  1. WinMidas 2.1 Installation Procedure

  4. 1)  Installing WinMidas 2.1 
  5.  
  6.     PLEASE NOTE>> WinMidas 2.1 MUST BE RUN FROM THE    
  7. \WM21  DIRECTORY, NOT THE \PROGRAMS\WM21 directory or the 
  8. \XYZ\WM21 directory or any such combination.  You will be given the 
  9. opportunity to change the destination directory when WinMidas 2.1 is being 
  10. installed.  This feature was added so that you could install WinMidas 2.1 on 
  11. a drive other than C. But do not change the directory name.  If you change 
  12. the directory to something other than \WM21 then WinMidas 2.1 simply will 
  13. not work properly.

  15.     If you follow the procedures provided below, all necessary files and 
  16. appropriate file commands will be placed in the Windows 3.1 and Windows 
  17. 95 startup structure.

  19. Installing from a Zipped Download File
  20.  
  21.     Obviously, if you are reading this file then you were able to unzip the 
  22. demo file.  You will be installing WinMidas 2.1 from the directory containing 
  23. the unzipped files. Let's call that directory C:\MYDIR.

  25.       Windows 3.1 Installation:
  26.  
  27.     Go to the Windows 3.1 Program Manager and select  File|RUN.  
  28. Type in C:\MYDIR\SETUP in the box provided and RETURN.  Simply 
  29. follow the instructions.

  31.      Windows 95 Installation

  33.     Click Start, click RUN and type in C:\MYDIR\SETUP in the box 
  34. provided and RETURN.  Do NOT use the Windows 95 Install or Add 
  35. Program command.  Simply follow the instructions.

  41.      Windows 3.1 Installation:
  42.  
  43.     Place the disc in the A or B drive.  Go to the Windows 3.1 Program 
  44. Manager and select  File|RUN.  Type in A:SETUP (or B:SETUP) in the box 
  45. provided and RETURN. Simply follow the instructions.

  48.      Windows 95 Installation
  49.  
  50.     Click Start, click RUN and insert A:SETUP (or B:SETUP) in the box 
  51. provided and RETURN.  Do NOT use the Windows 95 Install or Add 
  52. Program command. Simply follow the instructions.

  56. 2)  Starting WinMidas 2.1
  57.  
  58.  
  59.     When WinMidas 2.1 is initiated, you will see a display which may or 
  60. may not quite fill the screen. If not, then maximize the display (800x600 
  61. grid is preferred).  Next, you will see the names of the pull down menu 
  62. selections (File, Setup, Display, Indicators, Hotlists, Help).  First, you must 
  63. select the Setup option to be sure that WinMidas knows where to look for 
  64. the appropriate data.  If you have problems obtaining the dialog boxes 
  65. please go to  4) Potential Problems.  The default directories are:
  66.  
  67.         WinMidas 2.1 Working Directory          C:\WM21
  68.     TC2000 Data Directory            C:\TC2000\DATA
  69.     TC2000CD ROM                D:\TC2000CD
  70.     MetaStock Data Directory        C:\WM21
  71.     ASCII Data Directory            C:\WM21

  73.     If you installed WinMidas on drive C and are happy with the default 
  74. directories, then WinMidas should run smoothly.  If you installed WinMidas 
  75. on the D drive then change the WinMidas working directory to >>D:\WM21 
  76. since all initialization data and ancillary files are stored in this directory.  If 
  77. the drive is other than C: (e.g., D:), then change the MetaStock Data 
  78. Directory to D:\WM21 and the ASCII Data Directory to D:\WM21.  At this 
  79. point do not change the MetaStock file directory to other than WM21.  Wait 
  80. until after you have gone through the Pocket Tutorial (see below), since the 
  81. tutorial procedure uses MetaStock files stored in the \WM21 directory.

  83.     Next, click on File and then on "Primary Hot List".  "Primary Hot List"  
  84. allows you to go to your priority hot list.  The default hot list is DEMO.NAM 
  85. which contains Cisco Systems, Mattel, and General Motors.  Immediately 
  86. the display will fill with the stock data on Cisco Systems.

  88.     At this point click on HELP, then CONTENTS, then POCKET 
  89. TUTORIAL.  Print the Pocket Tutorial, all parts,  so that you may walk your 
  90. way through the use of WinMidas 2.1 features.

  93. 3)  Up To Date MIDAS Analyses and Examples
  94.  
  95.     Our WinMidas web site, WWW.WINMIDAS.COM, provides examples 
  96. for using the WinMidas algorithms.  Three new stocks and an index are 
  97. analyzed on a regular basis and provide a commentary as well as graphical 
  98. interpretation.  In addition, a MIDAS Speaks column is provided which 
  99. provides more indepth analysis of certain features of the MIDAS algorithms 
  100. while applying these to stocks and indices.  The MIDAS Speaks columns, 
  101. which are updated frequently, are archived so that you can review and print 
  102. out the older columns

  105. 4) Potential Problems
  106.  
  107.     The only problem which has been encountered concerns the dialog 
  108. boxes which allow you to insert information or make selections.  If the 
  109. dialog boxes do not appear (e. g., the HELP|ABOUT box cannot be 
  110. displayed) then you have a problem with too many BWCC.DLL files on 
  111. your computer.  These files are widely used by developers.  The most 
  112. recent version should always be in the \Windows\System directory.  Some 
  113. developers place their BWCC.DLL in the Windows directory.  The Windows 
  114. handler will pick up the first BWCC.DLL file it finds in the path.  If this 
  115. version is earlier in time than the one used by WinMidas then the dialog 
  116. boxes may not work properly.

  118.     Borland (the C++ developer) recommends that all BWCC.DLL files 
  119. be deleted from your system except the very latest.  This file should be 
  120. placed in the \Windows\System directory.  Since all BWCC.DLL files are 
  121. backwards compatible, all of your other applications should still work OK.  
  122. As a precaution, you might want to rename them all to BWCC.SAV until 
  123. you are sure that all of your applications work successfully with the latest 
  124. BWCC.DLL file in the \Windows\System directory.

  128.     A user's manual is available from Stokes Fishburne Associates.  This 
  129. manual has many examples to help you use WinMidas 2.1 to it's fullest 
  130. capability.  The cost of the manual is $20 plus $4 shipping and handling.
