Shareware Reminder
THIS PROGRAM IS SHAREWARE, IT IS NOT FREE! YOU CAN TEST IT FOR 3 WEEKS. IF YOU LIKE IT, PLEASE REGISTER YOUR COPY FOR $20. `
If you think this is too much, send me a postcard of your hometown for a 'light' registration. N
Registering removes all Shareware reminders, and lets you edit bigger memos.
The 'light' registration removes all Shareware reminders, enables all features (like word wrap), and lets you edit 8 times as much as the unregistered version.
Read the (online) documentation (Alt+H, D) for more information. If you want to print the documentation just shell to Dos (Alt+F, D) and use the command:
'type cal.txt > prn'
Then use 'exit' to return to CAL.
How to register
THIS PROGRAM IS SHAREWARE, IT IS NOT FREE! x

Calendar
A dot before the day indicates an event for that day, a single note (music symbol) indicates a memo, while a double note indicates both. You can change this in the configuration.
Right of the screen the weeknumber and date is displayed. JD stands for Julian Day, the daynumber in the year. The other number is the number of days left in the year.

With the Event note Editor you can add notes to your events. Every event can have a different note. The note belonging to the selected event is shown. R
Instead of pressing the Ok button, you can also use Ctrl+Enter to save the note.
Keys
Events
This picklist displays all events for the selected day. Events can be added, edited, or deleted with the appropriate buttons. Every event can have a note of max. 4096 letters. 1
An '*' before the description indicates a note. q
With the 'Show all events' button ALL events can be displayed, pressing it again will show just today's events. Q
With the 'Note' button an additional note can be edited for the selected event. m
With the 'Up' and 'Down' buttons (or Shift+Up/Down arrow keys) the selected event can be moved in the list.
If your event list becomes very full (mine does!) you probably want to postpone some events to the next day. You can do that by changing the date of the event. You can do it a lot faster with 'Postpone event'. Press '+' or the 'Postpone' button, and select the number of days to postpone. The maximum number of days is limited to seven, if you want more, edit the event, and change the date.

Shortcuts
Most buttons or menu-items have shortcuts. For example the shortcut for the File-menu is 'f'. Access it with Alt+F.
For some shortcuts you don't need to use Alt. While you're in a menu, you can select an item with the letter only, you don't need to use Alt. When you're in the Calendar, you can use Alt+A to add an event, but 'a' works too. When you're in the Memo-editor you HAVE to use Alt of course.
Add/Edit event
Description: R
In this dialog the properties for an event can be set. An event needs a description. Make it as descriptive as possible, so you can easily find it again. The maximum description length is 70. If Small
events is on, the length on the screen is 26, but the full length of 70 is available. A little arrow indicates the last visible letter.
Event
type Display ~
There are different kinds of events. Simple events, like weekly or monthly events, and also a few more sophisticated events.
Date
The displayed date is always the selected date, except when 'Show all events' was pressed. v
You can change it to any date, so you don't have to use the calendar to go to a date where you want to add an event.
Display
You can set the start and/or end date for an event.
) Always (Default)
The event is always visible (i.e. if the date matches the event
type). 6
) From (Can be set to default in configuration)
The events is visible from the date in the 'from' field.
The events is visible until the date in the 'to' field.
) From ... to ...
The events is visible from the date in the 'from' field until the date in the 'to' field.
) From ... days back
The event is visible ... days before the selected date. The Event
type is always set to 'Day' and the repeat rate to 1.
Dates must be entered as either dd-mm-yyyy or mm-dd-yyyy, depending on your country settings. The '-' depends on country settings too. Most countries use '-', but e.g. France and Germany use '.', U.K. uses '/'.
The date fields can be changed with the numeric keys, or can simply be changed with the up and down arrow, or gray plus and minus, or left or right mouse button.

