  13. Thank you for purchasing a Canon Bubble Jet Printer.  
  14. This dual-mode BJ Series printer driver is designed to 
  15. function with Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 3.1 and it 
  16. allows you to print documents from any Windows 
  17. application to your Canon Bubble Jet printer.  In 
  18. addition, the correct printer driver configuration is 
  19. automatically installed based on the version of Windows 
  20. you are using.

  23. and virtually trouble-free operation.

  26. help you to use your BJ Series printer driver software.  
  27. As with most software and hardware products, some 
  28. information is made available after the development of 
  29. the instruction manual such as "Windows Print Guide".
  30. Updated information regarding your printer is provided 
  31. in this README file.

  37. CANON SOFTWARE LICENCE AGREEMENT

  39. IMPORTANT:
  40. READ THIS AGREEMENT BEFORE INSTALLING THE PRINTER 
  41. DRIVER FOR BUBBLE-JET PRINTER.  BY INSTALLING THE 
  42. PRINTER DRIVER FOR BUBBLE-JET PRINTER, YOU ARE 
  43. DEEMED TO AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THIS AGREEMENT.
  44.  
  45. This legal document is a licence agreement between you 
  46. and Canon Inc. ("Canon").  BY INSTALLING THE PRINTER 
  47. DRIVER FOR BUBBLE-JET PRINTER (THE "SOFTWARE"), YOU ARE 
  48. DEEMED TO AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS OF THIS 
  49. AGREEMENT.  IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO THE TERMS OF THIS 
  50. AGREEMENT, DO NOT INSTALL THE SOFTWARE AND PROMPTLY 
  51. RETURN THE CANON DISK TO THE PLACE WHERE YOU OBTAINED 
  52. IT FOR A REFUND BEFORE THEY ARE USED.
  53.  
  54. In consideration of the right to use the SOFTWARE, you 
  55. agree to abide by the terms and conditions of this 
  56. Agreement.
  57.  
  58. 1. GRANT OF LICENCE: Canon grants you the personal, 
  59.    non-exclusive right to use the SOFTWARE only on a 
  60.    single computer.  You may physically transfer the 
  61.    SOFTWARE from one computer to another provided that 
  62.    the SOFTWARE is used on only one computer at any time.  
  63.    You may not install or use the SOFTWARE on a network, 
  64.    multiple CPU, multiple site arrangement, or any other 
  65.    hardware configuration where the SOFTWARE is 
  66.    accessible to more than one CPU or to more than one 
  67.    user.  You shall not assign, sublicence, sell, rent, 
  68.    lease, loan, convey or transfer to any third party, 
  69.    or send or bring the SOFTWARE out of the country 
  70.    where you originally obtain it to other countries 
  71.    without required authorization of applicable 
  72.    governments, or copy, duplicate, translate or convert 
  73.    to another programming language the SOFTWARE or 
  74.    accompanying documentation, except as expressly 
  75.    provided herein.  
  76.    You shall not alter, modify, disassemble, decompile 
  77.    or otherwise reverse engineer the SOFTWARE or 
  78.    accompanying documentation and you also shall not 
  79.    have any third party to do so.
  80.  
  81. 2. BACK-UP COPY: You may make one copy of the SOFTWARE 
  82.    solely for a back-up purpose or copy the SOFTWARE onto 
  83.    the permanent storage device (e.g. a hard disk) of 
  84.    your computer and retain the original for a back-up 
  85.    purpose.  Any other copying of the SOFTWARE is a 
  86.    violation of this Agreement.  You must reproduce and 
  87.    include the copyright notice on the back-up copy.
  88.  
  89. 3. SUPPORT AND UPDATE: Canon, Canon's subsidiary, their 
  90.    distributor or dealer is not responsible for 
  91.    maintaining or helping you to use the SOFTWARE.  
  92.    No updates, fixes or support will be made available 
  93.    for the SOFTWARE.
  94.  
  95. 4. LIMITED WARRANTY AND DISCLAIMER OF INDEMNITY: Canon, 
  96.    Canon's subsidiary, their distributor or dealer will 
  97.    not guarantee uninterrupted service, or absence or 
  98.    correction of errors.  Therefore, the SOFTWARE is 
  99.    licenced on an "AS IS" basis without warranty of any
  100.    kind.  
  101.    The disk on which the SOFTWARE is recorded is 
  102.    warranted against defective material or workmanship 
  103.    under normal use for a period of ninety (90) days 
  104.    from the date you purchased the same as evidenced by 
  105.    a receipt or otherwise.  
  106.    The limited warranty does not apply if the failure of 
  107.    the disk resulted from accident, abuse or 
  108.    misapplication of the SOFTWARE and shall not extend 
  109.    to anyone other than the original user of the 
  110.    SOFTWARE.  CANON, CANON'S SUBSIDIARY, THEIR 
  111.    DISTRIBUTOR OR DEALER DISCLAIMS ALL IMPLIED 
  112.    WARRANTIES, INCLUDING ANY WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY 
  113.    OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, WITH RESPECT TO 
  114.    THE SOFTWARE OR ACCOMPANYING DOCUMENTATION.  
  115.    NEITHER CANON, CANON'S SUBSIDIARY, THEIR DISTRIBUTOR 
  116.    NOR DEALER IS LIABLE FOR ANY LOSS OR DAMAGE INCLUDING 
  117.    CONSEQUENTIAL OR INCIDENTAL LOSS OR DAMAGE SUCH AS 
  118.    LOSS OF PROFITS, EXPENSE OR INCONVENIENCE, WHATSOEVER 
  119.    CAUSED BY OR ARISING OUT OF THE SOFTWARE, ACCOMPANYING 
  120.    DOCUMENTATION OR THE USE THEREOF.  
  121.    CANON, CANON'S SUBSIDIARY, THEIR DISTRIBUTOR OR 
  122.    DEALER SHALL HAVE NO OBLIGATION TO INDEMNIFY YOU 
  123.    AGAINST ANY CLAIM OR SUIT BROUGHT BY A THIRD PARTY 
  124.    ALLEGING THAT THE SOFTWARE, ACCOMPANYING DOCUMENTATION 
  125.    OR THE USE THEREOF INFRINGES ANYINTELLECTUAL PROPERTY 
  126.    OF SUCH THIRD PARTY.  
  127.    THE ABOVE IS CANON'S ENTIRE LIABILITY AND YOUR 
  128.    EXCLUSIVE REMEDY IN CONNECTION WITH THE SOFTWARE AND 
  129.    ACCOMPANYING DOCUMENTATION.

