  1. A Square Image - Read Me First October 1998
  2.  
  3. A Square Image is a simple, free, image editor based
  4. on TriVista's "A Smaller Image" product (see our 
  5. Website for details). This very simple image editor 
  6. has been tuned for creating square images from source
  7. images of any size. A primary use is for generating 
  8. images to be used as textures in VRML scenes. 
  9.  
  10. In VRML, images that are factors of two work best. 
  11. Output image sizes can range from 16x16 up to 512x512 
  12. in increments of 16. In addition to its usefulness for
  13. VRML, A Square Image can also be used for creating 
  14. very small bitmaps to be used for icons or on buttons.
  15.  
  16. The entire software application is contained on a one
  17. screen interface. The source image is displayed on 
  18. the left side of the screen. The size of the 
  19. crop/matte area can be adjusted in small increments by 
  20. dragging the slider, clicking the +/- buttons, or by 
  21. using the arrow keys. To adjust the window size by 
  22. larger increments, click to the left or right of the 
  23. pointer in the slider bar or use the "Page Up" and 
  24. "Page Down" keys.

  26. The output image is displayed on the right half of the 
  27. interface. The output resolution can be adjusted in 16
  28. pixel increments by dragging the slider or using the 
  29. arrow keys. Clicking in the slider bar to the left or
  30. right of the pointer or using the "Page Up" and 
  31. "Page Down" keys will increase or decrease the 
  32. resolution in increments of 64 pixels.

  34. Rotation arrows and a Smooth/Sharpen slider round out
  35. this simple interface. Each click of a rotation arrow 
  36. will rotate the output image by 90 degrees left or 
  37. right. Dragging the smooth/sharpen slider or using the 
  38. arrow keys will adjust the image sharpness in 10% 
  39. increments. Clicking inside the smooth/sharpen slider 
  40. area  or using the "Page Up" and "Page Down" keys will 
  41. adjust the values in 20% increment.

  43. Note: All sliders can be set to the minium value using
  44. the "Home" key and the maximum value using the "End" key.

  46. To install A Square Image, copy the zip or self-
  47. extracting exe file (called asqi10.zip or asqi10.exe)
  48. into a temporary folder or directory. Unzip and/or run 
  49. asqi10.exe, and follow the on-screen instructions to 
  50. install the program.

  52. The program will self-extract and place all the files in 
  53. a folder called ASquareImage.  To run, double click the
  54. file called ASquareImage.exe in the above folder.