Event placement
This temporarily changes the placement of events as set in the configuration.
If you are not satisfied with the result, you can change the position of the event with the 'Up' and 'Down' buttons (or Shift+Up/Down arrow keys).
Event type
If the event type has a '*', the repeat rate can be changed, for example every 2 weeks, or every 3 months.
To do
This event is for things you have "to do". For example, if you have to pay some bills tomorrow, select this day in the calendar (or set the date in the 'date' field), and add a "to do" event. The event is shown on that day only. If you start CAL tomorrow, the event is shown on that day, so you can't forget to pay that bill. If you DO forget, and you start CAL the day after tomorrow, the event is moved to that day. ^
It is possible to start CAL only when there are events today. See the Command
switches.
Year
This event is perfect for birthdays, and other yearly events. If you use labels, you can easily get a list of all birthdays with CALSearch. U
Example: 'Birthday: Peter 1972'. The label is In this case the label is 'Birthday:' "
Month and week
Think of something yourself...
Week
This event is for weekly things, like every Monday, or every 2nd Sunday.
Displaying the same event every day doesn't make much sense. This is event type is useful though if you set the 'repeat every ... days' field. ;
Last/First workday in month
Where workday ranges from Monday to Friday. (
Same day in month
For example every 1st Sunday in a month, every 2nd Wednesday, or every 5th Saturday. Note that not every month has 5 Saturdays... +
Last X day in month
Where X day is a weekday (Sunday..Saturday). This event type is to select, for example, the last Sunday of every month. Another example, to enter an event for the end of daylight saving time, go to the last Sunday in October, add an event with this event type, and set the repeat rate to 12 months
Delete
This dialog is from the time when every event had its own editor. I didn't remove it, it looks nice.
Esc quits.
Cut 'n Paste
Cut 'n paste is very common in editors. CAL supports cut 'n paste too. From version 1.15 you can even cut, copy and paste complete memos. :
Note that you can't copy memos to another file (window).

[X] Extended search (Default is on)
This option determines how CAL responds to Ctrl+Left or Right arrow (Previous or Next Memo). If this option is on, CAL searches through every year to find a Memo. On a slow computer, without a cache or harddisk this may take some time if there are many memos. -
Slow is defined as a 286 without a cache;-)

" This is a strange option... I use my program as a diary, PGP secures the private data. If I exit the program, the calendar file will be encrypted... But not when I walk away (or fall asleep). This switch exits the program and, in my case, starts the encryption. " R
Since version 1.30 CAL has it's own encryption, so this option makes more sense. :
The screensaver must be enabled for this switch to work.
If the screensaver is set to 3 minutes for example, the screen will go black in 3 minutes, after another 3 minutes the program will exit.

[X] Small events (Default is off)
By default events are as wide as the window. This keeps the memo
editor from growing when your screen has more than 25 lines. If you need more space in the memo editor, toggle this option on. F
You can configure CAL to use different settings for different files. i
For a diary, for example, it is best to toggle this option on, so start CAL with a special config-file: .
cal --config c:\cal\diary.cfg c:\cal\diary
This will load diary.cfg as config-file (where you toggled this option on), and it loads diary.cal (the extension is optional, and defaults to '.cal' as calendar-file. I
If you use another file as to do list, you can use something like this: ,
cal --config c:\cal\todo.cfg c:\cal\todo
If you're using Windows (or a menu system), add these commands to a menu, so you don't have to memorize these options. If you're using plain Dos, create a batchfile to execute CAL with the options 5

CAL will change to the previous directory before exiting. This way you can call CAL from a batchfile, 'autoexec.bat' for example, without having to specify any filenames on the command
line. L
If this option is off, you can use relative pathnames (eg ..\default.cal). H
It is best to leave this option on, unless you know what you're doing.

[X] Portable CAL (Default is off)
Although a digital calendar has a lot of advantages, there are some disadvantages too. You can't take it with you as easy a a paper equivalent. A solution would be to run CAL from a floppy, and use it on a computer 'on the road'. This works pretty good, but when you get home you have to copy the data back to your harddisk to make it faster. If you accidentally forget to copy the data to harddisk or vice-versa you'll have two different data-files...
The solution: Portable CAL!
With 'the Portable CAL' all data will be synchronized to floppy. You don't have to check what file is newer, just run CAL... If you want to run CAL on someone else's computer, simply start 'install' from the floppy, and CAL will notice that this is a 'guest computer', and CAL will be temporarily installed. After exiting, the floppy will be updated, and CAL will be removed from the guest computer. M
Portable CAL has another advantage, you'll always have an automatic backup!