  131. 5. TERM: This Agreement is effective upon installing the 
  132.    SOFTWARE and remains in effect until terminated.  
  133.    You may terminate this Agreement by destroying the 
  134.    SOFTWARE and any copy thereof.  This Agreement will 
  135.    also terminate if you fail to comply with any of the 
  136.    terms of this Agreement.  In addition to Canon 
  137.    enforcing their respective legal rights, you must 
  138.    then promptly destroy the SOFTWARE and any copy 
  139.    thereof.
  140.  
  141. 6. U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS NOTICE: The SOFTWARE 
  142.    is provided with RESTRICTED RIGHTS.  Use, duplication 
  143.    or disclosure is subject to restrictions as set forth 
  144.    in either subparagraph (c) (1) (ii) of the Rights in 
  145.    Technical Data and Computer Software clause at 
  146.    DFARs 252.227-7013 or subparagraph (c) (1) and (2) of 
  147.    the Commercial Computer Software Restricted Rights 
  148.    Clause at FAR 52.227-19, as applicable.
  149.  
  150. 7. SEVERABILITY: In the event that provision of this 
  151.    Agreement is declared or found to be illegal by any 
  152.    court or tribunal of competent jurisdiction, such 
  153.    provision shall be null and void with respect to the 
  154.    jurisdiction of that court or tribunal and all the 
  155.    remaining provisions of this Agreement shall remain 
  156.    in full force and effect.

