquire about the latest version of drivers.
-
-
-
- CD-ROM DRIVE CAPACITY
- =====================
-
- The Vortex is shipped on three CD-ROM discs, each with a capacity of 650 MB.
- This the larger of two standards that have been in use for a number of years
- now, the smaller being a 550 MB disc (both discs are identical in physical
- size -- 12 cm diameter). We have heard reports of some older CD-ROM drives
- that can only read the first 550 MB of the larger discs. We have not been
- able to find such a drive for testing, but have taken measures to cover this
- eventuality. We have placed files that are not absolutely essential to the
- movie's narrative structure into the space between 550 and 650 MB.
- Specifically, a large portion of the digital-audio formatted music,
- plus several scenes that represent "flashbacks" to Quantum Gate I reside there.
- If you have such a drive, we expect that the only effect you will notice is the
- absence of music under some of the interface screens, and the absence of some
- "dream-flashbacks" (although you may not actually notice their absence).
-
- If you would like to test your CD-ROM drive for this limitation, enter the
- following command from DOS (assuming your CD-ROM drive letter is D)
-
- DIR D: /S
-
- Many files will scroll by as a directory of the entire CD-ROM is shown. When
- it is done, there will be a total number of bytes shown. For disc 1, the
- total should be greater than 649,000,000. For disc 2, greater than 627,000,000
- and for disc 3, greater than 593,000,000.
-
-
-
- CHANGES TO YOUR SYSTEM
- ======================
-
- ...are kept to a minimum. We do NOT change your CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT
- in any way. We make the following additions to your WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI:
-
- added to WIN.INI:
- (example) [Vortex]
- ASSETS=d:\vortexd -- your CD-ROM drive letter
- EXECUTABLE=c:\vortex -- the directory you installed to
- NoQTPreload=1 -- advanced user flag, see below.
- added to SYSTEM.INI:
- [drivers]
- (example) VIDC.HYPE=c:\vortex\msvidc.drv -- the MS video decompressor
-
- These do not change the operation of any software you may currently have
- installed; they provide information to VORTEX.EXE on where to find its parts.
-
- The file 'INSTALL.LOG' will also be found in the install directory. It lists
- all the files installed by The Vortex installation, and all of the changes made
- to the windows .INI files.
-
-
-
- ASSETS INSTALLED TO YOUR HARD DRIVE
- ===================================
-
- The following directories are copied to the Vortex directory on your hard
- drive, in order to improve performance. If you are really hurting for disk
- space, you may delete these and still be able to run The Vortex, but
- certain areas will run slower as the program pulls these frequently
- accessed files from CD-ROM.
-
- \BITMAPS -- interface screens
-
- \C
- MIDI -- MIDI formatted music
- SPRITES -- dialog boxes and help screen popups
- ACT_ICON -- icons, used extensively throughout the title
- \SYSTEM -- error dialogs and fonts
-
-
-
- DE-INSTALLATION
- ===============
-
- If you'd like to remove The Vortex from your hard drive, simply delete the
- directory into which you installed it, along with all its subdirectories.
- The changes to WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI will not affect your other programs
- in any way. Upon re-booting Windows, you may see an error message about a
- driver it cannot find -- you may ignore the message. To prevent it from
- happening again, delete the line VIDC.HYPE=c:\vortex\msvidc.drv from the
- [drivers] section of your SYSTEM.INI file.
-
-
-
- MULTIMEDIA DATA FILES:
- =====================
-
- All movie files (.mov) are compressed using the SuperMac Compact Video
- compressor that comes with the QuickTime for Windows developers kit. These
- movies can be played using the QTW movie viewer application.
-
- Most voiceover, music and sound effects are stored as QuickTime for Windows
- movies that have no video component. The extension of these files is set
- to .AMV, to indicate an Audio Movie; these are playable as noted in the
- previous paragraph.
-
- A few sound effects are uncompressed wave files (.WAV) and can be played
- with the Windows Media Player application.
-
- All of the bitmap graphics used in The Vortex are compressed using the
- Microsoft Video 1 compressor. If you should wish to see the graphics
- outside of the title, you will need to have Microsoft Video for Windows
- installed, and you will need to use the program ICMAPP to view them. On
- disc I of The Vortex, there is a directory titled WINVIDEO that contains
- the full run-time installation package for Microsoft Video for Windows
- version 1.1.
-
- MIDI files have been authored for compatibility with General MIDI compatible
- synthesizers. Channels 1 thru 10 contain all note information and no notes
- will be heard on Channels 13 thru 16.
-
-
-
- THE QUICKTIME for WINDOWS VIDEO ARCHITECTURE
- ============================================
-
- This is an excerpt from the QuickTime documentation. It refers to the
- QTW.INI file in your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. If you do not have
- such a file, it is OK to create one.
-
- ; The following lines are used to tell QuickTime for Windows
- ; how to address your computer's video card.
- ; In some cases, the line Optimize=driver may be changed
- ; to read Optimize=hardware. This may provide faster operation
- ; of QuickTime for Windows' MOV files.
- ; If, however, the program appears to "lock up" or otherwise
- ; stop running, you should change the line back to read
- ; Optimize=driver again.
- ; To uncomment a line, remove the semicolon (;) in front of it.
-
- [Options]
- VideoOptimize=DIB
-
- [Video]
- Optimize=driver
-
-
- If you are having problems of video distortion when moving the cursor, try
- adding the following line (or change) to QTW.INI in your windows directory.
-
- [VIDEO]
- OPTIMIZE=DRIVER