Event/Memo indicators
If you don't like my choice of event, memo or event+memo indicators, choose them yourself! The event indicator is displayed when there is an event on that day, memo indicates a memo, and event+memo indicates both. Change the ASCII value of the indicator with the Up or Down arrow, or with the left or right mouse button.
Configuration
Screensaver
Time-out in minutes for the screensaver. A value of 0 disables the screensaver. The default value is 10 minutes, the maximum value is 60 minutes, although this doesn't make much sense.
Date separator
Dates are displayed using a date separator (compare 01-01-1999 with 01/01/1999). This can be changed to anything you like. 9
If the input box is empty, the default setting is used. T
The default can be set with country.sys. Consult your Dos-manual for more details.
Display
Event placement
By default, events are added to the end of the event list. This is the way normal lists (on paper) work.
This default behaviour can be changed to anything you like better. 'First in list' for example ensures that the newly inserted event is on top of the list.
Configuration
Cache
A disk cache is strongly recommended to speed up CAL's performance, especially when you are running CAL from a floppy-disk. A small cache (256 kB) will be sufficient. k
To install the cache that comes with MS-DOS (p) you could add the following command to your AUTOEXEC.BAT:
C:\DOS\SMARTDRV 256 256
Use another path if you installed Dos in another directory. The first value specifies the size (in kB) Smartdrive uses in Dos. The second value specifies the value used in MS-Windows. d
Specifying no parameters lets Smartdrive figure out the best values for your memory-configuration. *
Any other cache will suffice, of course.
Palette Editor
Change the RGB values for any color by selecting the color, and adjusting the RGB values. f
Note that changing these values doesn't have effect in Windows (except when you run CAL fullscreen).

Digraph
I used the same commands to form 'digraphs' as Pegasus Mail. David Harris, the writer of Pegasus Mail will explain how it works: _
Form digraph: this allows you to form a letter from the IBM extended ASCII set by 'describing' it. Enter two character, a base character and a modifier, press Ctrl+G, and the editor will form the correct extended value. Example: to form the '
' character, type "e'" (e-apostrophe) then type Ctrl+G, and the editor will form it. Valid modifiers are: y
char + " forms char-umlaut (eg, a" ->
char + ' forms char-acute (eg, e' ->
char + ` forms char-grave (eg, e` ->
char + ^ forms char-circonflex (eg, o^ ->
char + ~ forms char-tilde (eg, n~ ->
char + / forms char-slash (eg, o/ ->
c + , forms c-cedilla (ie, c, ->
a + o forms a-ring (ie, ao ->

CAL Search
Another search function. The results of the search action are shown in a dialog. m
This search method is very fast, compared to the browser's
search
function, especially with a lot of memos.
What makes this function so special, is the way the data is displayed. If you are using labels, you can simply find exactly what you're looking for.
Press Space, Enter, or double-click with the mouse to exit the dialog and load the selected text, from a memo, event, or event note. Loading the selected text works for registered users only, to encourage registration. h
Just like in the browser you can 'narrow down' the selection with the Search button. This will search all memos belonging to the selection for the search-text. If the search-text isn't found, the memo is removed from the list. If it IS found, nothing changes, the found line isn't added to the list. Only lines containing the first search-text are displayed. J
Note that the 'narrow down' process can be slower than the first search. X
With the Reset button you can start again, it is the same as starting CALSearch again.
The found text is sorted alphabetically, but can be sorted on date too. Pressing a letter will quickly select the first (or next) line starting with the letter. c
An 'M' before the date indicates a memo, 'E' indicates an event, and 'N' indicates an event
note.

Labels
Labels
With labels you can enter any type of information, and display it in an organized format! R
If you want to enter all your relatives' phone numbers, create a label 'PHONE:'. T
Enter this label and the name and number anywhere in a memo, event, or event note.
Example:
Phone: Peter Bel, +31-10-Something
Phone: Rescue, 911
If you want to find my phone number, enter 'phone: peter' as search text in the search dialog. Select Ok and there you have it. D
If you want a list of all phone numbers, just search for 'phone:'. :
Note that the default search method is case insensitive. h
Tip: Use a colon (:) after the label, so you don't find the label when you use it in a plain sentence. }
It is best to enter every label, and its data, on a new, separate line, this way the results will be sorted alphabetically.