  158. 8. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: BY INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE, YOU 
  159.    ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU HAVE READ THIS AGREEMENT, 
  160.    UNDERSTOOD IT, AND AGREE TO BE BOUND BY ITS TERMS 
  161.    AND CONDITIONS.  YOU ALSO AGREE THAT THIS AGREEMENT 
  162.    IS THE COMPLETE AND EXCLUSIVE STATEMENT OF AGREEMENT 
  163.    BETWEEN YOU AND CANON CONCERNING THE SUBJECT MATTER 
  164.    HEREOF AND SUPERSEDES ALL PROPOSALS OR PRIOR 
  165.    AGREEMENTS, VERBAL OR WRITTEN, AND ANY OTHER 
  166.    COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN YOU AND CANON RELATING TO THE 
  167.    SUBJECT MATTER HEREOF.  
  168.    NO AMENDMENT TO THIS AGREEMENT SHALL BE EFFECTIVE 
  169.    UNLESS SIGNED BY A DULY AUTHORIZED REPRESENTATIVE OF 
  170.    CANON.

  195. 1.0 System Requirements
  196. ================================================
  197. 1. Allow at least 10MB of free hard disk space on the 
  198.    drive which contains your system's TEMP directory.
  199. 2. For Windows 95, the minimum amount of RAM memory 
  200.    required is 8 MB. (16 MB is recommended).
  201. 3. For Windows 3.1, the minimum amount of RAM memory 
  202.    required is 4 MB. (8 MB is recommended.)
  203. 4. Increasing the amount of RAM memory will result in 
  204.    faster printing and reduce compatibility problems 
  205.    with some applications.  As an alternative, you can 
  206.    also increase the amount of virtual memory to reduce 
  207.    the possibility of "low memory" conditions. (Please 
  208.    note that this method does not improve printing 
  209.    performance.)

  212. 2.0 For Windows 95 Users
  213. ================================================
  214. 2.1 Specific Information for Windows 95 Users
  215.  
  216. 1. If you upgrade the BJ Series printer driver 
  217.    from a previous version, choose Replace the 
  218.    existing BJ Series printer driver, even though 
  219.    Windows 95 recommends that you keep the 
  220.    existing printer driver.  Or, remove the older 
  221.    version of the BJ Series driver before 
  222.    performing new installation.  Otherwise the 
  223.    new BJ Series printer driver may not be updated 
  224.    correctly.
  225.  
  226. 2. If you reinstall the BJ Series printer driver, 
  227.    be sure to remove the BJ Series driver which 
  228.    has been installed before performing reinstallation.
  229.  
  230.      - For more details on the installation 
  231.        procedure, see the section 2.2 
  232.        "Installing the BJ Series Printer Driver". 
  233.      - For more details on the uninstallation

  238. 2.2 Installing the BJ Series Printer Driver
  239.  
  240. To use this BJ Series printer driver with software 
  241. application packages that operate with Windows 95, 
  242. use the following installation procedure.
  243.  
  244.  - This section describes the installation procedure 
  245.    when you download the BJ Series printer driver from 
  246.    a web site.  For more details on the installation 
  247.    procedure using the supplied CD-ROM or floppy disks 
  248.    provided with the product, refer to the instruction 
  249.    manual such as "Windows Print Guide".
  250.  - When you download the BJ Series printer driver, we 
  251.    recommend that you create the installation disks 
  252.    using commercially available floppy disks, and follow 
  253.    the procedure below.
  254.  - If your printer can print in colour, the driver is 
  255.    automatically set for printing in colour.  
  256.    Otherwise, the driver is automatically set for 
  257.    greyscale printing.
  258.  - If you are using the Browse method of installing this 
  259.    BJ Series printer driver from the Add Printer Wizard, 
  260.    be sure to select the file named CANONBJ.INF from the 
  261.    printer driver files supplied with your printer.  
  262.    Do not select the file named OEMSETUP.INF.
  263.    Otherwise the Cartridge Detection feature will not 
  264.    function properly.
  265.  
  266.   1) Choose Settings from the Start menu.
  267.   2) Choose Printers.
  268.   3) Double-click on the Add Printer icon.
  269.   4) Click on the Next button.
  270.   5) Click on the Have Disk button.
  271.   6) Insert Disk 1 into the floppy disk drive.  
  272.      If the floppy disk drive is Drive A, click on the 
  273.      OK button and proceed with the next step.  
  274.      Otherwise, type the letter name of your floppy disk 
  275.      drive (such as "B:"), and click on the OK button.
  276.   7) Choose the name of your printer, and click on the 
  277.      Next button.
  278.   8) Make sure that LPT1: Printer Port is highlighted, 
  279.      and click on the Next button.
  280.   9) Click on the Finish button.
  281.  10) Follow the instructions on the screen until the 
  282.      installation procedure is completed.  
  283.      An icon for your printer will then appear in the 
  284.      Printers window.

