  66. NameBase is a program that keeps track of names, addresses, phone
  67. numbers, dates, notes and other miscellaneous data about persons and
  68. organizations.  A unique feature allows you to organize entries into any
  69. category you wish, then view these categories separately or combined.
  70.  
  71. You can assign a person to any number of categories, yet enter their data
  72. only once.
  73.  
  74. NameBase lets you specify any criteria to further limit the records
  75. displayed. You can then view, edit, or print just the records you
  76. selected.  You can also search for any string of characters in all
  77. records.
  78.  
  79. NameBase lets you sort on any field.  You can edit a record in a
  80. spreadsheet-like grid or on a separate edit screen.  Many fields have
  81. user-customizable screen labels.

  83. Various printed reports are included.  There are address books in
  84. different sizes, from full-size to pocket-size.  You can specify the
  85. type of print and starting position for mailing labels and envelopes.

  87. NameBase uses a Microsoft Access database (Access is NOT required), so
  88. it is easy to access your NameBase data using many other products
  89. such as Word, Excel, and Access.  You can even write your own reports
  90. using Access.  Mail merge is a snap using most any word processor.

  123. ===== Installation =====================================

  125. If the NameBase for Windows files are compressed into a single file
  126. such as NAME200.ZIP, you must first uncompress that file into a single
  127. directory on your hard disk, using the PKUNZIP program, the WINZIP
  128. program, or some other program that can "un-zip" files.
  129. After uncompressing follow the directions below.
  130.  
  131. To install the NameBase program, first start Microsoft Windows. Make
  132. sure no other programs are started, such as virus-checking programs or
  133. FAX programs.  Other programs can interfere with the installation.
  134.  
  135. From the Windows Program Manager, select the File menu.
  136. If you have Windows 95, press the Start button instead.
  137. Then choose RUN.
  138.  
  139. In the RUN box, type the drive and directory containing the uncompressed
  140. ("un-zipped") NameBase files, followed by \SETUP and then press Enter.
  141. For example, if you unzipped the NAME200.ZIP file into a directory
  142. named DOWNLOAD on your C drive, you would type:
  143. C:\DOWNLOAD\SETUP in the RUN box, and then press the Enter key.
  144.  
  145. The Setup program will then take over.  After it starts, it will ask you
  146. where to install the program files.  The drive and directory are already
  147. filled in with C:\NAMEWIN.  This is usually where you want to install the
  148. files, so just press Enter and the installation will continue.  The
  149. installation program will copy the files to their proper places and
  150. create a NameBase for Windows program group and icons in Windows for you.
  151.  
  152. After installation, you should click on the NameBase Help icon and read
  153. each of the topics listed in the Help file.
  154.  
  155. If you want to make "normal" installation diskettes which simply
  156. require the user to run the setup program without unzipping the file
  157. first, you will need two diskettes.  Unzip the NAME200.ZIP file to a
  158. hard disk, then copy all un-zipped files except NAMEBASE.HL_ to the
  159. first diskette.  Copy file NAMEBASE.HL_ to the second diskette.  The
  160. setup program will prompt the user to insert Disk 2 when required.
  161.  
  162. It is possible to install NameBase without using the setup program,
  163. although you would not want to unless you encounter some problem with
  164. the installation.  If you do encounter some problem installing
  165. NameBase, MAKE SURE NO OTHER PROGRAMS ARE RUNNING WHEN YOU INSTALL
  166. NAMEBASE.  You may even want to end Windows, then restart it, then
  167. close any programs that Windows may automatically run upon start-up.
  168. Other programs running is the most common cause of installation problems.

  170. To install NameBase manually (as a last resort), all of the files on the
  171. diskette which have names ending with ".DL_" and ".VB_" and ".38_" need
  172. to be expanded into your \Windows\System directory. You also need to
  173. create a directory named "NAMEWIN" and expand the other files from
  174. the diskette to this directory.  You need to install every file that
  175. ends with an underscore character (_).  To install these files, you need
  176. to use the EXPAND.EXE program which comes with Microsoft Windows.
  177. The syntax for running this program is:
  178.   EXPAND sourcefilename destinationfilename
  179. Replace "sourcefilename" with the drive and file name of the file on the
  180. diskette, such as A:VBRUN300.DL_ and replace "destinationfilename" with
  181. the drive, directory, and file name of the expanded file, which in this
  182. example is C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VBRUN300.DLL
  183. The last 3 characters of all files that end with "DL_" become "DLL".
  184. The last 3 characters of all files that end with "VB_" become "VBX".
  185. The last 3 characters of all files that end with "EX_" become "EXE".
  186. The last 3 characters of the file that ends with "HL_" become "HLP".
  187. The last 3 characters of the file that ends with "38_" become "386".
  188. The last 3 characters of the file that ends with "MD_" become "MDB".
  189. Therefore, to install the VBRUN300 file, you type the following command:
  190.   EXPAND A:VBRUN300.DL_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VBRUN300.DLL
  191. To install the MSCOMM file, you must type the following command:
  192.   EXPAND A:MSCOMM.VB_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSCOMM.VBX
  193. To install the NameBase help file, you must type the following command:
  194.   EXPAND A:\NAMEBASE.HL_ C:\NAMEWIN\NAMEBASE.HLP
  195. This last command assumes you already created a directory called
  196. NAMEWIN, because that is where the expanded file will be copied to by
  197. the EXPAND program.  You do not need to install any files that do not
  198. end with the underscore character.