-v, --version display version-info
-o, --config <fname> use different config-file
--winlines <lines> any number between 26 and 32
--ignorevideo Don't test number of lines, run anyway
All switches can be specified 'Unix-like', so 'cal -cpt' is the same as
'cal -c -p -t' or 'cal --color --pending --today'.
Most of these switches are self-explaining, but a few will be explained below:
-t, --today
Starts the program if there is anything, an events or memo, today.
-p, --pending
Starts if there are pending memos. This switch looks for memos only!
Both -p and -t are very useful in autoexec.bat. If you use memos to store information you want to keep, you should use -t, or CAL will always find pending memos. If you use memos as 'events', use both the -p and -t switches. F
If shift is down, CAL doesn't check for anything, and doesn't start.
If you don't specify a filename, CAL will check for 'default.cal' in the current directory, unless Start
directory is on.
-l, --lines
Starts the program with specified number of lines. This works on EGA and VGA only.
Lines
EGA
VGA
All these modes can be set in the configuration, but the command line switch overrides it. There are of course much more textmodes. If you want to use those, set the mode before starting CAL. Be sure to set the mode in the configuration to 'Startup'. If you want to use extended textmodes with a mode-number, like 132x43, use the --vidmode <mode> switch. If <mode> is a hex-value use a '_$'. For example --vidmode _$54 sets my videocard to 132x43. Be careful. Do NOT use a random number, or the results will be very unpredictable:)
--winlines
With this switch the number of lines of a Dos-box in Windows can be set. This doesn't work in full-screen mode. I only tested this with Windows NT 3.51, if this works with Win95, Win 3.xx or maybe OS/2, please let me know.
Printer Settings
Set the device or filename to print to, page length (in lines), left margin (in characters) and top margin (in lines). ?

A short, one page report of all events in the selected week. The week starts at the day set in the configuration, either Sunday or Monday. If there isn't enough space to print all events, the last events (of each day) are not printed. The report starts with three calendars, previous month's, this month's, and next month's calendar. >
Long report for selected day

Encrypt/Decrypt
This will either en- or decrypt the current file.
Data is encrypted with the Blowfish algorithm, a strong, fast and still uncracked cipher. For more information look at 'http://www.counterpane.com'. ~
Important! Don't forget your password! If you do forget it, there is no way to 'crack' your file, the used cipher is no toy!
You can't easily change the password of an encrypted file. To do this, first decrypt the file, and encrypt it with a new password.
Goto date
Quickly go to a specific date. The date form is either DD-MM-YYYY or MM-DD-YYYY, depending on your country settings, as is the date-separator, '-' in this example. The date can be entered with the keyboard, but can also be changed with the left and right mouse button, the gray plus and minus or arrow up and down respectively.
Add holidays
With this dialog, a lot of (mostly US) holidays can be inserted in your calendar file. Z
Select the holidays from the left panel, and press SPACE or double click with the mouse.
You can use labels for easy searching. This label ('HOLIDAY: ' by default) is inserted before the holiday, so Easter will look like 'HOLIDAY: Easter'. "
When you're finished, select Ok.
Insert labels
With this menu, pre-defined labels can be inserted into a memo or the Find-dialog of CAL
Search.
Edit labels
With this dialog, the labels for the Insert
labels function can be edited. T
Every label (max 10 characters) can have an optional description of 25 characters.
Scratch pad
Editor for short notes. Notes are stored in SCRATCH.TXT in the CAL directory. This is a regular textfile. B
Modified contents are always saved, also when Escape is pressed.
Keys
Delete event
Like memos, events can be deleted. But they can also be 'documented' or 'marked as seen and done'.
Documented events will be deleted from the event list, but the event (and the event note) will appear at the end of today's memo. A label (Done:) is prepended, so it is easy to get a list of accomplished tasks. l
A marked event won't be visible for the rest of the day. This is nice for repeating events like birthdays. L
Note that you get a warning signal if you try to delete a repeating event.