  287. 2.3 Uninstalling the BJ Series Printer Driver
  288.  
  289. To uninstall the BJ Series Printer Driver, follow the procedure below.
  290.  
  291.   1) Choose Printers from Settings in the Start menu.
  292.   2) Click on the printer name you wish to delete in the 
  293.      Printers window.
  294.   3) Choose Delete from the File menu.
  295.   4) When the confirmation message is displayed, 
  296.      click on the Yes button.

  299. 3.0 For Windows 3.1 Users
  300. ================================================
  301. 3.1 Specific Information for Windows 3.1 Users
  302.  
  303. 1. If you upgrade the BJ Series printer driver, 
  304.    be sure to remove the older version of the 
  305.    BJ Series driver from the Windows Control 
  306.    Panel before performing new installation.  
  307.    (If you upgrade the BJ Series printer driver 
  308.    by overwriting the older version, the new 
  309.    installation may not be performed correctly.) 
  310.  
  311. 2. If you reinstall the BJ Series printer driver, 
  312.    be sure to remove the BJ Series driver which 
  313.    has been installed from the Windows Control 
  314.    Panel before performing reinstallation.
  315.  
  316. 3. If you install this BJ Series printer driver in 
  317.    Windows 3.1 and later upgrade your system to 
  318.    Windows 95, be sure to reinstall this BJ Series 
  319.    printer driver in Windows 95.
  320.  
  321.      - For more details on the installation 
  322.        procedure, see the section 3.2

  328. 4. When running Windows 3.1 under OS/2, this BJ Series 
  329.    printer driver cannot be used.
  330.  
  331. 5. In Windows 3.1, the Cartridge Detection mechanism is 
  332.    unable to distinguish between a regular colour ink 
  333.    cartridge and a photo colour ink cartridge.  Be sure 
  334.    to install the correct ink cartridge to avoid 
  335.    printing problems.

  338. 3.2 Installing the BJ Series Printer Driver
  339.  
  340. To use this BJ Series printer driver with software 
  341. application packages that operate with Windows 95, 
  342. use the following installation procedure.
  343.  
  344.  - This section describes the installation procedure 
  345.    when you download the BJ Series printer driver from 
  346.    a web site.  For more details on the installation 
  347.    procedure using the supplied CD-ROM or floppy disks 
  348.    provided with the product, refer to the instruction 
  349.    manual such as "Windows Print Guide".
  350.  - When you download the BJ Series printer driver, we 
  351.    recommend that you create the installation disks

  374.      list of Installed Printers.  
  375.   8) When your printer is connected to your computer's 
  376.      LPT1 port, proceed with the next step.  
  377.      Otherwise, click on the Connect button to display 
  378.      the Connect dialogue box which displays a list of 
  379.      available output ports to which your printer can be 
  380.      connected. (Only those ports that begin with LPT 
  381.      can be used.)  Click on the LPT port to which your 
  382.      printer is connected, and click on the OK button to 
  383.      return to the Printers dialogue box.
  384.   9) Restart Windows to utilize the Cartridge Detection 
  385.      feature since the SYSTEM.INI file is modified.

  388. 3.3 Uninstalling the BJ Series Printer Driver
  389.  
  390. To uninstall the BJ Series printer driver, follow the 
  391. procedure below.
  392.  
  393.   1) Double-click on the Control Panel icon in the Main 
  394.      program group.
  395.   2) Double-click on the Printers icon.
  396.   3) Choose the BJ Series printer driver you wish to 
  397.      delete, and click on the Remove button.  
  398.   4) When the confirmation message is displayed, click 
  399.      on the Yes button.
  400.  
  401.  
  402. 4.0 Cautions, Limitations and Restrictions
  403. ================================================
  404. 4.1 During Installation Procedure
  405.  
  406. 1. If you receive a message which indicates that the 
  407.    BJ Series printer driver is already in use during 
  408.    the installation procedure, close all open 
  409.    applications and try installing the printer driver 
  410.    again.
  411.  
  412. 2. If you cancel the installation procedure before all 
  413.    necessary files of this BJ Series printer driver are 
  414.    copied, the printer driver cannot be installed 
  415.    completely, even though it appears in the list of 
  416.    Installed Printers.  
  417.    You must therefore reinstall the BJ Series printer 
  418.    driver from the first step described in the 
  419.    instruction manual such as "Windows Print Guide" 
  420.    and complete the installation procedure.
  421.  
  422. --------------------------------------------------
  423. 4.2 During Printing Procedure
  424.  
  425. 1. If your printer is capable of printing in colour, 
  426.    do not attempt to print in Colour mode when a black 
  427.    ink cartridge is installed in your printer.  The 
  428.    results will be unpredictable.
  429.  
  430. 2. After printing an image with Photo Colour ink, please 
  431.    allow the ink to dry for 15-30 minutes.
  432.  
  433. 3. For some printer models, the Cartridge Detection 
  434.    feature may not function if you have used the BJ 
  435.    Setup Utility to set the Printer Control Mode to the 
  436.    Automatic mode.  
  437.    To use the Cartridge Detection feature, set the 
  438.    Printer Control Mode to either LQ or BJ mode.
  439.  
  440. 4. Some thin lines which are not solid black may not 
  441.    print using the BJ Series printer driver's default 
  442.    settings.  
  443.    To work around this, set the Photo setting to the 
  444.    Print Model in the Graphics tab.  This will use an 
  445.    alternative dot-placement method that produces better 
  446.    results.
  447.  
  448. 5. A blank dialogue box may appear when you are using 
  449.    Manual Feed mode.  When this dialogue box appears, 
  450.    insert a sheet of paper and click OK.
  451.  
  452. 6. If you select Automatic from Print Model in Graphics 
  453.    tab sheet or Auto from Halftoning in Custom Setting 
  454.    dialogue and start printing, some part of the printed 
  455.    image which should be printed with Diffusion 
  456.    halftoning may be printed with Fine halftoning.
  457.    To correct this problem, set Diffusion to the 
  458.    Halftoning in Custom Setting dialogue.
  459.  
  460. 7. Some Bar Code TrueType fonts may be printed with 
  461.    some extraneous lines.
  462.  
  463. 8. When sharing a document file among several computer 
  464.    systems, make sure that all the fonts used by the 
  465.    document are installed on all computer systems.  
  466.    Otherwise, some text fonts will not be printed 
  467.    correctly.
  468.  
  469. 9. This BJ Series printer driver supports a special 
  470.    transparent mode when printing overlapping bitmapped 
  471.    graphics.  However, some applications (such as 
  472.    PhotoShop V3.0, Claris Works and possibly other) 
  473.    do not support the transparent mode correctly, and 
  474.    this can cause printing errors.  Other applications 
  475.    incorrectly set the background colour for bitmapped 
  476.    graphics, and this can also cause printing errors.
  477.    To work around these problems, the printer driver 
  478.    will automatically add the following lines to your 
  479.    system's WIN.INI file when it is installed.
  480.     [CanonDriver]
  481.     ForceOpaque=1
  482.     PhotoShopBugFix=1
  483.    To disable these work-arounds, you can edit the 
  484.    WIN.INI file and change the "1" to "0" and then 
  485.    restart Windows.  For most applications, you should 
  486.    leave these items set to "1".
  487.  
  488. 10. A known problem in Corel Mosaic Version 5.0 may 
  489.     cause incomplete printed output.  Please contact 
  490.     Corel Corporation for an update.
  491.  
  492. 11. When printing from Adobe Photoshop, select the RGB 
  493.     mode rather than the CMYK mode to avoid printing 
  494.     some incorrect colours.
  495.  
  496. 12. Banner Printing Tip
  497.     (Banner-capable printer models only)
  498.  
  499.      - MS Publisher 97
  500.        To avoid some overlapping printed results between
  501.        page boundaries, select File/Print/Tile Printing 
  502.        Options and set the value of Overlap tiles to 0.
  503.  
  504.      - Print Shop Ensemble III
  505.        To avoid any gaps between pages, use Standard 
  506.        quality instead of Draft.
  507.  
  508.      - For best results, you should only print one copy 
  509.        of a banner at a time.  If you perform multiple 
  510.        copies, the printing results may be unpredictable.
